5 Reasons Baby Yoda Is Good (And 5 Why He’ll Go To The Dark Side)

The anticipated second season of The Mandalorian will be debuting on Disney+ shortly which means fans will have the chance to see more of their new favorite Star Wars character Baby Yoda. The young creature quickly stole the show when Mando decides to protect it from the various evil individuals who want it captured.

As popular as the character has become, there are still a lot of questions about Baby Yoda. One of the biggest questions is whether or not this young and powerful Jedi is one of the good guys or if it is destined for the dark side. Let’s take a look at what we know so far.

10 Good: Yoda

Given the timeline of the show, it’s quite obvious to Star Wars fans that Baby Yoda is not actually Yoda. Instead, it seems to be a member of Yoda’s species who all seem to have some inherent skill with The Force. But the connection to Yoda cannot be ignored.

Since Yoda is one of the noblest heroes in the entire Star Wars franchise, it’s hard to imagine that Baby Yoda could be much different. It takes after him in many ways that hopefully it turns out to be as big a hero.

9 Dark Side: Doesn’t Listen

Star Wars fans have already seen the path a Jedi can take from being a cute youngling to becoming an evil member of the Dark Side. Anakin Skywalker seemed to be on the path to being a good Jedi but ultimately turned his back on that way of life and became Darth Vader.

Like Anakin when he was young, Baby Yoda shows a certain rebellious nature. He seems deadest against listening to Mando’s instructions. If he is told to stay, he immediately wants to leave the ship. If he is told not to press buttons on the ship, he does anyway. Is the refusal to listen to Mando an early sign of his Sith future?

8 Good: Heals Greef Karga

Just like the healing Jedi powers that were introduced in Rise of the Skywalker, Baby Yoda shows that he is able to heal people as well. And he uses those incredible powers to save Greef Karga’s life.

Baby Yoda doesn’t know Greef at all so he doesn’t really have any reason to like him, but he sees that he is in trouble and decides to heal him, even though it takes a lot out of him to do it. This selfless act seems to show Baby Yoda’s instincts for being good.

7 Dark Side: Tries To Kill Cara

While Baby Yoda possesses the Jedi’s amazing healing abilities, he also has those more deadly abilities we have seen used by members of the Dark Side. When Mando is having an arm-wrestling match with Cara Dune, Baby Yoda mistakes this as a fight.

Using his Force powers, he chokes Cara until Mando tells him to stop. Though he was apparently helping his friend, we have never seen any good Jedi use the Force choking powers.

6 Good: Saves Mando

The bond between Baby Yoda and Mando is one of the highlights of the show. Mando has risked his life and his way of life countless times to protect this little one. But that is not to say he hasn’t benefitted from the friendship as well.

Baby Yoda clearly has an affection for Mando. During an early episode, Mando is facing off with Mudhorn. Mando is outmatched and looks to be nearly defeated by the creature, but Baby Yoda saves him by using The Force.

5 Dark Side: The Empire Wants Him

When The Client hires Mando to go retrieve this target, it’s clear how special it is to him. The fact that he is an ex-Imperial officer who is clearly still connected to that world means that he probably has nefarious plans for Baby Yoda.

Similarly, when Moff Gideon comes to retrieve Baby Yoda, he says that it means more to him than Mando could possibly know. If the Empire wants him so badly, it’s quite possible they see Baby Yoda as a potential weapon to rebuild their cause.

4 Good: The Empire May Want Him Dead

Despite the fascinating and admiration for Baby Yoda, the communication about whether they want him alive or dead is a bit confused. The Client admits that he wouldn’t really have a problem if Mando had to kill it to retrieve it.

And though Gideon claims it is very important to him, he fires at the group of heroes indiscriminately in a way that could have easily killed Baby Yoda. Maybe they see him as a threat and would rather study his dead body.

3 Dark Side: Unhelpful

While Baby Yoda was a big help to Mando with the Mudhorn, he can rarely be counted on to provide any more help to the heroes. He clearly knows how to tell when they are in danger and his powers could be a real asset, but he usually just stands there doing nothing.

Even when Greef told him to use his powers, Baby Yoda just stared back at him blankly. It could be that he only helped Mando for his own sake and was willing to let the Empire take care of the rest of them when they were no longer needed.

2 Good: Too Cute

The most convincing aspect of Baby Yoda’s obvious goodness is that he just looks too cute to be evil. There is no way something this adorable could ever grow up to be a minion of the Dark Side. Even when Darth Vader was a child, he didn’t hold a candle to how cute Baby Yoda is.

The Sith would probably not even want him as his total cuteness would be completely against the brand they have built for themselves.

1 Dark Side: He Likes Violence

As a young creature, Baby Yoda has been exposed to a lot of violence. He has come along with Mando on various missions and avoided various enemies across the galaxy which has often been quite violent. However, it is a little disturbing how much he seems to enjoy it all.

When IG-11 charges into town and blasts away all the stormtroopers, Baby Yoda is sitting on the front of the speeder, taking it all in. Instead of cowering from all the carnage, he is gleefully laughing like a baby watching a cartoon. Such a reaction to violence surely hints at a darker side.
