The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) enthralled viewers for eight seasons. Hybrids, vampires, doppelgangers, witches, Originals, Travelers, Heretics, and werewolves all flock to the small town of Mystic Falls whose inhabitants have a long history of trying to co-exist with things that go bump in the night.

By the season 8 finale, characters have come and gone, and those who remain have been transformed by the magical world they inhabit. Over the years, The Vampire Diaries creates dense folklore that keeps even the most diehard fan’s head spinning, especially when it comes to events that transpire early in the series history. 10 Caroline Is A Mean Girl

During season 1, Caroline is a stereotypical mean girl. She treats her besties more like frenemies. She’s jealous, particularly of Elena, catty and eager to put others down. The person she Regina George’s worst of all is her mother, throwing it in Sheriff Forbe’s face that her father has found love … with another man.

This daddy’s girl slowly transitions into a less grating more likable person after she’s dead. The former Miss Mystic Falls can overcome her insecurities to become a devoted friend, doting daughter, and a loving mom.

9 Uncle Zach Disappears

Zach, Stefan, and Damon’s distant nephew isn’t thrilled when the brothers return to Mystic Falls. After Damon breaks Zach’s neck on season 1’s “You’re Undead to Me,” Carol Lockwood accepts Damon’s explanation that Zach’s sudden absence is due to a trip. The Salvatore descendent only reappears in flashbacks during season 6.

As a Town Council member and the leading supplier of vervain to Mystic Fall’s most prominent citizens, his disappearance doesn’t create the slightest bit of suspicion thanks in large part to Damon’s eagerness to take Zach’s place as the ultimate insider: an imposter pretending to hate vampires.

8 Vervain Is In Short Supply

Zach reveals his stash of vervain to Stefan during season 1. He cultivates a small garden of the plants in the Salvatore Boarding House’s cavernous basement. Zach supplies plants that prevent compulsion to the who’s who of Mystic Falls.

The amount seems disproportionate to the increasing demand as the series continues. At one point, there’s so much of this herb available, it finds it’s way into the town water supply, but where it comes from remains a mystery.

7 Stefan Craves Elena’s Blood

There’s a very Twilight vibe going on early in Elena and Stefan’s relationship. Stefan struggles to hide his true visage when he sees she’s bleeding. Stefan’s “Ripper” tendencies by a diet of furry woodland creatures which isn’t as satisfying as human blood.

It’s a stark reminder that no matter how devoted Stefan is to suppressing that killer instinct, it’s very much inside him. Even the intensity of carnal hunger causes Stefan’s true face to emerge.

6 Damon Has Special Skills

Damon loves to make an entrance. At the start of the season, he’s able to conjure fog which comes in handy when he’s trying to disorient his victims, camouflage himself or just create a Dracula-esque vibe.

There’s also a link between Damon and crows. He uses them as flying minions, even dispatching one to fetch Caroline as he’s held captive in the Salvatore Boarding House dungeon. The series abandons Damon’s additional mystical mojo, leaving him with no special skills to put on his spooky resume.

5 Anna Is The First To Use The Word Doppelganger

The mystery of why Elena is the spitting image of Katherine is one of many mysteries that comprise season 1. It’s Rose who provides clarity about what a doppelganger is during season 2. Of course, fans become elbow deep in doppelgangers by season 5 thanks to Katherine, Silas, Amara, Elena, Stefan, and the Travelers.

But before the word becomes lexicon synonymous with the show, Anna hints at what’s to come on season 1’s “Fool Me Once” when she comes face-to-face with Elena. “You really are Katherine’s doppelganger.”

4 Matt’s Mom Hooks Up With Tyler And Damon

Kelly Donovan shows up on episode 15, and the first item on her agenda is to hook up with Damon. They get caught by Matt, Caroline, Elena, and Stefan, so things never move past the heavy petting stage. Probably good news for Kelly because Damon’s volatility is at an all-time high.

To cope with her grief after finding out about Vicki’s death, Kelly seeks solace in the arms of Tyler Lockwood during a party at the mayor’s house. Nobody’s hating on a MILF, but the timing and the younger man of choice lead to an ugly scene and the last of Kelly Donovan until season 8 when her actions prove she’ll never be in contention for “Mother of the Year.”

3 Bonnie Thinks She’s Psychic

During the “Pilot,” Bonnie is convinced that she’s psychic, but when she predicts a new school year means the dark times are behind herself and Elena, she couldn’t be more off. On “Night of the Comet” Bonnie reveals to Caroline she comes from a long line of witches, according to her grandmother.

Bonnie also insinuates Grams is a problem (a one-time accusation) drinker but that she’s crazy as well. It takes Bonnie several seasons to hone her craft — witchcraft that is — but by season 8, her powers are so great, she saves her hometown from being consumed by Hellfire.

2 Alaric Learns His Wife Is A Vampire

Alaric arrives in Mystic Falls looking for answers regarding the disappearance of his wife Isobel. Specifically, he comes to exact revenge against Damon. He believes Isobel is dead (or at least he wants to) because the truth is so much worse.

Damon confirms that not only did he feed on Isobel and sleep with her, but he also turned her into a vampire. Not because she asked, but because she begged. Once the cuckold and a fool, Alaric ends up Damon’s best friend. Forgiveness comes easy when two guys can bond over being screwed over by the women they loved.

1 The Gilbert Ring’s Power Is Revealed

The Gilbert Rings are both a blessing and a curse. It saves the lives of John, Alaric, Jeremy, and Matt on numerous occasions. The downside is it can turn the wearer into a murderous psychopath.

The rings make their first appearance during season 1, and it’s Alaric who puts the pieces together that the gift from his wife has the power to reincarnate the dead.
