Shrek released in 2001, with Mike Meyers voicing everyone’s favorite ogre. Shrek is something of a grumpy introvert who preferred life in the woods away from those who could intentionally try to hurt him. Along the way, he met a donkey (Eddie Murphy) and a fellow ogre named Fiona (Cameron Diaz). The first movie did so well that four more movies followed.

Aside from Shrek and Fiona, viewers met other DreamWorks characters that filled Shrek’s life with happiness and sorrow. Some were his enemies, while others were enemies who later became friends. Either way, if fans had it up to them, there are a few characters that can stay clear from Shrek and donkey and head for another swamp.

10 Let’s Hang!: Donkey

Donkey and Shrek met in the first movie when Donkey escaped to the swamp after escaping what seemed to be some sort of magical creature swap meet. Shrek was shocked when Donkey wasn’t afraid of him. In fact, Donkey saw Shrek as his protector.

He and Shrek became fast friends, as much as Shrek tried denying it, and are now part of each other’s families. They aged well together, and, due to Donkey’s happy-go-lucky and upbeat nature, anyone would be lucky to call him a friend.

9 GetOut Of Our Swamp: Shrek

As harsh as it sounds to send Shrek to the swamp, that’s exactly where he wants to be. He doesn’t want to hang out with people, answer annoying questions, or do things he doesn’t want to do. He’s comfortable being at home alone.

Shrek especially doesn’t want to hang out with humans because he’s been terrorized and bullied by them for years. Keeping him in the swamp is exactly where he belongs; there would no hard feelings with this one.

8 Let’s Hang!: Gingerbread Man

Shrek fans can hear the Gingerbread Man’s voice just by looking at him. He was so sweet and soft-natured; it’s terrible that anyone could have tortured him!

Shrek met the Gingerbread Man in the first movie when he was being held against his will by Lord Farquaad. It’s thanks to “Gingy” that Shrek was able to defeat most of Lord Farquaad’s men with a massive gingerbread man after meeting the Gingerbread man in the sequel. Because of his fearlessness and love of laughter, Gingerbread Man would be welcome in anyone’s homes. Here’s hoping he makes an appearance in Shrek 5.

7 Get Out Of Our Swamp: Thelonious

Thelonious is an interesting character because he starts out as an antagonist but changes sides to the good guys by the end of Shrek. He was a former henchman of Lord Farquaad and did anything he was asked. By his actions, it seems like Thelonious isn’t the brightest of men, but he’s a big body who could protect Lord Farquaad.

Things change when Lord Farquaad vanishes and Thelonious realizes he’s nicer than he was led on to believe. He ends up attending Shrek and Fiona’s wedding and even becomes friends with the cookie he tortured, Gingy. However, based on his past ability to hurt others, it’s probably best if he’s sent to another swamp

6 Let’s Hang!: The Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs first appear in the first film after being sent to live in the swamp. The three brothers are always together and speak in the cutest accents. But, putting all of that aside, the Three Little Pigs are three friends a person—or ogre, more aptly—would want by their side. They’re loyal, they don’t back down, and they’re strong against their enemies.

These three little piggies wouldn’t enjoy living in or around a swamp. They deserve to hang around those who are going to support and lift them up. They’re also part of what makes Shrek undeniable.

5 Get Out Of Our Swamp: The Pied Piper

The Pied Piper is a subtle nemesis who appears in Shrek and Shrek Forever After. He first appears when he’s exiled to the swamp with the rest of the magical creatures, and he’s seen commanding a group of mice with his flute. Later, in Shrek Forever After, he appears again, but this time he’s not Shrek’s neighbor in the swamp; he’s a bounty hunter who’s looking for Shrek.

With the help of his music, he gets Shrek and his fellow ogres in a trance. The Pied Piper eventually gets fired for not executing his job, but that doesn’t mean Shrek or Fiona would want him living next door. He can be exiled to a different swamp.

4 Let’s Hang!: Fiona & The Kids

Shrek may dislike company and enjoy being alone with his thoughts in the swamp, but Fiona and their kids are different. Fiona has trust issues, but she’s gorgeous, sweet, and enjoys being around others. She met Shrek in the first film and followed him throughout the others thanks to their bond.

Being born in a royal family, Fiona didn’t mind her role as a princess, she just didn’t like the way her parents handled her marriage to Shrek. Regardless of her past, Fiona and their kids would be fun to be around because of how much energy they have.

3 Get Out Of Our Swamp: Prince Charming

In Shrek the Third, Prince Charming believes he’s the rightful king of Far Far Away. If it weren’t for Shrek, he’d be married to Fiona, and the two of them would be ruling the land as husband and wife.

The thing is, Fiona never had feelings for Charming and was always loyal to her husband, but, after Charming and his mother, the Fairy Godmother teamed up, Charming did everything he could to get rid of Shrek. Sadly for him, Shrek came out on top, and Fiona got to spend her life with the real Shrek. Charming, on the other hand, is better off in a swamp. Preferably the slimiest, most vile one we can find.

2 Let’s Hang!: Puss In Boots

5 Characters From Shrek Wed Totally Hang Out With (& 5 Who Need To Get Out Of Our Swamp)

Puss In Boots is another character who was against Shrek at first but soon changed sides. Puss was much more than an adorable cat in boots; he was an incredible fighter and one of the strongest guards Shrek had. Puss also became a star himself and had spinoffs after his time in Shrek. When Puss wasn’t defending Shrek, he was a true ladies’ man and a smooth talker but he’ll always be known as Shrek’s cutest sidekick.

1 Get Out Of Our Swamp: The Witches

The witches first appeared in Shrek and were later sprinkled into the next four films. Most of the witches had green skin and an evil laugh as they flew around and annoyed those they were after. The witches mainly worked with the movies’ antagonists but were later turned “good” in Shrek Forever After. But, thanks to their evil nature, it’s best if Shrek kept these ladies at a distance in another swamp.
