2020 Has A LOT Of Long Overdue Movie Sequels

2020 will see the arrival of many movies, most of them sequels – but there are a lot of long overdue ones. The remakes, reboots, and sequels trend has been dominating the movie industry for a while now, with some of these being big hits and others not so much. Many of them weren’t well received when they were announced, but ended up being a pleasant surprise for viewers, and there are others that only marked the end of their franchises (a moment of silence for Terminator: Dark Fate).

2019 had a good number of sequels, such as Avengers: Endgame, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, Toy Story 4, IT: Chapter 2, and Frozen 2, but it was a year mostly marked by big cinematic events and movies that brought closure to their universes, as is the case with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. 2020 has a bunch of sequels lined up, but what makes them different to those released in 2019 is that they are mostly long overdue sequels.

Many sequels have served to reboot franchises that had been inactive for years, such as David Gordon Green’s Halloween, and the same will happen with some of the sequels to be released in 2020.

Long Overdue Movie Sequels Coming Out in 2020

The list of movies releasing in 2020 has a big number of long overdue sequels – some of them are highly anticipated titles, others not so much. First in line is Bad Boys For Life, directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence after 16 years. The story will follow Detective Lt. Michael Lowrey (Smith) and Inspector Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) who team up once more when a Romanian mob boss seeks revenge against the pair as they are about to officially retire. Next is Legally Blonde 3, with Reese Witherspoon reprising her role as Elle Woods and Karen McCullah Lurz and Kirsten Smith back as screenwriters. It’s the first Legally Blonde movie in 10 years (or 16, as Legally Blondes was a spinoff and didn’t star Witherspoon).

Top Gun is also getting a sequel in 2020 with Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick. It only took Top Gun a bit over three decades to bring back Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Val Kilmer as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, along with a new generation of pilots, among those Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Goose’s son. For those looking for some comedy, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter will be back in Bill & Ted Face The Music, 28 years after Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey was released. This new adventure will see Bill and Ted being warned by a visitor from the future of the need for them to create a song that will save the entire universe.

Last but not least, is Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Following the model of movies like Halloween and Terminator: Dark Fate, this new Ghostbusters movie is a direct sequel to Ghostbusters II (1989), setting aside Paul Feig’s 2016 reboot. Ghostbusters: Afterlife will follow Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two children, Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), who move to a farm in Oklahoma inherited from Callie’s late father. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver are reprising their roles from the previous movies, and it’s believed that Trevor and Phoebe are Egon’s grandchildren. All these sequels should have happened years ago, but if they offer interesting stories with well developed characters, viewers won’t mind that they took more than a decade to arrive.
