With multiple episodes either all on the same topic or following a similar theme, there are docuseries about everything from historical figures to cooking, sports, healing and dancing.

Docuseries can be educational, thought-provoking, mysterious, or conversation starters. And these 12 docuseries were deemed the best Netflix launched in 2020, according to critics on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. (Note that some new docuseries don’t yet have a rating on the site and thus could not be included.)

12 Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness – 86%

Call it perfect timing, but this docuseries was released right at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic when people were stuck at home and schools and businesses were closed. Had it been released any other time, would anyone have watched? Who knows. Nonetheless, those that did watch loved being able to escape into the incredible story.

Tiger King is all about eccentric, self-proclaimed Tiger King Joe Exotic, his desire for fame, and his intense hatred for rival big cat owner Carole Baskin. The series was one of the most talked about when it was released and continues to be the thing of memes today. Just when you think the story can’t get any crazier, it does.

11 Street Food: Latin America – 86%

It’s obvious that series highlighting delicious, mouth-watering food tend to do well, and this one is no exception. Premiering in April, it follows the exploration of street food from around the world and how it differs from country to country, region to region.

Exploring Asia in the first season, which was released in 2019, season two focuses on Latin America, visiting Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia to see what street food looks like there.

10 Trial by Media – 86%

Organized as a miniseries, there are six episodes in the first season, each covering a different court case where the media circus and coverage surrounding it had an impact on the way people viewed the situation, as well as potentially even the outcome.

From a talk show on trial following the murder of one of its guests to the Bernhard Goetz “subway vigilante” case, which inspired that scene in the new Joker film, each story is unique and as fascinating as the next.

9 Deaf U – 88%

It’s tough enough dealing with the challenges of going to college, and this docuseries highlights the additional challenges that deaf and hard of hearing students encounter during their studies. It follows a group attending Washington’s Gallaudet University, which specializes in education for the deaf and hard of hearing, to better understand their journeys.

The idea behind Deaf U was to show how different and diverse the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing people are. The show was created, in part, by deaf activist, model, and actor Nyle DiMarco.

8 Challenger: The Final Flight – 89%

Viewers are clearly intrigued by the idea of space exploration, as evidenced by the variety of shows and movies coming out of late that follow this theme. This limited docuseries looked into an unfortunate part of the equation: the 1986 NASA Space Shuttle Challenger accident.

Interviews with those who lived through the trauma see them recall their stories in heartbreaking detail. There aren’t any big shocking reveals, and some have pointed out that facts are missing. Nonetheless, Challenger: The Final Flight is a look back at an event that became a national tragedy.

7 Cheer – 96%

Anyone who doesn’t deem cheerleading a sport might think differently after seeing this docuseries, which goes behind the scenes of a nationally ranked team. Seeing the hard work that goes into routines, complex choreography, injuries, and camaraderie, brings a whole new respect to cheerleading.

Cheer not only ranks as one of Netflix’s best new docuseries of 2020, but also among the best docuseries overall of the year.

6 Song Exploder – 100%

Yes, the top-six highest rated docuseries released by Netflix in 2020 all garnered perfect scores. This one is about musicians and their creative song-writing processes.

Based on the popular podcast, the first season followed a diverse group of musicians, from Alicia Keys to Lin-Manuel Miranda and R.E.M. Volume 2, out on December 15, 2020, looks at a new group of musicians, like Dua Lipa, The Killers, and Nine Inch Nails. It’s a must-watch for music fans.

5 Lenox Hill – 100%

Medical dramas are entertaining, but this docuseries looks at four real-life doctors working in neurosurgery, emergency medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology at the Lenox Hill Hospital.

It shows the real trauma and intense situations they deal with on a daily basis through its nine episodes to date, giving equal focus to both the triumphs and the downfalls.

4 Home Game – 100%

Forgot boring football and soccer: this docuseries profiles various sports from around the world, each of which is unique and dangerous. Calcio Storico, for example, is a traditional sport in Florence, Italy that can be described as rugby meets mixed martial arts. Kok Boru from Krgyzstan, meanwhile, is similar to polo, with horses and a dead goat as the “ball.”

It gets even crazier through the eight episodes in season one, which premiered in the summer. Alongside an intimate look at each sport, narrator Mark Strong also discusses the various cultures surrounding the communities in which they are played.

3 Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak – 100%

Timely given the outbreak of COVID-19, which was declared a pandemic in March 2020, it’s no surprise that this docuseries was watched by a lot of subscribers. It talks about various pandemics in history, like the Ebola outbreak in Africa, and looks at the possibility of new pandemics, including influenza (the series was released in January, just as the existence of COVID-19 was becoming a public concern).

There’s also talk of research into a universal vaccine as well as controversial topics like anti-vaxxers. It’s one of many TV series and movies released during the pandemic, but remains one of the best.

2 Connected – 100%

How are we all connected to one another? This docuseries, released in August while most people were in lockdown due to COVID-19, follows science journalist and host Latif Nasser, Director of Research at the New York Public Radio show Radiolab as he explores the answer to this question.

There are just six episodes that look at not only how people are connected to one another but also to the world and universe as a whole. He looks at concepts from surveillance and people feeling like they’re being watched to numerical probability and how it applies to everything from classical music to tax fraud.

1 Immigration Nation – 100%

See actual footage from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, shot from 2017 through to 2020, and learn about their work during the Trump era. Despite facing alleged legal threats, the show went on and has since been described as displaying “the inhumanity and unconscionable cruelty” of the tactics used.

Released in August, controversial or not, the docuseries is universally praised. That said, a statement released by ICE says the agency is “shocked by the mischaracterizations made by the production company” and disputes the allegations made by the filmmakers.
