10 Times Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars Were Way Too Similar

Riverdale began as Pretty Little Liars was coming to an end. With the two in such proximity and the ages of the characters about the same, fans quickly compared the two mysteries. Starting with a missing person later labeled a death, those left in the small town deal with the consequences.

However, while Riverdale uses the set up to determine who killed Jason Blossom, Pretty Little Liars used it to kickstart “A’s” presence in Spencer, Hanna, Emily, and Aria’s lives. Both shows captured their audiences quickly and successfully as audiences came up with theories and anxiously awaited the answers to the show’s mysteries. Although they have their differences, there were times when the two teen dramas were much too similar.

10 STALKERS

If there was any character that mastered stalking, it was the infamous “A.” Video surveillance was just a part of the effort each “A” had in the overarching game of torturing the Liars. Ranging from cryptic text messages and dangerous animals to dollhouses, each “A” made their mark in different ways.

However, “A” was not the only stalker in the series. Ezra admitted to stalking the girls as well when he wanted to write a book about Alison’s disappearance. Riverdale took a swing at the stalker plot too.

Also, rather than using stealth and mystery, it was a man being referred to as the Black Hood. The Black Hood had been watching people closely to determine who he believed to be sinners. Riverdale’s second season felt eerily similar to Pretty Little Liars in the mystery to reveal the identity of “A.”

9 LARGER THAN LIFE PLOTLINES

Both shows exist in a world beyond reality’s comprehension. In an environment where underground torture chambers are normal, and a board game that can lead you to death is an average occurrence.

While there have been moments of real-world scenarios such as school dances, most things that happen in Rosewood and Riverdale would not be considered ordinary. “A” created an underground dollhouse with rooms meant to appear identical to the Liars’ bedrooms. “A” also knew every little detail about all of their lives. Riverdale treats Archie’s status as a teenage vigilante just as seriously as Veronica’s speakeasy and serial killer genes.

8 COMPLICATED FAMILY TREE

Apparently, in mysteries like these, family they start with is only the beginning of who they are related to. Spencer Hastings thought she had her family figured out until she learned that her father had an affair. Peter was Spencer and Melissa’s father, but he is also the biological father of Jason DiLaurentis, making Spencer and Jason half-siblings and Spencer and Alison cousins.

However, some of that only makes sense after Spencer learned that Veronica was not her biological mother. Instead, Spencer was the result of an affair between Peter Hastings and Mary Drake. Meanwhile, Betty and Cheryl are surprised to learn that the Blossoms and Coopers are relatives as well.

7 SECRET SIBLINGS

Diving deeper into family disputes, there are many secret sibling moments throughout Pretty Little Liars. In addition to Spencer and Jason being half-siblings, Spencer learns that Charlotte DiLaurentis was another half-sibling.

Yet, there’s more. The series finale confirmed the twin theory fans had been speculating on for quite some time. “Til DeAth Do Us PArt” revealed that Spencer had another sibling, this time, her twin sister Alex Drake. Jessica DiLaurentis having a secret twin sister, Mary, was also a shock. Riverdale dipped a toe into that pool as well with Jughead and Betty sharing their brother, Charles. Archie’s Uncle Frank first appears in “Chapter Sixty-Six: Tangerine,” and from Archie’s first reaction, he had never known Frank. Cheryl shares a similar moment when her father’s secret twin brother Claudius Blossom shows up.

6 BODY COUNT

For such small towns, Riverdale and Rosewood have above-average body counts. From teenagers to adults, people tend to be in a constant state of grief. On Riverdale, it started slowly with the murder of Jason Blossom. However, season two quickly move Riverdale’s body count upward with the Black Hood running around, and season three did nothing to slow down the deaths either.

With “A” running around Rosewood, it was not surprising that so many ended up dead. However, “A” did not kill everyone alone. The Liars also had a hand in the constant deaths that occurred to Rosewood residents.

5 DISREGARDING SCHOOL

School in Riverdale is practically laughable, considering they’re hardly ever there. If they are in school, they are barely doing real school work. Instead, they are hanging out in between classes or playing sports. Riverdale places more emphasis on underage Veronica’s budding speakeasy and rum franchise than it does on the possibility of college.

Education was a more prominent fixture in Rosewood, mostly for Spencer. However, school could also quickly be dropped the second someone had a lead on the identity of “A.” It is a miracle none of these kids were expelled for lack of showing up.

4 TEACHER/STUDENT RELATIONSHIP

The teacher/student romance is a plotline that has been around for years. Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars have each used it with Aria and Ezra, and Archie and Ms. Grundy, respectively.

While both shows do acknowledge that the relationship is wrong, neither spends much time having the characters feel that the romances are inappropriate. The difference being that while the parents in Riverdale took action against Ms. Grundy, nothing negative happens to Ezra. Yet, Ezra may have been the larger of two evils, actively spying on the girls to write a book about them. In the end, Ms. Grundy ends up dead while Ezra gets a happy ending wedding to Aria.

3 GAME BOARD

Gryphons and Gargoyles is shown to be an addicting game that people played willingly. Like “Dungeons and Dragons” playing required the use of a character to portray and quests to go on. However, there was a twist. At the end of the game, players had gotten so addicted that they were willing to do anything to win, including committing suicide to ascend.

However, “AD’s” game is not optional. With evidence that the Liars had killed Rollins, they know they must finish playing the game. But, it is not just a game board. Within the board, some mechanics could leave significant injuries.

2 “JAILHOUSE ROCK”

Of all the similarities between these shows, the performance of Elvis Presley’s song was an unexpected one. Even though the uses are under different circumstances, each method includes a cover of the song by the main characters of each series, respectively. In Riverdale, Cheryl, Josie, Veronica, and the rest of the Vixens give a cheerleader performance while singing “Jailhouse Rock” to Archie. In their rendition, the performance takes place outside a jail.

In Pretty Little Liars, the performance is used during Aria’s panicked dream over something she had written about Ezra. In this version, Mona performs “Jailhouse Rock” to Aria as Ezra is pushed around by other people in prison jumpsuits.

1 MENTAL FACILITIES

For two small towns, they both happen to rely on the appearance of psychiatric facilities. In Pretty Little Liars, Radley Sanitarium is used as the center of many of the Liars’ answers and where Monica goes after she reveals herself as “A.” The Liars use Radley to search for clues throughout season three. Afterward, it turns out that the sanitarium had been where various dead ends regarding life’s mysteries lead back to. After the time jump, Ashley Marin had turned it into a hotel.

In Riverdale, The Sisters of Quiet Mercy is a significant location, not only acting as a mental institution. It also serves as a location for gay conversion therapy, other forms of torture, and a corrupt drug dealer, as well as the original home of Gryphons and Gargoyles.
