The universes of movies and books are always the most fascinating. They can range from fantastical worlds beyond our imaginations to horrible creations that one never wants to see. Of course, this leads fans to wonder: Is it possible for two universes to exist inside one another?

The question is brought into focus with two different films based on books. Zathura and Jumanji are two books written by the same author that were made into films with varying receptions. Despite certain things about the franchises not adding up— such as all the ways Jumanji: The Next Level doesn’t exactly make sense— the idea of the galaxy of Zathura and the jungles of Jumanji existing together does have some logic to it.

Of course, this then begs the question of who made the games. This simple yet imaginative theory is just one way that the two games could be connected in a larger universe.

Whether it be ripping a house right into outer space, trapping high schoolers in a video game, or even unleashing jungle animals in a small town, both games have the same effect: manipulating reality to their own whims and needs in order to fulfill their goals.

8 Different Locations

Every movie relies on intriguing locations and set pieces to draw the viewers in and captivate them, with the locations making unique and fantastical worlds pop in the best way possible. With each location, something new can be discovered.

As with Zathura and Jumanji, each has a different location, with one exploring the galaxy, and the other, the jungles. Because of the different locations, it allows one to wonder if perhaps the two exist in the same world, with each game transporting players to different locations within a shared universe.

Any movie series tries to create a new plot or storyline that is different from any other. However, many series blend together, with there being multiple examples of two movies actually having almost identical storylines.

With the board game films, the lack of difference in their plots almost helps the stories grow on their own. Both games and films have a simple goal: to bring the players together and to win the game. It’s an interesting idea that can allow both worlds to thrive together.

Typically, the best games, especially those based on movies, are the ones played with more than one person. It’s no fun to just play a game by oneself and both movies understand that, with the rules of the game specifically having it be required for there to be two or more players.

It’s a small connection for certain but still speaks volumes. If the rule of there being more than one player lines up, then other rules line up as well, such as the different cards and moves that in some way connect the two universes.

Creatures, monsters, and animals are staples in most worlds, whether they be horror creatures that are never fully explained or everyday animals. How the film uses them, however, is what defines them and in board game world, both games utilize different creatures the same way.

From lions, insects, and monkeys (oh my) to some scary sci-fi movie monsters that send shivers down audiences’ spines, the creatures of both games, although incredibly different, are utilized the same way: to terrorize the gamers and push them to their limits, either on a personal level or simply just to toy with them.

4 How To Win

The moment a game begins, players usually have one objective: to win. Of course, with the likes of the Jumanji and Zathura, the objective to win is typically a matter of life and death for the players and those trapped inside the game.

Each game affirms the connection to one another by having the end be the same. In order to beat the game, the players must play the game, no matter how deadly it becomes— raising again, the question as to who designed the game.

3 Boredom

By today’s standards, boredom is most often sated by texting a friend or going onto YouTube. Of course, sometimes, there’s another ailment to the sickness known as boredom.

In every incarnation of either Zathura or Jumanji, every victim who falls prey to the board game suffers from a case of boredom. Whether this is an effect of the game to lure players in or just a coincidence, it’s strong enough to warrant a shared universe between the pair.

2 Stuck Inside

Now, no one wants to be stuck inside of a board game, let alone either being stuck in the infernal jungles or a distant galaxy. Yet, the realms of Zathura and Jumanji have this effect on several people, not just the typical players.

Whether it be Dax Shepherd’s Astronaut, Nick Jonas’s Alex, or Alan Parrish, one of Robin Willaims best movie roles, these two games have sucked in many a player and not let them go, leaving it to audiences to wonder if the lost players ever crossed paths in the vast universe.

1 Aftermath Of Winning

Usually, whenever someone wins a game, they shout and scream and throw their hands up in excitement. However, whenever someone wins either Jumanji or Zathura, they usually have to hold on for dear life and pray.

Whether it be a black hole or a vortex that turns back time, both games have a knack for violently ending the game. While it doesn’t seem like a large connection, the fact that both games have a similar ending raises a few eyebrows on the heads of film theorists.
