10 Things You Didnt Know About The Watchmen If Youve Only Seen The Zack Snyder Movie

HBO’s Watchmen was one of the most talked-about shows of last year as well as one of the most acclaimed. The miniseries reignited interest in Alan Moore’s original graphic novel, which it is a continuation of, as well as Zack Snyder’s 2009 adaptation of Moore’s book.

While a movie version of Watchmen had been in development for years, Snyder finally brought it to the big screen with mixed results. While the film was a fairly faithful adaptation, some felt it lacked the satirical edge of the book and some of the bigger changes were criticized by fans. So if you only know of Watchmen from the Snyder film, here are some things that were missing.

10 The Island Plot

Snyder’s film absolutely had to narrow the focus of the story as Moore’s book branched out into various subplots and characters. Snyder decided to focus on the main heroes and cut out a lot of the other plots, including the intriguing island storyline.

Various times, the story cuts to some strange plot on a secluded island where artists and scientists are gathered to work on something they believe to be for a movie. Their unusual creation is only hinted at. But whoever hired them clearly wants to cover their tracks as a bomb is planted on their boat as they depart the island when the work is done.

9 Super Strength

After the success of his debut film 300, Snyder used a similar approach to his action sequences in this film. The slow-motion mixed with sped-up action was certainly a distinct feel, but not everyone was a fan of the style. However, fans were more upset by how Snyder seemed to want to turn the story into an action movie.

There is actually very little action in the original story and Snyder seemed to increase the heroes’ strength level. They are almost superhuman with how they take out bad guys and send them flying with their punches. But with the exception of Doctor Manhattan, none of the heroes have any powers to speak of.

8 Costumes

For the most part, Snyder sticks very closely to the costume designs of the comics with a few small exceptions. Doctor Manhattan is seen only ever wearing underwear, but in the comics, the government designs him a full costume which he gradually removes.

Also, the Comedian is shown to only have a small eye mask when he is crime-fighting, but in the comics, he has a full leather face mask similar to that of the Gimp from Pulp Fiction. It’s likely Snyder though the look might be too silly for live-action.

7 Hollis Mason’s Death

While Dan Dreiberg is the main Night Owl we follow in the movie, the first hero to hold that title was Hollis Mason. Hollis appears in the film briefly as an old man whom Dan visits to reminisce about the old days.

The film cuts out a lot of Hollis’ story from the book, including his death. After Night Owl and Silk Specter break Rorschach out of prison, a gang of criminals visit Hollis’ house and beat him to death for being a crime-fighter in the past.

6 Minute Men

Many fans who watch the movie are likely under the impression that the group of heroes are known as the Watchmen. However, that is just the title of the story and they are never referred to by that name in the book. Instead, they are known as the Minutemen.

The book goes into much greater detail about the original Minutemen from the 1930s than what is seen in the movie. The team’s leader, Captain Metropolis, is completely cut from the film as is the mysterious disappearance of Hooded Justice, which the series explores.

5 Afghanistan

While some previous attempts to adapt the book were rumored to move the action into present day, Snyder wisely kept the Cold War setting. However, large elements of that aspect of the story are missing from the film, which builds to the conclusion.

In the book, tensions run high between the United States and Russia, but Russia holds back since America has Doctor Manhattan on their side. However, when Doctor Manhattan leaves Earth, Russia invades Afghanistan, bring the world closer to the brink of war.

4 Supporting Characters

A significant portion of the book is set at a newsstand where various characters come and go, learning about the escalating and unsettling world events. When pairing down the lengthy graphic novel, it makes sense that these characters would be the first to go, but it is a shame as they added so much to the atmosphere of the story.

The characters include the newsstand operator, a young man reading a comic book, a taxi driver, and Rorschach’s psychiatrist at the prison. Their stories end up colliding at a fateful moment which makes the big twist more emotionally impactful.

3 Laurie’s Last Name

One of the key heroes in the movie is Laurie Jupiter, who used to be a hero known as Silk Spectre. Even longer ago, Laurie’s mother, Sally Jupiter, was the first Silk Spectre and served with the original Minutemen.

In the comics, Laurie goes by Laurie Juspeczyk, which is her mother’s actual name. Sally changed it to hide her Polish ancestry when she became a superhero. It’s a small detail but an interesting commentary on the show business side of crime-fighting in this world and how Laurie wants no part of it.

2 Tales Of The Black Freighter

Another noteworthy element from the comics that was cut is the Tales of the Black Freighter, a comic book within the comic book. The young man at the newsstand is seen reading it throughout the story.

The comic is a pirate adventure that tells the tale of a man stranded on an island following a pirate attack and his desperate attempts to make it home to his family. It makes sense to cut this story as it would be difficult to integrate it into the main narrative, but it is a compelling story that mirrors aspects of the main plot.

1 The Squid

The twist ending of the movie reveals that fellow hero Adrian Veidt, aka Ozymandias, has staged an attack in New York City to make it look like Doctor Manhattan has declared war on humanity. His intention was to bring the world together and prevent nuclear war. And his plan works.

While Adrian’s purpose is exactly the same in the comics, the plan itself is much different. He instead uses a giant squid monster to make the world think they are under attack from another world. It’s a shame Snyder didn’t feel bold enough to pull this off.
