As isekai series have become the norm over the years, finding a series that’s a true fantasy and not just a video game masquerading as one has become more and more rare. Which makes it all the more funny that one of the best fantasy anime from the last ten years was something based on a cell phone game.

Still, there are no isekai elements here. Just a likable, heroic captain and his crew going on an adventure, hoping to solve the mysteries that caused them to leave their homes in the first place. Granblue’s larger universe can be easy to get lost in, so here’s a quick primer for people who want to dive into this fantasy action-adventure.

10 WHAT IS GRANBLUE FANTASY?

Granblue Fantasy started out as a roleplaying game on iOS and Android, created by Cygames. Cygames is, of course, the same company responsible for games like Rage of Bahamut, and Shadowverse. The game is a turn-based title where players explore a world gradually, with new chapters being added consistently since it came out in 2014.

Granblue Fantasy: The Animation is an adaptation of this game which initially came out in 2017, but got a second season confirmed and then moved studios from A1 Pictures to MAPPA.

9 DO I NEED TO PLAY THE GAME TO UNDERSTAND THIS?

It’s easy to learn that an adaptation of something based on something else requires you to have experienced the original. But here that’s very much not the case. Much as Cygames managed with Rage of Bahamut, there’s no need to try and play the game to understand this.

Instead, the anime begins at the beginning and shows us everything we need to know. In fact, this anime likely makes the game easier to jump into, as it provides more context for what we’ve seen happening in the world.

8 WHO’S THE MAIN CHARACTER?

Well, this part is sort of up for debate. In the games, everyone plays as The Captain, and the anime follows suit by centering things around Gran, captain of the ship The Grandcypher. Gran is a polite young boy with dreams of leaving the island of Zinkenstill one day.

Of course, the story’s other primary plotline involves Lyria, a young girl who has the unique power to speak to the Primal Beasts, creatures that tend to spiritually inhabit the sky islands humanity lives on. Both Gran and Lyria are inextricably connected thanks to the early events of the show.

7 WHAT’S UP WITH THE DIFFERENT LEAD IN THE OVA?

So, if anyone’s seen any promotional materials for the OVA, they’ll notice that the main character for Granblue Fantasy: The Animation, isn’t actually there. Instead, there’s a blonde girl named Djeeta. In the mobile title, the player is granted the option to choose between two different characters to decide who will be in the lead role.

The male character is Gran, but the female character is Djeeta. As a way of offering a bit of additional fanservice to people who enjoy the mobile titles, Djeeta is the lead character of the “Another Sky” episode that went directly to Blu-ray. A second episode focusing on Djeeta, “One More Journey”, will be out on Blu-ray in March.

6 IS THERE A DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO MAIN CHARACTERS?

It’d be easy to assume that Gran and Djeeta are basically identical characters, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Even though functionally they should be, Djeeta’s actually MUCH more talented than Gran was.

The thirteenth episode, Another Sky, does a brief recap of Djeeta’s adventures as the captain of Grandcypher, and everything we see her do is accomplished far easier than Gran was able to do it. We even see her take care of whole quests on her own, as she happens to be just that good. To use gaming terms, it’s as if someone got to go through the game a second time using a new character but retaining their old levels.

5 IS THERE AN OVERARCHING PLOT?

So, now that we’ve got all the other stuff out of the way, let’s get into the overarching plot. The main storyline is about Gran, who saw his father leave years ago on a journey. He eventually sends Gran a letter, telling him he would be waiting for Gran on the island of Estalucia, the supposed Island of the Stars.

Once Gran saves Lyria’s life (and vice versa), the two of them, Katalina, and Vyrn decide to leave Gran’s home and go on a journey in the hopes of eventually finding Gran’s father and cracking the mystery of the story.

4 DOES THE CAST EXPAND?

It’s easy to wonder based on the story of Gran and his group traveling to different sky islands in a giant flying ship whether or not the cast grows. And the answer is…of course it does.

The anime is based on the video game, which is a gacha game. Gacha titles often involve adding new content or characters based on either in-game currency or completing the storyline. The game has an enormous cast, and the anime tries to fit most of the more important characters into its own story as well.

3 WHO’S THE VILLAIN?

So, we haven’t gotten into what Gran actually saves Lyria from. Lyria’s a young woman who has the unique ability to talk to Primal Beasts, these guardians who watch over all the different sky islands.

Lyria’s ability is wanted by the Erste Empire, who’ve spent some time torturing Lyria for the sake of gaining access to her ability to communicate with and control the Primal Beasts. Gran saves her from this, and as a result, they all wind up on the run from the Empire, with new characters having to deal with that burden as they tag along as well.

2 DO THEY ADAPT THE WHOLE THING?

As always, these lists aren’t complete without answering whether or not people will be able to finish the anime without walking away with an incomplete story. And in the case of Granblue Fantasy…the answer is unfortunately no.

The game has been going on since 2014 and shows no signs of stopping, as it was once one of the biggest games in Japan. And with Granblue having gotten only two short seasons in two years, it doesn’t look like they’ll be catching up any time soon. People looking to get even half of the entire story should finish the series up and move on to the games.

1 WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER GAMES?

For those who are into video games, or have been researching Granblue, they might have heard about the other Granblue titles. Not only is the mobile title still going, but there’s also a fighting game coming soon from ArcSystemWorks. Known as Granblue Fantasy Versus, this game will feature a single-player mode maintaining the fighting battle system but utilizing an RPG-esque storyline.

There’s also Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy Relink, which is meant to be a major J-RPG with co-op modes and major boss battles for players to take on, with an original story. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t even have a loose release date.
