10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

When asked by Vanity Fair why Rose didn’t make room for Jack on the door, James Cameron replied that Jack has to die. It’ s amazing how more than two decades later, this question still gets asked. It only goes to show how dear Jack is to his fandom. The three-hour 15-minute movie went on to win 11 awards at the 70th Academy Awards, including best picture.

Often times we need to sacrifice logic and reason just to enjoy a movie – that’s how the industry works, after all – you just ignore unrealistic happenings and go on. Nevertheless, it is human nature for inconsistencies to irritate us and we sometimes wonder how those on set actually missed these inconsistencies. These things happen even in the best of movies. We have compiled 10 things that make no sense about Titanic.

10 She Vanished

It appears Rose Dawson was able to stay off the grid throughout her life and that is really heart-breaking. It is weird that no one from her past managed to track her down successfully, considering how wealthy her family and friends were. Even more intriguing was the fact that she worked as an actress after her lover met his grim death.

You just wonder how dumb they expect us to be to buy into that. Sure, she changes her name to Rose Dawson, a name that obviously didn’t show up in the ship’s manifest, but it is still a wonder that no one from her past tried to connect with her.

9 She Dropped The Necklace

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

In the unforgettable “paint me like one of your French girls” scene, Rose can be seen wearing the Heart of the Ocean necklace. We see later that she has had the jewel the entire time and she only came aboard the Keldysh (Bill’s ship) so she could drop it into the sea over the wreck site to lay it to rest down with Jack.

She basically set millions of dollars on fire and we think that was really stupid. She could have sold the jewel and given the proceeds to some worthy cause. It’s even worse in the alternate ending that was released in 2005, where Bill actually touches it and still lets her throw it off. We really hope a sequel comes out, set in a courtroom with Bill Paxton on trial for being the cause of his employer’s bankruptcy.

8 Jack Would Have Died Earlier And Rose Wouldn’t Have Survived

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

In the book about the disaster titled, Unsinkable, by Daniel Allen Butler, it is stated that most people who entered the cold water — about -2oC — died in less than 30 minutes.

This would mean that all the shenanigans performed in the water by Jack and Rose shouldn’t have been possible and Rose couldn’t have survived to tell her story, as hypothermia would have kicked in long before. Sure, this would have defeated the purpose of the movie, but at least it would have been more reasonable and more accurate.

7 Historical Inaccuracies

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

Yeah, we know it’s shocking. Whilst the movie did remarkably well to give viewers the real 1914 experience, this movie was rife with historical inaccuracies. Third class passengers were not actually locked below deck, but the classes were strictly segregated, so third-class passengers weren’t allowed into the first class at all and vice versa. Margaret Brown was never called Molly or the Unsinkable during her lifetime and this was a Hollywood invention. Mike Murdock was actually a hero when the ship sank. And, perhaps the most ridiculous inaccuracy is that Lake Wissota wasn’t created until six years after the wreckage.

One or two of these could have been looked over, but nah, a man can only take so many “inaccurate vitamins” at a time. Ironically, we get the year of the wreck wrong too — it was 1912.

6 People Don’t Fall In Love That Quickly

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

Even if Jack and Rose had survived the wreck, there is little reason to believe they would have had a lasting life together. There is the fact that two days isn’t sufficient time for a relationship to develop and it seemed like they were just infatuated with each other. I mean, they got in the sack at the end of the second day. They couldn’t even float together on the door.

No one in their right minds falls in love that quickly and gives up everyone and everything she’s known and worked for for a guy they barely know. It simply doesn’t make sense.

5 How Was Jack Able To Do Hold Her For 37 Seconds?

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

Yes, we timed it. But, to be honest, could Jack really have held onto Rose for a full 37 seconds, considering the number of factors working against the two of them?

It wasn’t as if he was holding a static object, like a bucket of water or a barbell, she was swinging and that meant her weight was unevenly distributed. Being a high-society, turn-of-the-20th-century lady, her hand was not exactly built to bolster grip strength as she likely wasn’t doing a lot of taxing labor with them. But, it still seems ridiculous seeing her show such display of strength for a person of her age and class.

4 Rose Displaying So Many Paintings For A Week-Long Trip

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

It was obvious from the beginning of the movie that Rose was a high maintenance lady. You could tell that just by observing her clothing, speech and poise and Kate Winslet, being the marvelous beauty that she is, did so well playing the role. But just how many paintings she acquired in Europe and why she felt the need to display all of them in her room on the ship is beyond us.

It just feels so impractical and childish, considering the trip was for only a short period — a week — and ships are known for swaying from time to time. One turbulent night and the paintings would have toppled to the ground.

3 Glass Scene

10 Things That Make No Sense About The Titanic Movie

This is probably the most glaring terror and it’s the one that gets the most attention. The mistake occurs when Rose, trying to save Jack’s butt, breaks the glass to get the fireman’s ax and you find the box almost free of glass. When she grabs the ax, however, you find shards of glass already back.

Editors are expected to do a great job on the caliber of movies Titanic is in. However, let’s assume whosoever worked on this scene wasn’t concentrating during their work. Titanic fans noticed this discontinuity and still talk about it.

2 Wardrobe Malfunction?

When Jack is falsely accused of stealing Rose’s expensive diamond necklace, he gets taken below deck and handcuffed to a steel pipe, with the mean Mr. Lovett taking the key away.

When Rose realizes the truth, she goes in search of Jack to rescue him. As Rose tries to free him, his tan suspenders appear, then, they disappear again the next minute, when the shots change only to appear a few moments later. We do not think it was because he was uncomfortable and decided to take them off.

1 Rose Almost Severed Jack’s Hand

Yes, there is more than one problem with this scene. How did heck she not chop off Jack’s hands when she struck with the ax? First of all, she closes her eyes. We are not buying it. In reality, it would take a novice at least three months or more to be good enough to hit so precise a mark. In retrospect, cutting off Jack’s hand would have been an effective way of freeing him, albeit a more painful way.

We may never know if Miss DeWitt Bukater had a secret ax-throwing life that made her so good and she just didn’t want to let on to anyone that she wasn’t such a prim and proper lady.
