10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Science fiction is a genre that focuses on humans and there connections to technology, other civilizations, and, sometimes, monsters. Each of these kinds of films need likable characters that audiences can still manage to relate to even when their circumstances are completely different from reality.

This being said, some of these characters start off great, but, in an instant, they can easily do something that makes audiences rethink their feelings about them and the movie as a whole. There are a few particular science fiction films where this is all too real of an issue.

10 Indy Climbs Into A Fridge During A Nuke Test In Indiana Jones And The Crystal Skull

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Indiana Jones is a beloved character, but this ridiculous scene takes away some of his credibility. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which some fans believe is underrated, surrounds an adventure that leads to Indy discovering an ancient alien spaceship, but that is still somewhat more believable than him surviving a nuclear blast inside a fridge.

Sure, Indiana Jones has had his fair share of fights or action scene that seem a little too cool to be realistic, but this scene’s lack of believability makes the character hard to root for as this moment just makes it clear how constructed this film.

9 Gale Blows Up Prim In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

The Hunger Games franchise made a huge impact on theaters as it brought in all kinds of audiences and started a trend of dystopian books being made into films. Mockingjay Part 2, which leaves some questions unanswered, is the last installment of the series. In it, one of Katniss’s best friends, Gale, accidentally kills her sister with a bomb, ruining him as a character.

After this scene Katniss cuts Gale off completely, even though he was her only friend that stuck with her and helped keep her mom and sister safe back in District 12 before the uprising. Gale was considered a kind person before and even a potential love interest for Katniss, but this scene makes him so unlikeable in a way that doesn’t feel accurate to his character.

8 Lucy Turns In A Computer In Lucy

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Lucy is a film that explores the idea that humans only use 10% and ponders what would happen if they could access it all at the same time. This concept has little to no scientific backing, but what ruins the main character, Lucy, in this film is the fact that she becomes a computer at the very end of the movie.

Her decision to become the machine is flawed and her character is so inhuman that audiences cannot connect with her. She had an interesting trajectory before this scene, but the conclusion of her story is super anti-climatic and a bit of a cop out.

7 Anakin Becomes Darth Vader And Yells In Revenge Of The Sith

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Revenge of the Sith is the third Star Wars prequel that follows Anakin as he makes his final shift to the dark side. Though he does end up killing kids and, indirectly, his wife, the scene that ruins him as a character is when he yells “no” as he realizes what he has become.

This may be a small action, but it makes him unlikeable because he made every decision that got him to that point, consciously. No one forced him to do anything bad that he did and he acts like he’s still the victim in this situation.

6 Rey Uses Force Healing In Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

In the third installment of the most recent Star Wars trilogy, Rey learns how to use force healing and, in doing so, saves Kylo Ren and many other people. When she uses her healing ability, it practically makes the events of the past films seem ridiculous because she could have solved all of her problems with this force power.

Not to mention, force healing completely disrupts the stories of some of the earlier Star Wars films. Rey doing this not only ruins her believability, but it also creates a major plot hole in the entire Star Wars universe that fans have definitely voice upset over.

5 Dr. Emma Russell Sacrifices Herself To Save Godzilla In Godzilla

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Godzilla, which many Redditors have unpopular opinions of, follows people that work to keep the world safe from big titans that threaten to destroy the world while Godzilla roams the surface of the Earth to help protect it. Dr. Emma Russell is the villain of this story as she frees all the titans to get her revenge on Godzilla.

In the end, she ends up sacrificing herself to save Godzilla and the rest of the world from the titans that she purposely unleased, which is completely unfounded in realistic decision making. As a character, she would have made a good villain, but her logic is nonsensical here.

4 Norah Blowing Herself Up In Underwater

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Underwater is sci-fi horror film that follows a drilling team at the bottom of the ocean who need to escape the station while avoiding being killed by a mysterious sea creature. Norah Price, played by Kristen Stewart, makes the choice to blow herself up, along with the monster, to get her revenge on it.

Even though she is undeniably able to make it to safety by the end of the movie and would be able to survive, her anger outweighs her need to live, which is practically against human nature. Norah, in this scene, ruins herself as a character and deprives the film of a happy ending.

3 Superman and Batman Bond Over Their Mom’s Names Both Being Martha In Batman Vs Superman

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Batman v Superman follows the two superheroes as they battle it out because people fear that Superman is too powerful for them to control or stop if he ever does anything bad towards humanity. What ruins both these superhero’s in this film is their dialogue during their fight scene that somehow causes them to align into a team.

The bond over the fact that both their mom’s names are Martha, which is less that convincing considering they were previously trying to kill one another. This film attempts to make these characters serious and dramatic, but this scene makes them both look like fools.

2 Maisie Lockwood Is A Clone In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

10 Well Written SciFi Movie Characters Ruined By One Scene

Fallen Kingdom is about Claire and Owen’s return to Isla Nublar to save the remaining dinosaurs and features Maisie Lockwood, the grand daughter of Benjamin Lockwood, a previous business partner of the park’s owner, John Hammond.

Maisie is a sweet girl with no family to take care of her, but what ruins her character is the fact that at the end of the movie it’s revealed that she’s actually a clone of Lockwood’s daughter. It’s a plot twist that actually doesn’t effect the plot that much and Maisie is less human and less likable because of this choice.

1 Rick Deckard Forces Himself On Rachael In Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner, which influenced The Matrix greatly, follows Rich Deckard a replicant hunter who falls in love with Rachael who is a replicant, herself. Deckard is played by Harrison Ford, who adds to the character’s stoicism and tough façade.

However, when Deckard does eventually come onto Rachael, the scene looks anything, but consensual as he grabs her forcefully and kisses her aggressively. His image of being a mysterious futuristic man is overshadowed in this moment by his aggressive and frightening nature. No one likes to see violence committed against women and it makes Deckard wildly dislikable.
