5 Best 90s Action Movie Climaxes Ever (& 5 Worst)

The 90s was the decade of the action movie and the climaxes of each film only sought to outdo one another. Some succeeded and others, not so much.

The action film was one of the most popular genres of the 1990s. This was the era of androids and aliens, of muscles, braun and bloodshed, when both men and women became the stars of a number of franchises that raked in the money.

Obviously, a significant appeal of the genre is the pulsing excitement and burst of adrenaline that comes with the climax of the film, when the hero finally manages to vanquish the enemy. The 1990s saw quite a few great action film climaxes, while it also saw quite a few that left much to be desired.

10 Best: Point Break (1991)

In the annals of the action film, there are few films that are quite as outlandish as Point Break. In her long career, director Kathryn Bigelow has shown herself particularly interested in the relationships between men.

This is the essential story of this film, in which an FBI agent and a bank robber enter into a strange and complex relationship. The climax of the film, which involves the two characters diving out of an airplane, has gone down in film history as being one of the best action sequences.

9 Worst: Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)

Given the success of the first film in this franchise, one would have been forgiven for thinking that the sequel would have picked up the mantle and kept going. Unfortunately, this was definitely not the case. Many felt that the film was a ridiculous disaster from the beginning, with some truly strange writing choices and puzzling performances.

What’s more, the climax, rather than tying the film together, ends up falling with a colossal thud, hardly the ending one expects from a film based on a very popular video game.

8 Best: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)

There are some action films characters that have gone on to become icons of science fiction, and one of these is the titular robot of this film, played by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. In this film, he goes from being the villain to being the good guy, and the climax sees him fighting with yet another version of the killer robot.

It’s truly pulse-pounding, and it’s impossible not to feel caught up in the powerful emotions and sensations of this moment, particularly since the titular Terminator ends up taking his own life in an act of heroic sacrifice.

7 Worst: Congo (1995)

Michael Crichton was one of the most respected and successful authors of action novels, and many of the most popular action films of the 1990s were based on his novels (Jurassic Park being a notable example). Some said films were truly great action movies, while many felt that others, such as this one, decidedly were not.

The climax, in which the group of human adventurers encounter the monstrous killer gorillas is, unfortunately, quite ridiculous, robbing the film of the gravitas that Crichton’s novel truly deserved.

6 Best: The Matrix (1999)

There are some science fiction films that are truly a head above the rest, and The Matrix is one such movie. Even today, over 20 years after it came out, it still forces the audience to think about the nature of reality and lived consciousness.

The salvific moment in which Neo manages to resurrect Trinity from death and defeat Agent Smith is no doubt destined to go down as one of the most notable moments in the history of the science fiction action film.

5 Worst: Batman And Robin (1997)

As with so many of the action film franchises of the 1990s, many people, no doubt, thought that Batman and Robin was going to continue on with the success of the earlier entries in the series. Unfortunately, many critics felt that it was a bit of a mess of a film (and one of the worst of the franchise), and this extends right up to the climax, in which Batman faces off with Mr. Freeze.

Fans felt it to be a rather frustrating film, in part because there was so much that could have worked if only it didn’t lean into the ridiculous quite so much.

4 Best: Independence Day (1996)

Independence Day is one of those films that has become almost synonymous with the decade of the 1990s. The image of an alien spaceship utterly destroying the White House is one that has been indelibly burned into the popular consciousness.

The film’s climax is also suitably thrilling, and it’s a textbook example of what an action film can accomplish with the right director, right special effects, and right stars, and Will Smith is absolutely brilliant in this film.

3 Worst: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)

Even longtime fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise probably found their affections strained by this film, in which the titular heroes somehow find themselves magically transported back to Japan.

The tragedy of this is that there was still a lot of potential with these characters, and fans wished they could get a better film and, for that matter, a better climax, particularly since the rebooted films didn’t really do them justice either.

2 Best: Mortal Kombat (1995)

There were probably quite a few people in the 1990s who were skeptical of the idea of a film being made out of the popular (and very gruesome) video game Mortal Kombat. Nevertheless, even the skeptical have to admit that this is one of the better action films to come out of the 1990s.

It sweeps the viewer along from the beginning to the end and, as ridiculous as it can sometimes be, the climax is a fitting end to this rather unusually good film.

1 Worst: True Lies (1994)

The 1990s was a great decade if one happened to be a fan of action-comedy. Year after year, Hollywood studios continued to push out films that were a strange mixture of the adrenaline-infused and, in some cases, the hilarious.

There’s a lot to like about this film but, unfortunately, it does sometimes veer into the realm of the ridiculous, and the climax is no exception. It just feels a bit too on the nose.
