A three-time Academy Award nominee and a Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, Laura Linney has had plenty of memorable roles during her incredible movie career. Whether portraying a doctor in the African Congo jungle being chased by gigantic primates or the housekeeper of Sherlock Holmes in Mr. Holmes, Linney is seldom anything less than great.

Currently, Linney plays Wendy McBride in the hit Netflix dark dramatic series Ozark, an intelligent power-hungry wife who wants to prove her worth in the family business of laundering money for the Cartel.

In P.S., Louise Harrington (Larua Linney) plays a divorcee who gets a chance to fall in love with someone who looks like her high school boyfriend (Topher Grace), who had died in a car crash. It is a second chance of first love that seems to be too good to be true.

Audiences panned the film for a collection of clichés and stereotypes. There is some sort of attraction between Linney and Grace, but it only lingers around for a while before quickly disappearing.

Mrs. X (Linney), one of the richest women in New York City, hires Annie (Scarlett Johansson) as a nanny because she mistakes her for one after she saves her son’s life. Mrs. X leads a life full of neglect, playing the part of both the monster and the prey. She neglects her son Grayer (Nicholas Reese Art) but her husband (Paul Giamatti) disregards her. She lies to her husband about her pregnancy while her husband is committing adultery and even sexually attacks the nanny.

The snobbish Mrs. X grows to appreciate Annie, even writing a sincere apology letter stating how she helped her change her life. The Nanny Diaries was not well received by audiences as a feel-good movie about empowerment.

13 Mr. Holmes (6.9)

Mr. Holmes continues Sherlock Holmes’ (Ian McKellen) story into his retirement as he ages and begins to forget aspects of his cases including multiple unsolved cases.

Holmes mainly relies on his housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her son (Milo Parker) to help him try to close the unsolved cases of his past. Mr. Holmes is a fun new adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes story.

Despite not speaking to their father for 20 years, they feel compelled to be by his side, realizing the profound impact their father had on both of their lives.

Linney and Hoffman, along with Philip Bosco, help paint a beautiful portrait of the comfort and struggles that arise in every family. The Savages highlights the nuances that define each family.

10 The Squid And The Whale (7.3)

The Squid and the Whale was an Indie movie about a family slowly falling apart when parents (Laura Linney and Jeff Daniels) decide to get divorced and their two sons choose sides.

Joan (Linney) becomes an independent woman during the separation and begins to become a successful writer as she fully focuses on her career, which causes even more tension between the family members since her success begins to overshadow her ex-husband’s (Daniels).

9 Sully (7.4)

Sully is based on the real-life events of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) emergency landing a plane on the Hudson River in New York and saving everyone on board.

The movie shows the event and also delves into the aftermath of the investigation into how Sully responded to the emergency situation and how he and his family, including his wife (Laura Linney), have to endure after the crash.

8 You Can Count On Me (7.5)

At an early age, Sammy (Laura Linney) and her brother Terry (Mark Ruffalo) lost their parents in a car accident in You Can Count on Me. Years later, Terry returns to their childhood home to visit his sister, who is now raising a son of her own. Out of money and reluctant to go back to live with his suicidal girlfriend, Terry decides to stay with his sister and her son Rudy (Rory Culkin) for a while.

The Academy gave Linney a Best Actress nomination for her portrayal of a divorced mom working as a loan officer to try and make ends meet. Her onscreen chemistry with Ruffalo did not hurt either.

7 Love Actually (7.6)

Love Actually examines eight couples’ romantic relationships during the month before Christmas in London, England. Linney plays Sarah, an American working at a graphic design company who is hopelessly in love with Karl (Rodrigo Santoro).

They finally get together at the company’s Christmas party and have their first kiss on the way home; unfortunately, it is interrupted by a phone call from Sarah’s mentally ill brother, Michael (Michael Fitzgerald). While they get another chance late Christmas eve, they fail to rekindle the fire. Ultimately, Sarah ended her evening with her brother Michael in his care facility. While she did not have much time on screen, Linney did a fantastic job portraying a character who never really got a chance at true love. While that might be the case, she did also have the best kiss in the movie.

6 The Life Of David Gale (7.6)

In The Life of David Gale, Constance Harraway (Laura Linney) is a Deathwatch activist and a close friend of David Gale (Kevin Spacey). After a night with Gale, she is found raped and murdered with a plastic bag tied over her head in handcuffs. Gayle is accused of murder and sent to death row.

Although Linney’s time on screen was brief, the story centers around her character’s death. Co-stars Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet could not save the movie, as the film was criticized for being a noxious melodrama with too many plot twists that no one cared about.

5 Primal Fear (7.7)

Laura Linney is Janet Venable, a prosecutor and former lover of defense attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) in Primal Fear. An altar boy (Edward Norton) murders a priest, prompting Vail to represents the boy free of charge in exchange for the publicity. However, Vail soon realizes that the case is not that easy, and his client is far from simple.

Linney takes a stereotypical character that has been done to death and gives her depth and life, while also complementing both Norton and Gere’s characters.

4 Mystic River (7.9)

Two men kidnap Dave (Tim Robbins) and sexually abuse him for 4 days until he escapes in Mystic River. 25 years later, we see how that event has affected the lives of all three boys – Jimmy Markum, Sean Devine, and Dave Boyle.

Laura Linney plays Annabeth Markum, the wife of Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn), an ex-con who is trying to find out who killed their daughter. She is that constant voice in Jimmy’s head reminding him to do whatever it takes to find their daughter’s murderer, describing him as a king who will do whatever needs to be done even if it is hard.

3 The Big C (8.1)

Laura Linney stars in this dramatic comedy as Cathy, who has lived her entire life as a people pleaser, but everything changes when Cathy is diagnosed with terminal cancer. The Big C follows Cathy as she tries to change her life and put herself first.

Cathy finally reckons with what she really wants out of life instead of just following what her husband or son or brother wants and it’s completely engaging to see Laura Linney lose herself in the role.

2 The Truman Show (8.1)

Inspired by a Twilight Zone episode called “Special Service,” Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), an insurance salesman, realizes his life is actually a television reality show. Laura Linney plays Hannah Hill, an actress pretending to be Truman’s domesticated always joyful wife. Meryl Burbank is one of Linney’s most memorable characters.

Meryl is the show’s infomercial model, a role that eventually leads Burbank to realize that his life is a lie. On an interesting note, Linney studied Sears catalogs from the 1950s to help her with the various poses in the film.

Laura Linney stars alongside Jason Bateman in this intense Netflix show about a family who is pulled into the criminal world. Marty (Bateman) begins laundering money for a cartel after his business partner is caught stealing from the cartel and his whole family is affected because of it.

Wendy (Linney) has to change her entire life to try to survive and keep her children safe and Linney portrays this complex character perfectly.
