Cartoon and video game crossovers faded from popularity in the 90s, but these 10 gaming icons could definitely helm a revival of that trend.

Since video game movies are on the return to relevancy with the recent releases of films like Mortal Kombat, it has many video game fans pondering how their favorites could work as part of an animated series. Sonic and Pikachu both did marvelous on the silver screen, but what would happen if some of their pixelated peers had their own animated series?

There are just so many colorful characters in the realm of gaming that it’s a wonder that they haven’t all at least tried to land a cartoon deal. Some of them are literally designed to be cartoons.

10 Cuphead

Case in point, take a look at Cuphead. Granted, a Netflix animated series is already in development, but the two mugs simply deserve some form of mention—especially since they were directly influenced by the cartoon medium itself.

Hopefully, the animated antics of Cuphead and his brother Mugman pack just as much of a wallop as their run-and-gun counterparts do. Of course, dealing with shady characters like King Dice and the Devil himself guarantees a slight edge to their adventures.

9 Captain Toad

Mario and Luigi already had their animated series in the 90s, so why not attempt a Nintendo-inspired spinoff series starring other characters? The Mushroom Kingdom doesn’t just belong to the Mario Bros., after all.

Starting with a recent entry into the franchise, why not give a series to treasure-tracker extraordinaire Captain Toad? Toad has evolved far beyond the fungal-headed sidekick he’s been in the past. Why not expand on those adventures by allowing him to play the hero in his own show?

8 The Koopalings

Then again, it might be fun to see a series from the bad guys’ perspective. There are few better ways to explore that idea in the Mushroom Kingdom than with Bowser and his eclectic offspring. It might not be as deep in terms of plot, but there’s no denying it would be a fun outing.

With such a colorful cast of characters amongst the Koopa kids, there’s definitely a possibility for some comedic gold here—especially with their wide variety of personalities.

7 Wario

Though not strictly a bad guy and more of a loveable prankster, Wario would do wonders in his own cartoon series. There are definitely some Shrek vibes going on with his character; just replace the onion jokes with garlic ones and we’re already off to a solid start.

With more than enough fertile ground for some ridiculous gross-out humor, a show featuring Mario’s doppelganger would be perfect as an animated comedy, particularly if it has Wario Land: Shake It’s art style to back it up.

6 Rayman

If looks alone didn’t give it away, Rayman and his limbless friends should definitely be up for some consideration for an animated series, especially if the developers took a few cues from Rayman Origins and Legends. The entire franchise practically screams Saturday morning cartoon.

A Rayman series definitely needs to pay attention to how the characters behave in the games. It would be best to start with some traditional 2D animation, maybe limit the character’s speech use, and definitely have a heavy reliance on physical comedy.

5 Fox McCloud and Company

How has Star Fox not had some sort of starship equivalent to a mech-focused anime? It has all the basic building blocks there for an exciting and action-packed series featuring Fox, Slippy, Falco, and the rest of the Lilac system.

The result might be some strange hybrid of Beaststars and Star Wars, but there’s no denying that there’s definitely an audience for that kind of gig—but there’s only one way to find out for sure.

4 Spyro

Spyro the Dragon is one of the most beloved gaming icons on the PlayStation, and, while he might have made an appearance in the Skylanders cartoon, he really does deserve something more on par with his adventures.

A series based on the Spyro games needs to come with all the action and humor that made the original games so enjoyable to begin with, and there’s no doubt that voice-acting legend, Tom Kenny would make a triumphant return to the role for some much-needed star power.

3 Sackboy

On the subject of PlayStation mascots, why not give a cutesy series to LittleBigPlanet’s Sackboy? The entire world of the game is absolutely begging to be turned into some sort of stop-motion, Tim-Burton-inspired animated adventure series.

It might be better suited for a more eccentric and experimental crowd, but since when has that ever hindered an audience’s enjoyment? Point is, the ideas are definitely there for something as cute and unique as the original platforming title.

2 Shovel Knight

All geeky kids need to be introduced to Monty Python at some point in their lives, so why not give them a sampling of absurdist humor in the form of a Shovel Knight cartoon? The game and its characters are already as absurd and vibrant as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, why not go full circle?

Though it’s anyone’s guess as to the visual style, the humor of the game should definitely take center stage along with the relationship between Shovel and Shield Knight. The idea is simply a treasure trove of possibilities.

1 The Animal Crossing Villagers

The series is a phenomenon; the characters are adorable, and the atmosphere is cottagecore at its finest, so why hasn’t Animal Crossing made its animated debut? While it’s true that it did receive an anime movie in 2006, a proper representation of the later games would be more than well-received.

It doesn’t even have to star the player character at all. In fact, it might be better to feature characters like Isabelle and K.K. Slider in the lead roles. The game’s popularity is simply too precious not to try.
