Few sitcoms typify the 1990’s television landscape the way 3rd Rock from the Sun did. Four aliens took human form to infiltrate Earth and study humanity. It got strange as it became apparent incredibly quickly that this was not the A-team.
The leader of the mission, and the head of their fake family, was Dick Solomon. His profession was a physics professor but his calling was speaking his mind, and getting himself in a lot of trouble doing it. Fortunately, Dick always had a half-hearted apology to back it up which his friends learned to accept as the best they were going to get.
10 Formerly An Ice Ball
Dr. Mary Albright was a Professor of Anthropology at Pendelton State University. She was given the dubious task of sharing an office with a new Professor of Physics by the name of Dr. Dick Solomon. This led to a turbulent relationship between the two that was at the core of the series.
Many of Dick’s more insane moments and conversations happened alongside Mary. One time, she simply commented on the world changing after reading about a Hard Rock Café opening in Vietnam. He responded with, “It certainly has. Did you know it used to be entirely covered with ice?”
9 A Mountain Climbing Expert
Dick and Mary’s relationship was a winding path to say the least. At one point, it completely imploded thanks to the interference of The Big Giant Head. That being said, Dick didn’t really need a lot of help ruining things. He could handle that all on his own.
At one point, Mary was spending time with Tommy as friends. Dick got jealous and Nina commented on men thinking they owned the mountain once climbing it. Dick looked at her and said, “I spent two years climbing that mountain, and I’m not about to let some guy yodel on it!”
8 Making A Choice
The core of the aliens’ mission on Earth was to infiltrate its population and conduct research from within. This specific team got distracted and spent about six years longer on the planet than originally intended.
When planning the mission, someone had to become a human woman to gauge that experience. Early in the series, Sally was unhappy about being the woman and asked Dick why it had to be her. He replied with three simple words, “Because you lost.”
7 Troubles with Women
Throughout the series, Dick constantly lamented not being able to understand women. That being said, he was almost always the architect of his own issues so he really shouldn’t have been blaming the women around him for the problems he created.
One moment saw Tommy, Dick, and Officer Don Orville sharing a drink as they discussed their recent lady problems. As always, Dick had the most unique, and partially accurate, take on women in general, “You can’t live with ’em and you can’t have heterosexual sex without ’em.”
6 Rising Below The Situation
No one was afraid to sink deeper into the muck than Dick Solomon. Even the rest of his crew was able to hold the moral high ground better than him. Dick was surprisingly petty and vengeful, and spun out of control incredibly quickly.
After his breakup with Mary, he found himself sinking further into a juvenile but surprisingly inventive prank war with her. This led to Dick lamenting the situation and saying, “Women always act so adult, but just like that they’ll sink all the way down to your level.”
5 Questioning God
Mary didn’t want to go to a wedding by herself, something that was completely understandable. But what was less understandable was her decision to take Dick as her date. There was no way he wasn’t going to embarrass her, even if he was in his right mind.
Unfortunately for Mary, Dick was sick and chugging cough medicine. This led to more than a few awkward moments, including Dick asking Mary if God was in the church. When she asked him to be quiet, Dick replied with, “Okay, but be sure to introduce me later, because I want some answers.”
4 The Physics Of Killing
Dick was a huge fan of physics. And thanks to being an alien from an advanced race with a lot of experience in space travel, he had a very complete knowledge of physics. The downside was that his students weren’t even close to keeping up with him.
At one point, Dick was explaining the science of shooting a gun. He accurately pointed out that physics makes guns work. That being said, he did take the argument a couple of steps too far when he said, “Guns don’t kill people. Physics kills people!”
3 Even The Score
If Dick had a nemesis on the series, it was a man named Vincent Strudwick. He was a fellow physics professor who Dick was constantly at odds with. An ongoing problem for Dick was Tommy dating Strudwick’s daughter, Alissa.
While drunk, Mary revealed to Dick that she previously had an affair with Vincent, long before she met Dick. Remaining completely on brand, he got upset. When Mary complained about being hungover, Dick quipped back, “Well, Mary, that’s just nature’s way of telling you what a tramp you are.”
2 Sensitivity Training
Calling Dick an abusive hardass of a professor would be an incredible understatement. He verbally destroyed them mentally and emotionally on a daily basis, belittling them as often as he possibly could. Eventually, they filed a complaint against him which led to Dick going to sensitivity training.
When that didn’t work, Dick ended up in a disciplinary hearing. He gave a rousing speech in his defense that featured the line, “Where would we be without the agitators of the world to attach the electrodes of knowledge to the nipples of ignorance?” He painted quite the word picture.
1 Unabashedly Ignorant
Being Dick Solomon’s assistant required the patience of a saint. As such, no one could possibly have blamed Nina for quitting and leaving that nonsense for someone else to deal with. That “someone else” turned out to be Harry, which went horribly.
After letting Harry go, Dick was left without anyone to help him. Mary asked Dick if he had finally come to his senses. Dick gave a response that summed up his personality perfectly when he said, “No. I will never come to my senses!”
