While many cartoons are fairly whacky by nature, Nickelodeon’s forever-favored SpongeBob SquarePants definitely has more strange episodes than other series. The well-loved sponge doesn’t just find himself in situations where he gets squashed by a hammer or chased around like other classic cartoons. No one can ever forget the traditional clumsy, and even questionable, incidents in other cartoons, like Tom and Jerry, for example.
There are some pretty weird things that happen to the characters of Bikini Bottom though. Dedicated SpongeBob fans may have differing opinions on which episode was the funniest, sweetest, and even terrifying, but what about which episodes are the weirdest?
10 Salsa Imbecilicus
Plankton invents “salsa imbecilicus” (or “idiot sauce”) in yet another bid to steal the Krabby Patty formula; the sauce is designed to emulate Patrick’s aloofness and thus, distract everyone in town. Sandy unknowingly gives Plankton the idea and the unique adventure unfolds.
In an attempt to collect Patrick’s DNA, Plankton dives inside his mouth and has a strange wrestling match with his tongue. The episode continues to show how weird it is with everyone in Bikini Bottom acting like Patrick, even showing SpongeBob making Krabby Patties out of mud.
9 Spongehenge
The ending of “Spongehenge” is what officially weirds out all viewers from how quickly everything changes. When fans think SpongeBob finally saves the day and himself, the episode ends on a pretty grim and just plain strange note.
Facing a problem with attracting jellyfish, SpongeBob finds out his pores actually create music through the strong wind gusts suddenly hiting Bikini Bottom. As SpongeBob builds the porous stone statues that are various replicas of himself, the episode ends with him realizing he’s wasted so much time and everyone around him has dramatically changed.
8 Fungus Among Us
Although it’s not the absolute outlandish episode in comparison to others, “The Fungus Among Us” is certainly uncomfortable to watch to a certain extent.
For many viewers, the strange and disgusting infection SpongeBob spreads to all of the Krusty Krab’s customers is visually disturbing. It’s downright bizarre to watch a contagion turn the town upside down and create overall misery for the characters. Watching SpongeBob become physically sicker with this infection causes a lot of discomfort among viewers, even years after it first aired.
7 Chocolate With Nuts
This will remain a huge favorite of the show long after its initial release in 2001. Although it’s been said to be one if the funniest episodes, it’s also one of the weirdest due to its wackiness.
The random citizen who screams the memorable line “CHOCOLATE” doesn’t necessarily have a reason behind his aggression. He just chases the innocent beginner salespeople that SpongeBob and Patrick are while frantically yelling for the candy. The randomness in the episode constitutes it as pretty mind-boggling to watch, but of course, being overall hilarious.
6 Squidward In Clarinetland
This trippy episode is an interesting sight altogether. Not only is Squidward confused to the point of paranoia and exhaustion, but viewers may be too after watching this zany episode.
Although the episode seems to show SpongeBob innocently getting Squidward’s clarinet for him in the end, the disgruntled musician experiences something truly strange. After checking the locker Mr. Krabs lends them for personal items, Squidward steps into a whole new world inside the locker called Clarinetland. The peculiar land gets Squidward eaten by a bird and placed inside a pinball machine game. As a familiar nod to Alice In Wonderland, fans are left wondering what just happened that left Squidward in a psychedelic-like experience.
5 Frankendoodle
Although “DoodleBob” is such a meme-able reference nowadays for veteran fans, this episode was certainly one of the stranger ones because of its frightening aspect, and also its combination of humans and Bikini Bottom inhabitants.
“Doodlebob” is drawn by SpongeBob after he and Patrick discover a “magic pencil” originally from the surface world. SpongeBob’s creation turns into a nightmare, which is why most viewers may argue and say this episode is scarier than it is weird, but it’s actually one of the most bizarre episodes due to its unique mixture of animation and the real world. What fans question but also enjoy is the sight of humans involved in the plot.
4 Whirly Brains
This episode has that familiar cartoonish slapstick comedy in its entirety, but it’s definitely an odd one. The basic premise is SpongeBob and Patrick discover the “whirly brains” game, which involves their brains literally helicoptering through the air as they control their movements from remotes.
The brains can approach anyone and anything by eerily floating. The two best friends certainly give Squidward a scare, but the real wacky portion of the episode isn’t just the brains flying around. It’s actually how the game players look when they’re controlling the flying brains. Their eye sockets and skulls are completely empty, so when Spongebob and Patrick talk to other fish, they all look like cracked-open toys.
3 I Was A Teenage Gary
Being one of the oddly disturbing episodes in terms of its imagery, this episode centers on Spongebob’s run-in with a snail plasma injection for Gary.
The injection clearly leads to some problems, but the intense music and strange transformation of SpongeBob are what freaks out viewers. SpongeBob starts meowing, walking slowly, and then suddenly his entire body starts to disturbingly change into a snail. Squidward even turns into a snail, with the entire episode ending with a totally strange cliffhanger of Gary and snail-versions of SpongeBob and Squidward meowing into the night.
2 SB-129
In case fans have a hard time remembering what episode this is, it’s when Squidward asks, “why is everything chrome?!” After getting trapped in the Krusty Krab’s freezer, Squidward is frozen and is thawed out 2,000 years into the future, where even the coral is sprayed with some weird chrome-like spray.
Squidward gets transported through time to witness the rambunctious cavemen versions of SpongeBob and Patrick, and he can’t even get some peace and quiet to practice his clarinet as he wants originally. The reason why it’s one of the weirdest episodes is mainly because of how Squidward is eventually transported to an eerie space in time where he is finally alone. Once he says “alone,” multiple voices echo the same word and Squidward then realizes he’s trapped in an empty place until he is miraculously brought back to his time period. “SB-129” is in a category of its own due its overall unexpected elements.
1 Rock Bottom
Many fans find “Rock Bottom” as one of the scariest because of how lost and afraid poor SpongeBob is when he and Patrick innocent go to Glove World.
Stuck in a dark and lonely abysmal place, SpongeBob has to navigate his way through the strange town’s ways. Perhaps the weirdest part of this episode is the apparent language the inhabitants of Rock Bottom speak, which is the hilarious raspberry sound. Although this episode doesn’t have as much perturbing or surprising moments as others do, the whole episode is a reminder of what it’s like to be in a different place where help is limited. Also, fans may understand why this is indeed the weirdest episode because of the funny raspberry sound in talking, the darkness of Rock Bottom, and above all, the fact that Glove World is a thing.
