With its satirical take on the media landscape it belongs to, 30 Rock helped to make self-awareness the norm in modern comedy. Liz Lemon’s experiences as the head writer of TGS were heavily influenced by series creator and star Tina Fey’s experiences as the head writer of SNL. All seven seasons of Fey’s wonderfully wacky sitcom started with strong premiere episodes, but some of those premieres are rated higher on IMDb than others.

7 Pilot (7.3)

According to Time, Tina Fey initially wrote the pilot of 30 Rock about a cable news show, but since she found herself drawing from her SNL experiences, she ended up rewriting the show to focus on the head writer of a sketch variety series. In the pilot episode, Jack takes over NBC and retools The Girlie Show as TGS with Tracy Jordan and enforces a new star on Liz.

It’s surprising that the pilot episode is 30 Rock’s lowest-rated season premiere on IMDb, because it got the series off to a very strong start, but it’s also a testament to the show’s writers that it kept getting better over time. Like all great pilots, 30 Rock’s first ever episode deftly sets up the premise while telling the audience exactly who all the characters are. Liz develops dynamics with Jack and Tracy in this episode that would continue to evolve for years.

6 The Beginning Of The End (7.6)

“The Beginning of the End,” the first episode of 30 Rock’s final season, was the show’s only season premiere not to be written or co-written by Tina Fey. It was instead penned by Jack Burditt, who also wrote for Frasier, Just Shoot Me!, and Modern Family. In the season 7 premiere, Liz learns that Jack is intentionally sabotaging NBC’s fall schedule.

The premiere episode of the final season was a promising sign that the show would go out on a high note. It focuses on 30 Rock’s central dynamic, Liz and Jack, and has the same rapid-fire gag rate that fans came to expect.

5 Season 4 (7.8)

30 Rock’s fourth season premiere opens with one of the show’s most hilarious self-aware gags as Jack says, “Welcome to Season Four, which is, of course, the name of this restaurant.” The season kicks off with Liz and Pete seeking new talent, Tracy trying to relate to the common man, and Kenneth leading the pages on strike after learning about Jack’s giant bonus.

This episode provided a timely satire of the then-ongoing financial crisis, as Kenneth and the pages face cutbacks while Jack and his cronies’ corporate bonuses are safe, similar to a real-life controversy at AIG.

4 TIE: The Fabian Strategy (8.0)

In the season 5 premiere “The Fabian Strategy,” Jack responds to his domestic problems with Avery by getting involved in Liz’s own relationship with Carol, a pilot and TGS superfan played by Matt Damon.

Damon made a surprisingly great addition to the 30 Rock ensemble as Carol, but the highlights of this premiere episode are its subplots. Jenna becoming a producer at TGS was a fun development and Tracy struggling to adjust to life without Kenneth (and seeing him everywhere) was delightfully absurd.

3 TIE: Dance Like Nobody’s Watching (8.0)

“Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” begins season 6 in suitably ludicrous fashion as Kenneth prepares for what he believes to be the impending Rapture. Jenna gets one of the episode’s funniest storylines as a biting Simon Cowell-esque judge on a children’s singing competition series.

When season 6 premiered, “Dance Like Nobody’s Watching” reminded fans and critics alike of what makes 30 Rock so great. It has meta nods to the show’s now-familiar formula, classic diva behavior from both Jenna and Tracy, and a handful of memorable moments between Jack and Liz. The episode was notable for taking Liz in a new direction, leaving behind her self-effacing bite and giving her a lot more confidence.

2 Do-Over (8.2)

After deciding she wants to become a mother in season 2, Liz meets with a caseworker from an adoption agency at the beginning of season 3. The caseworker, played by guest star Megan Mullally, observes Liz at work and meets all her co-workers. It goes as disastrously as Liz expects, but after a bump on the head gives the caseworker short-term memory loss, Liz has a second chance at making a good impression – hence the title, “Do-Over.”

As much fun as 30 Rock’s meta parodies of the media are, the show’s farcical take on relatable human situations is what made it a hit and “Do-Over” is a prime example of that.

1 SeinfeldVision (8.3)

After discovering a loophole in Jerry Seinfeld’s NBC contract in the season 2 premiere “SeinfeldVision,” Jack starts digitally inserting the legendary comedian into the network’s entire line-up of programming, from reality shows to game shows to drama series.

Since it’s widely regarded to be one of the show’s best episodes, it’s unsurprising that “SeinfeldVision” is ranked as 30 Rock’s finest season premiere. Jack’s gimmicky use of Seinfeld’s likeness is a perfectly meta setup for the comic to guest-star on the show. Seinfeld brilliantly leaned into the show’s self-awareness, even taking a moment to plug Bee Movie directly to the camera, and shared hysterical chemistry with both Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin.
