10 Things You Didnt Know About Kaiman From Dorohedoro

While Dorohedoro took way too much time to actually get the anime adaptation that it deserves, fans are glad to have gotten it eventually. With the new series available on Netflix though, both the anime and the manga are likely to have tons of fans here soon, even if it’s only something that’s been “on your list” for a bit longer than it should have been.

For those who haven’t gotten to it just yet, Dorohedoro takes place in a world maybe kind of similar-ish to the one like modern-day earth, except people live in one half of the world, and magic-users live in another area known as “The Hole”. The protagonist, Kaiman, hates magic users and makes it his job to kill as many as he can get his hands on in hopes that he’ll figure out who stole his head. Confused? Not surprising.

10 His Personality Makes Sense When You Dig Into Who He Is

10 Things You Didnt Know About Kaiman From Dorohedoro

Kaiman is a weird character in the first place, even looking past the fact that he has the head of a caiman (hence the name). He also has a voice inside his mouth who he desperately wants to know the identity of. This is the reason he usually bites the head of any of the magic-users that were unlucky enough to think that crossing him was a good idea.

As the series progresses, around the halfway point, it’s revealed that Caiman used to be a regular human, Caiman dies, and we see that his head has grown a body of its own. This really explains his pretty sporadic morality, since he’s basically one person split into pieces.

9 His Design Has Changed Drastically Over Time

When the manga started, making this something that’s hard to notice if one isn’t familiar with the manga, Kaiman had a pretty slim build. He wasn’t always the massive beefcake that the anime presents him to be.

It’s much easier to focus on the crosses over his eyes, the gas mask he wears, and the giant lizard head, but that doesn’t negate the fact that Kaiman got markedly burlier as the series progressed for really no reason that has an effect on the plot or anything like that, maybe it was just easier to draw.

8 He Has A Very Distinct List Of Priorities

It’s no secret that Kaiman is absolutely crazy for gyoza (traditionally Chinese dumplings served throughout a lot of Asia), but he’s actually listed it as being his second-biggest priority in life.

His first is figuring out how the heck he ended up with the lizard head, which is where most of the show draws all of its conflict from, then eating as much gyoza as possible as frequently as possible, and then just putting himself in a better financial state, which is a totally reasonable list of priorities for any given person to have.

7 He’s Definitely In The Anti-Hero Camp

While it might be pretty easy for one to identify with Kaiman since he’s the protagonist of the show and all that, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s a character undeserving of any sort of moral reprehension. In fact, Kaiman makes quite a few pretty “evil” or at least questionable decisions, like going the violent route when something doesn’t go his way rather than trying to reason things out.

Not only that, but he was also shown killing a 13-year-old without remorse.

6 More Than Meets The Eye Is Going On When He Bites Mages

Kaiman isn’t just biting these mages on the head as an intimidation thing among the magic-user community as an absolute psychopath, although it’s certainly done that for him too since he’s completely immune to magic. When Kaiman is biting the head of a mage, his goal there is to figure out why the heck there’s what’s described as a “little man” in there.

After biting the magic-user and before killing them regardless of whether or not they’re any help, he always the same question: “What did the man guy inside my head say?”. Oh, surprise. The voice is a ghost by the way.

5 His Magic Immunity Has Some Weird Rules

While it might seem that Kaiman’s immunity to magic would make him pretty much invincible while traveling around on his adventures in the hole, that isn’t quite the case.

We soon find out that there are a few exceptions to the limits of this immunity, one of which is the fact that it doesn’t quite reach to protecting him from magic items. Those can very much still kill him. Not only that, but gunshots, blunt weapons, or blades (and especially enchanted ones) would end his whole quest.

4 He Probably Could Have Gotten His Head Back Much More Easily

10 Things You Didnt Know About Kaiman From Dorohedoro

In chapter 8 of the manga, Kaiman gets decapitated. It would be pretty easy to assume that decapitation would kill him, and one should be correct in that assumption if only he hadn’t luckily ended up with his lizard traits. Instead of dying on the stop, his head grows back pretty quickly.

They send it to a lab so that they can have some research done, hoping that they’ll be able to find out literally anything about why his head did that, only for it to be stolen. Couldn’t they just have cut the next head off though, and tested that one too?

3 He’s Spared More Magic-Users Than One Might Think

Over the course of the series, it seems that Kaiman decides to go ahead and put the knives away just a little more frequently, and his bloodthirsty nature seems to have subsided, even if that’s only by a little bit.

We even see him spare a few magic users, if they’re helpful or if they promise to renounce their practice of magic entirely. At the end of the show, in fact, we see Kaiman pretty much give up his grudge against magic users after all he’s been through. He even kills a creature he refers to as Hole-kun despite the fact that it has a reason to be angry, for the greater good.

2 He Has Some Pretty Irrational Fears

Despite the fact that Kaiman frequently goes up against extremely powerful magic-users, lives in a derelict and dangerous area, and comes across zombies pretty often, he’s for some reason more afraid of ghosts. There is a bit of explanation given for this, even though it’s an ironic fear despite the fact that he has a ghost occupying the inside of his mouth.

Ghosts are scary to him, zombies are fine because zombies are hungry, and maybe that’s just a feeling that Kaiman really relates to more than anything he can imagine a ghost would feel?

1 We Don’t Know What The Whole Pie Thing Is About Either

Okay, so there are a few weird pie jokes in the show that might just come off a little bit “lolsorandom”. That being said, they’re pretty good, and the show is kind of known for the occasional absurd humor, so it definitely makes sense.

First, there’s the Pieman disguise that Kaiman uses, which is pretty much just him with a hat on that looks kinda like pie with a gasmask filter showing through. There’s also Fukuyanam who’s magical ability is that he can turn anything into a pie.
