10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

The Johto region of Pokémon is filled with a variety of Pocket Monsters. Many of the creatures in Generation II were new to the series, and while the region, in general, is divisive among fans, the fact remains that some of these new Pokémon were incredibly strong and many remain meta-relevant today.

The way to measure a Pokémon’s strength is by assessing its stats, abilities, and available moves, all info which can be found on sites like Serebii.net. Since it’s obvious that Legendary and Mythical Pokémon are among the strongest in the region, they won’t be considered when evaluating the power of some of these more accessible Pocket Monsters.

10 Kingdra

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

Kingdra has the honor of being the second fully evolved Dragon-type in the Pokémon series. As a member of this often overpowered type, it does not disappoint. Its stats are all consistent and quite high, giving it options as far as attacking goes. However, all of the attacks it learns from leveling up are Special, meaning it may have to rely on TMs to acquire some usable Physical attacks.

Regardless, Kingdra is a mighty force. This is especially true if it has the ability “Sniper,” which increases the power of critical hits drastically. Under the proper circumstances, Kingdra can cut through opposing teams with relative ease.

9 Typhlosion

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

The beloved Fire-type Typhlosion is a powerful attacker. It has high Speed and Special Attack stats, making it a dangerous force. Its access to some incredible moves further aids its attacking capabilities. Through leveling up, Typhlosion can learn Lava Plume, Flamethrower, and Eruption, which are some of the most powerful Fire moves in the series.

Its other stats are decent, and it can hold its own during unfavorable battles. When faced with neutral matchups, though, Typhlosion can be destructive.

8 Espeon

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

Espeon is a worthy addition to the list of powerful Psychic-types in the series. Although its HP and Defense leave much to be desired, Espeon becomes more than capable through its Special Attack and Speed. It also has access to some incredible Psychic-type attacks, such as Psychic and Psybeam.

Luckily, these are Special moves, which is Espeon’s specialty. As a Psychic-type using these Psychic moves, it gains a Same Type Attack Bonus on top of the already high damage, which makes Espeon a deadly foe.

7 Crobat

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

Crobat is a much-needed upgrade to Generation I’s Golbat, and this new evolution helped the line to become meta-relevant. The Pokémon has an incredible Speed stat and a solid Attack stat. The only major downside to Crobat is that it does not have access to many amazing moves via leveling up. Despite this, Crobat is a reliable pick.

The impact of its Speed cannot be overstated, as it turns this Pokémon from a decent attacker to a sweeping powerhouse. None of its stats are abysmal, either, meaning that this Pokémon can often remain in the battle regardless of the category of attack used against it.

6 Meganium

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

The fully evolved Grass-type starter Meganium shines on its defensive side. Both categories have high stat values, allowing Meganium to take many hits from opponents. Its pure Grass typing somewhat helps it. Even with only one type, Meganium has five vulnerabilities, but it has no extreme vulnerabilities.

With its high defensive stats, it can often withstand even super-effective damage. Its offensive stats are decent, and by being able to defend, it can wear opponents down as the battle continues.

5 Umbreon

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

While Espeon utilizes its stats on the offensive side, Umbreon uses its stats defensively. Both its Defense and Special Defense are quite high, but this is at the sacrifice of most of its other stats. This is where Umbreon excels, though. One of its best moves, Assurance, doubles in power if Umbreon is damaged in the same turn.

Since Umbreon has a fairly low Speed stat, it would be likely it would attack last. With its high defensive capabilities, though, it would likely survive and strike back with an incredibly powerful blow. Umbreon is considered by many to be the best Eeveelution in the series, and it is clear to see why.

4 Steelix

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

A deserved upgrade to an interesting but underwhelming Pokémon, Steelix lives up to its imposing appearance. Its Defense stat is absurdly high, making it one of the most frustrating opponents for any Physical attacker. Steelix can have some trouble when it comes to Special attackers, though.

If these can be minimalized, this Pokémon can be unstoppable. Its Attack stat has the higher value between the two offensive categories, and most of its attacks are Physical. As long as certain matchups are avoided, Steelix is a dependable and dangerous Pokémon.

3 Feraligatr

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

Feraligatr is best as a Physical specialist. Its Attack and Defense are both relatively high, while its other stats are decent and fairly evenly distributed. This is great for Feraligatr because most of the attacks it learns from leveling up are Physical.

As with its fully evolved starter peers, Feraligatr has only one type. This can be both helpful and detrimental to it depending on the situation, but Feraligatr does not need a Same Type Attack Bonus on its Physical attacks to be powerful. With a solid stat spread, this Pokémon is capable of taking down many opponents.

2 Scizor

10 Strongest Pokémon From The Johto Region

Although Scizor does not have an incredibly high base stat total, like many of the other strongest Pokémon in Johto, it does have incredible defensive typing. Blending Bug and Steel makes one of the best dual-type combinations in the series, and Scizor uses it very well. It is only weak to Fire, to which it has an extreme vulnerability, but it resists a multitude of types.

Scizor also has a very high Attack stat and access to several stellar moves that share one of its types. Scizor excels both offensively and defensively, and it remains even now one of the most capable Bug-types in the franchise.

1 Tyranitar

The pseudo-Legendary for the Johto region, Tyranitar has incredible stats that rival those of even Legendaries. Although this Pokémon is fairly slow, it makes up for it with all of its other stats. The dual-typing of Rock/Dark leaves it incredibly vulnerable to Fighting-type moves, but in most other situations, Tyranitar often comes out on top.

It can use many powerful Dark and Rock moves, which either utilize its high Special Attack or very high Attack. Either way, Tyranitar can easily dominate many foes. It is the region’s pseudo-Legendary for a reason.
