10 Things In The Star Wars Expanded Universe You Never Knew Actually Existed

The Star Wars Expanded Universe, now known as Legends, is a weird and wonderful place. Before Disney took over Star Wars, it was a place for Star Wars fans to get information, knowledge, and stories out with the films that connected to the universe. All the content still exists, they just are no longer canon and so are nothing to do with the films or universe anymore.

Overall, it is probably for the best with the amount of nonsense the universe hold, and the fact there is fantastic stuff in the canon universe with more to come, with the best parts of Legends likely joining it sooner or later. A lot of hardcore fans have their knowledge on the EU but there may be some stuff they do not know, and a whole lot of stuff younger, or more casual fans do not know. Here are 10 (definitely not all) things in the Legends you did not know existed (probably).

10 DARTH VADER VS DARTH MAUL

A fantasy fight which would have many Star Wars fans salivating at the mouth to see is one that occurred in the Expanded Universe. It takes place in the Dark Horse Comics “Resurrection” story, found in Star Wars Tales 9.

The story sees Vader lured to the moon Kalakar Six by people called the Sith Prophets. They deem Vader unfit to serve by the Emperor’s side as he does not have the blood of Darth Bane. The prophets have had Maul resurrected and when Vader attempts to strike them down, a duel with the Dathamorian ensues.

9 DARTH VADER VS BOBA FETT (TWICE)

Darth Vader vs Boba Fett is another, very different kind of fantasy fight. Despite his awful death in Return Of The Jedi, Boba Fett is one of the Galaxy’s most popular characters. A fight with Vader is one a lot of fans want to see, and that all fans can… twice.

The first of these comes in the 4th issue of the Boba Fett: Enemy of the Empire comic which sees Vader hunt Fett for a strange box he has in his possession and an epic battle ensues. The second comes in the story “Prey” which is in the Star Wars Tales 11 comic, this time Tarkin tasked Boba to find Han Solo but Vader disagrees with this decision and Tarkin sends Vader too and, in a cantina, the 2 battle for Solo, with Boba even wielding a lightsaber.

8 BOBA FETT SURVIVED THE SARLACC BUT ALSO FELL BACK IN… AND ESCAPED AGAIN

10 Things In The Star Wars Expanded Universe You Never Knew Actually Existed

Boba Fett’s death in Return Of The Jedi is one of the Star Wars film’s most hated events, and his escape from the Sarlacc was long debated amongst fans. In 1995 in the Tales From Jabba’s Palace (an anthology of short stories), one such story named “A Barve Like That: The Tale Of Boba Fett” details how through savvy methods and telepathic connections, Fett escaped.

A lot of people know that he escaped, but this was not the first time he did so. The first time was in Star Wars 81: Jawas Of Doom. Boba is spewed from the Sarlacc, is taken by Jawas in a Sandcrawler, loses his memory, saves R2-D2 and Han Solo remembers he hates them and after some fighting the Sandcrawler – with Fett in it – falls into the Sarlacc. In a separate incident in The Mandalorian Armor book, we learn Boba blasted out of the Sarlacc and was nursed to health by Dengar. All these incidents are disconnected and a bit cluttered so good thing the EU does not exist.

7 BELDORION

The Hutts are not exactly known in the Star Wars universe as keepers of the peace, justice, and light. But in the Planet Of Twilight novel fans are introduced to Beldorion, a Hutt Jedi Knight.

Beldorion ended up turning to the dark side after being sent to Nam Chorios and establishing himself as ruler of the planet. The Hutt ended up being killed in a lightsaber duel with none other than Leia Organa herself.

6 CENTAURS & WYRWULVES

Centaurs and werewolves are creatures of mythology here in the real world and the thought of taking them and putting them into a series like Star Wars seems silly. But in the novel The Crystal Star that is exactly what happens.

In a strange, and honestly quite terrible novel, our usual heroes are on their adventure, Leia, Chewie, and the droids off finding Leia’s kidnapped children, and Han and Luke off fighting strange beings. Along the way, fans are introduced to centaurs (or centauriform) – which are beings with human heads, and equine bottoms – and wyrwulves – six-legged canine animals of the Cordu-Ji race.

5 “SKIPPY”

10 Things In The Star Wars Expanded Universe You Never Knew Actually Existed

The more hardcore Star Wars fans will know of this story, but it deserves a place on this list. R5-D4 (the red astromech with the bad motivator) is a Force-sensitive droid who goes by the name Skippy.

Skippy The Jedi Droid is a story published in Star Wars Tales 1 and follows the Force-sensitive astromech’s journey to Jabba’s barge to the Jaws to being purchased by Owen and Luke. The droid, when purchased, has a vision that should Luke be with him and not R2 that the stormtroopers would get the Death Star plans, Leia would die, the Rebellion would be destroyed, and various other horrors would occur.

4 SUN CRUSHER

10 Things In The Star Wars Expanded Universe You Never Knew Actually Existed

Star Wars does have an infatuation with planet killers and superweapons with the Legends universe being no exception to this. The novel Jedi Search introduces possibly the most powerful of all the Sun Crusher.

The superweapon was no bigger than a starfighter but killed whole star systems by turning the stars into supernovas. It was resistant to all manner of power, including Death Star super lasers. It was finally destroyed by Kyp Durron who flew it into a black hole.

3 VERY STRANGE LIGHTSABER DESIGNS

One of the biggest and best features of the Star Wars universe is the lightsaber. A fantastic weapon that is as iconic as it is synonymous with Jedi and Sith. While there are classic sabers like Anakin’s blue, Luke’s green, and Maul’s double blade, the EU introduces some strange designs.

One is the lightwhip, literally a lightsaber whip seen in Star Wars #95. Tonfa sabers as seen in The Force Unleashed video game. The lightsaber pike appearing in The Force Unleashed novel, meant to appear in The Clone Wars alongside Bane. Also, the protosaber, the original lightsaber attached to a power pack with a cord, seen in Tales Of The Jedi: Golden Age Of The Sith. Finally implanted sabers, Legends character Irek Ismaren had 8 lightsabers surgically implanted into his body.

2 LOTS OF GREAT STUFF

10 Things In The Star Wars Expanded Universe You Never Knew Actually Existed

Some fanatic haters of the Disney era of Star Wars who are also fanatic lovers of the EU will tell you that the EU is the best and does no wrong. While this is not true, the Legends universe has some phenomenal stuff.

The Darth Plagueis novel by James Luceno, Drew Karpyshan’s Bane trilogy, the original Thrawn trilogy, the X-Wing series and a whole lot more. Various comic books from Marvel and Dark Horse are also amazing. While the Legends TV shows are pretty lackluster, the video games are phenomenal with the Jedi Knight series springing to mind alongside one of the greatest things in all of Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic.

1 A LOT OF NONSENSE

In saying all that though, the Legends universe has a whole lot of bad stuff. The stuff in the EU that is bad is usually so bad it is utter nonsense that should be forgotten about and prove that the current canon is the way forward.

Things falling under this category include Luke’s clone (cloned from his hand 5 years after Empire Strikes Back), as well as the many clones of the Emperor which were nonsense. On top of this, there are the zombie stormtroopers which are not massively offensive just so meh. Then there is Luke falling in love with the AI of a spaceship, Mount Sorrow from the Ewoks TV Show – which is a clinically depressed mountain whose tears can cure anything – and a whole host of other whacky stuff.
