Every TV show wants to be considered the cream of the crop, the best of the best. Yet, when it comes to the genre of horror, a good horror show is hard to find, with most suffering from cliched plots, poor acting, or shoddy effects preventing it from earning that coveted title.
However, Netflix appears to have a grasp on the genre, with two series, Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House (considered to be one of the best tv shows based on a book) standing out from the rest. That being said, only one series can be considered the best, which begs the question: what sets one series above the other?
10 Stranger Things: CGI
When it comes to a sci-fi series that delves deep into other worlds, monsters, and superpowered kids, utilizing special effects is key to making he series pop in all the right ways. Of course, it’s easy for any series to fail by CGI as well.
From the terrifying Demogorgon to the mysterious and eerie Upside Down and not to mention the amazing powers of Eleven, the CGI of Stranger Things shines through in the best way possible, transporting viewers to another world and crafting one of the most visually stunning sci-fi shows of the 21st century.
9 Hill House: Practicals
Even though CGI has done a great deal for the modern world of Hollywood, CGI isn’t the only option when crafting sci-fi or horror worlds. Monster films from the ’30s and ’40s in some instances can look far more realistic than most modern blockbusters.
With Hill House, practicals let the ghosts and ghouls of the house creep around in ways that CG never could, letting makeup with the undead residents of Hill House to pop out in more ways than one and make their mark in the realm of horror.
8 Stranger Things: Humorous Moments
Comedy in horror is usually difficult to pull off. It’s always a juggling act of keeping the horror constant while also popping in small bits of comedy to keep the audience calm despite tossing scares in their face every other second.
Because of the idea behind Stranger Things and with it being aimed at both parents and kids alike, the series balances the disturbing and wholesome moments perfectly, with the likes of Dustin and Steve providing enough comic relief for all ages, for both adults and the young ones.
7 Hill House: Emotional Beats
Of course, there are moments when comedy isn’t always the right route to go for some shows. Sometimes, the humor can upset the tense feeling that the series has already established and another feel is needed to balance out the terror.
In some odd moments, emotional beats allow for the break-in horror that many audiences need, an emotion that Hill House provides. In many ways, the emotional beats surprise many viewers and newcomers to the anthology series and show, bringing tears to their eyes instead of screams to their lips.
6 Stranger Things: Monsters
There are many ways that horror can pop up in the crazy amount of movies and shows populating the genre and, of course, the way for horror to pop up is with the creatures. Whether they be hiding under one’s bed or in the closet, monsters can let the horror explode in new creative ways.
Based on a collection of D&D monsters far scarier than the rest, the likes of the horrific Demogorgon to the Cthulu-Esq Mind Flayer that boggles the mind with their overall creepiness and terrifying look that work in more than one way and strikes true fear into audiences’ minds.
5 Hill House: Ghosts
Monsters and creepy crawlers are more than enough to horrify and scare viewers in more ways than one and yet, there can be things far more frightening than monsters: ghosts. Ghosts, sometimes apparitions of lost loved ones, can drive fear into anyone’s heart.
The ghosts that move about the halls of Hill House, some as old as the house itself, others remnants of victims the house stole, range in level of terror and yet, each allows a sense of fear to show, from Poppy Hill to the Bent-Neck Lady.
4 Stranger Things: Story
In the state that Hollywood is in today, originality is difficult to come by. True, a lot of stories can end up being somewhat new or different from the rest of the plethora of stories Hollywood has to offer but eventually, even the new ideas can blend together with others.
Luckily, Stranger Things offers a blend of old and new, with the nostalgia of the ’80s blending well with a tight story packed with some great character duos, memorable scenes, and of course, enough scares to keep anyone on edge.
3 Hill House: Plot Twists
A show or movie without twists or turns isn’t a very exciting series. The film or series needs a great plot twist, with a lot of horror movies having some of the best and few times the worst plot twists to move the plot along and surprise the viewers and, hopefully, blow their minds.
Hill House has a couple of great twists that elevate the series above many others. From the identity of the Bent-Neck Lady to the secret of the red room, the twists, surprises, and shocks are boundless in Hill House and never ceases to amaze.
2 Stranger Things: Child Actors
It goes without saying that acting, in general, is already difficult but to find a child actor whose at least decent? That’s even more difficult. Not to say kids can’t act, but only a select few can actually deliver worthwhile scenes that hit.
Stranger Things somehow managed to scoop up some of the best child actors out there. Whether it be Mike, Dustin, Will, Lucas, or Millie Bobby Brown as the now-iconic Eleven (for which she was nominated an Emmy for), the kid’s actors nail their roles perfectly.
1 Hill House: Scares
No horror series can truly work without the scares. It’s common knowledge that everyone knows and recognizes, with frights and scares quite literally sometimes holding the story and series together and praying it succeeds to an amazing and phenomenal effect.
Of course, Hill House doesn’t have much to worry about. With some of the scariest scenes on tv that still give audiences nightmares, full of hidden ghosts and slow buildups with amazing payoffs complemented by emotional scenes that sell the series for many and putting at the top of many a horror fans list with the horrors it delivers.
