Ironheart took Iron Man’s place at one time in the Marvel Comics and will soon debut in the MCU. Here is what you need to know about RiRi Williams.

It was announced last year that Ironheart is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will have her own Disney+ series. RiRi Williams, the teenager behind the armor, will reportedly also be part of the highly anticipated Armor Wars series on Disney+ where James Rhodes returns as War Machine in what looks to be a loose adaptation of the classic Iron Man story.

While Ironheart will be the latest young hero to join the MCU, along with a new Hawkeye and others, there are a lot of places that the movies and Disney+ shows can go with the character. From her role as one of Marvel’s smartest characters to how she became a hero, Ironheart is one of Marvel’s best young heroes.

RiRi Williams Was The Victim Of Gun Violence

Most superheroes have tragedies in their origin stories. This is also true in the case of RiRi Williams, and it happened long before she became Ironheart. RiRi was a victim of gun violence as a child when a driveby took the life of her best friend Natalie and her step-father.

This is one reason that RiRi is so emotionally scarred and doesn’t like to open up to other people. It is also why she is so adamant about helping people. One of the important moments in Ironheart’s early stories was her choice to join a group therapy session with her mom to work through her past trauma.

Ironheart Is A Super Genius

RiRi Williams is one of the smartest people in the Marvel Universe. She matches up well with other geniuses like Amadeus Cho, but she also has insecurities and often lashes out at others around her. She actually gained the attention of Tony Stark because of her brains.

RiRi went to MIT on a scholarship and ended up building a suit of iron Man armor on her own. What made this most impressive is that she did it with spare parts and her school’s labs, showing she could improvise as well as Tony did when he first built his armor.

RiRi Williams Based Her Original Armor On An Old Iron Man Design

The first Ironheart armor that RiRi Williams built was based on Iron Man Armor Model 41, one of his older models. What is most impressive is that RiRi built it with spare parts she found on campus. She also reverse-engineered the design to put it together.

RiRi also did all this in private and by herself. The Iron Man Armor Model 41 was old, but it was highly technical and this was not an easy task to achieve. When her plans were discovered, she took the armor and went on the run, starting her hero story.

RiRi Williams Became Ironheart After Iron Man’s Death

RiRi Williams had the armor and she was ready to become a hero, but she chose not to at first. She did have Tony’s attention early on and he helped her, even giving her some AI for her second suit design, which was actually based on himself.

However, it wasn’t until Tony Stark died in Civil War II that RiRi finally stepped up and took his place as Ironheart. Stark returned, although with a new body, and he gave RiRi the blessing to continue her role as a hero with the armor based on his own.

RiRi Williams Quit MIT To Become Ironheart

When RiRi Williams first appeared in comics, she went to MIT with other super-geniuses. However, things were not good for her when she was there. Her dean never respected her and would often bring people into her lab without her permission and they rarely respected her work.

RiRi finally had enough of the disrespect, took her Ironheart armor, and dropped out of MIT. She went on to focus her new life on her new role as a superhero rather than try to balance it with her school work.

Ironheart Sold A Patent To Gain A Scientific Laboratory

When RiRi Williams built her original Ironheart armor, she did it with scraps from school and no real money or equipment outside of what she had in her MIT labs. When she quit MIT, she had nothing but she didn’t let that stop her.

Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four is wealthy because he is a genius and sells his patents. That is what RiRi did after quitting school. She invented a GPS tracker that could fit on a show and sold the patent to afford to buy her own lab and equipment to continue tinkering with her inventions.

Ironheart Was A Founding Member Of The Champions

The Champions formed when Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales, and Nova quit the Avengers. They wanted to form a team that cared more about helping people than just about fighting bad guys. They sought out like-minded heroes and Ironheart joined the team from the start.

Ironheart also provided the team with a touch of reality. While Ms. Marvel was the team’s heart, Ironheart was there to help ensure they focused on the real issues so they didn’t forget why they formed in the first place.

Ironheart Fought Thanos Once

Ironheart fought Thanos in the comics. She wasn’t alone as she took her Champions teammates into battle with her, and it didn’t turn out well, but she survived the encounter. In Infinity Countdown: Champions #2, she attacked the Mad Titan head-on.

He then disintegrated her armor but the good news is that he chose to destroy her armor but he allowed her to live. This hurt her almost as bad because she realized she almost led her friends to their deaths.

Ironheart Is An Ally Of Wakanda

Not only is Ironheart coming to the MCU with a Disney+ series, but she is said to return in the Armor Wars series as well. What is next might be a Young Avengers or Champions group, but there is also a chance she might show up in an upcoming Black Panther series. This is because Ironheart, in the comics, is an ally of Wakanda.

Ironheart went to Wakanda in her battle against The Ten Rings and she headed to Wakanda as part of this battle. Ironheart became close friends with Shuri and ended up an honorary citizen. Ironheart also returned to help defend Wakanda in The Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda storyline.

Ironheart Had Her Own JARVIS

Ironheart had an AI in her second suit of armor that was based on Tony Stark and even looked like him. However, when she created her third armor, the pink suit she remains known for today, she added a new AI. This was one she named N.A.T.A.L.I.E.

This is an important name, as that was her friend’s name who died at the driveby shootings. This AI is similar to Iron Man’s JARVIS from the MCU, but N.A.T.A.L.I.E. has an even stronger more dominating personality – which makes sense because it is based on RiRi’s memories of her friend, allowing them to fight crime together.
