10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

The 2000s was an interesting time for the horror genre because the second coming of slashers following Scream ended sooner than expected. After what many consider to be an inconsistent decade — it’s not unheard of to hear someone say ’90s horror was weak compared to the decades before and after it — the millennium was a fresh start once things got going.

Despite its drawbacks like sadistic violence and excessive remaking, the 2000s was a fertile era where terror came in all shapes and sizes. Many hits were brewed and acknowledged, but then there are those horror films that could be given more attention for very different reasons. Today, at least ten of them are included with Amazon Prime subscriptions.

10 Uzumaki (2000)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

Dentist-turned-horror-mangaka Junji Itō has achieved fame in the West thanks to a universal love for his incredibly visceral artwork and macabre stories. However, there was a time he was unheard of outside of Japan. In a 2000 big-screen adaptation of Itō’s manga Uzumaki (Japanese for “spiral”), the author’s brand of cosmic horror is brought to life with mixed results. Overall, though, the film is better than people give it credit for.

In a small town in Uzumaki, one teenager notices how residents, including her father, are becoming more obsessed with spiral shapes. This fixation leads to death and more as the town is then affected by an all-consuming and intangible force.

9 The Gift (2000)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

Sam Raimi might be best known for The Evil Dead and Spider-Man, but his 2001 thriller The Gift needs more eyes on it. Stacked with a cast including Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Giovanni Ribisi, Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear, this hidden gem is a Southern Gothic horror with a touch of the supernatural.

In Brixton, Georgia, Blanchett’s psychic character gets entangled in a local murder, and it’s up to her to find the killer before she herself becomes a victim.

8 Creep (2004)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

Christopher Smith has delivered solid genre flicks like Black Death and Triangle, but it’s his 2004 subterranean survival horror that is desperate for a revisit. The choking atmosphere alone in this underground underdog will raise goosebumps.

Run Lola Run actor Franka Potente stars as an inebriated woman who gets trapped in a London tube station one night. As she searches for an exit, she’s hunted by someone — or something — inhabiting the labyrinthine tunnel system.

7 The Breed (2006)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

The late Wes Craven co-produced the creature feature The Breed. With a plot similar to 1977’s adaptation of David Fisher’s The Pack, the movie doesn’t break the mold as far as killer dog movies go. An unending amount of action and no-holds-barred thrills keeps viewers alert, though.

Two brothers and their friends land on a small and remote island where they appear to be the only inhabitants. In actuality, the place is populated by genetically enhanced and highly aggressive dogs. The humans struggle to find a way off the island as their plane is destroyed and their canine aggressors surround them.

6 The Gravedancers (2006)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

While Mike Mendez has never quite broken through to the mainstream like other indie horror directors, The Gravedancers is a successful display of his imagination and talent. It’s fairly original and loaded with ghoulish imagery. Anyone familiar with the 8 Films to Die For series will recognize this film.

The story follows the unearthly consequences of dancing on top of a gravesite; three people make this mistake and must now deal with the spirits of those they disturbed with their foolish frolicking.

5 Exhibit A (2007)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

The late 2000s saw found footage take off with the success of the Paranormal Activity series, but prior to its release, a little-known British movie served up a chilling account of domestic terror. It’s a horrifying diamond in the rough.

In Exhibit A, a family man’s desperation leads to a terrible fate for his family, and the daughter’s video camera captures everything for the world to see.

4 Dance Of The Dead (2008)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

Zombies were one of the most popular monsters in 2000s horror, and Dance of the Dead stands out because of its irreverence toward the subgenre. It’s no Shaun of the Dead, but Gregg Bishop’s crude and slapstick zom-com is irresistibly funny.

The corpses in a cemetery next to a power plant suddenly spring to life and look for sustenance. They eventually head for the local high school, which is having its prom that same night. The students and faculty then spend their evening fending off their insatiable zombie attackers.

3 The Burrowers (2008)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

Horror Westerns aren’t all that common, but when they do pop up, they’re often interesting and singular. The merging of two disparate genres yields unique stories like Bone Tomahawk, Dead Birds and Ravenous. And while the monster movie The Burrowers simmers more than boils, the wait is worthwhile.

Set in 1879, Native-American folklore explains a recent spate of horrific murders in the Wild West. Creatures referred to as The Burrowers are said to be behind these attacks and they won’t stop until they’re satisfied.

2 Hit And Run (2009)

10 Underrated 2000s Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime

While it’s certain a movie like Hit and Run isn’t high art, it’s also made for those viewers who enjoy watching someone get their comeuppance. The slasher film is based on a real-life and most unfortunate incident where a Texas driver ran over a man named Gregory Glenn Biggs and then drove home with his body embedded in her car windshield. And rather than going to the authorities, she left the man to die in her garage. The same accident was adapted in the 2007 movie Stuck.

This brutal adaptation isn’t exactly tasteful and veers off course from the basis, but given the cruelty of the ripped-from-the-headlines case, seeing the victim get their revenge on the culprit may provide some conflicted entertainment. A drunk driver commits the aforementioned crime one night, and after she buries the body, the stranger comes back to both haunt and punish her.

1 Chawz (2009)

Wild boars have infrequently popped up as the antagonists in horror; Razorback, Pig Hunt, Prey, and now Chawz (originally Chaw) are the most obvious examples. This South-Korean wildlife horror is the best of both worlds; it mixes regional humor with feral hog action. Some scenes drag more than enhance the overall film, but Chawz’s best moments make up for the protracted runtime.

In a quiet rural town near Mount Jiri where murder is unheard of, bodies start to pile up prior to a big festival. The assailant isn’t human, though; the killer is really a giant boar that no longer fears humans.
