Michael Carter’s standout rookie season didn’t deter the Jets from forming a two-headed monster in their backfield during the 2022 NFL draft.

New York surprised many by selecting Iowa State’s Breece Hall with the 36th pick. Running back didn’t jump off the page as a need for the Jets after what Carter accomplished as a neophyte, but Joe Douglas deemed Hall dynamic enough to pursue him in an effort to give Zach Wilson a new playmaker to utilize.

Let’s take a closer look at what Hall brings to the Big Apple with seven things to know.

Strong NFL bloodlines

Playing running back is in Hall’s blood. Hall’s cousin is three-time Super Bowl champion Roger Craig. The four-time pro bowler was the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards and register 1,000 receiving yards in the same season. Naturally, Hall is a do-it-all running back with a similar dual-threat skill set.

NFL ties in the household

Craig wasn’t the only NFL player Hall grew up around. His stepfather was Jeff Smith, who was a 10th round pick of the Chiefs in the 1985 NFL draft and spent four years as a backup running back with Kansas City and the Buccaneers. Hall wore No. 28 at Iowa State to honor his stepfather. That tradition won’t continue with the Jets, as Curtis Martin’s No. 28 is retired by the team.

Record setter

Just how good was Hall at Iowa State? He didn’t fumble the ball during his time with the Cyclones and set an FBS record by rushing for at least one touchdown in 24 straight games. That streak will carry over to the NFL when Hall takes the field for the Jets in Week 1.

Willing workhorse

Hall was the focal point of Iowa State’s offense and he embraced the heavy workload that came along with that. The 5-foot-11, 217-pound Hall paced all Division I running backs — FBS and FCS — with 800 offensive touches over the last three seasons and 591 over the last two.

Not lacking confidence

Confidence seems to be a theme in the Jets’ 2022 draft class. Hall is among those who has the utmost faith in his ability, recently talking up what he can do with the ball in his hands in an interview with Big 12 Sirius XM radio.

“What I’m able to do with the ball in my hands is unmatched by every other running back in this class,” Hall said. “As much of an impact as I can make on the field, I’m going make off the field. You’re going get the best of both worlds, on the field and in the community. You’re going get a great person and player.”

Kansas isn’t known as a high school football hotbed, but Hall was still able to make a name for himself at Northwest High School in Wichita. 247Sports ranked Hall as the seventh-best running back in the class of 2019 and pegged him as a four-star prospect. Hall received nearly 20 offers from the likes of Michigan, Ole Miss and Tennessee, but decided to play a bit closer to home with his commitment to Iowa State.

Campbell sees consistency

Matt Campbell has coached numerous top-end talents during his time at Iowa State. Hall ranks among the best, though, and his ability to consistently seize the moment is a big reason why, according to his old head coach.

“To me, the word is consistency for Breece,” Campbell said in November, per 247Sports. “There’s a real sense of professionalism and consistency that he brings to how he attacks the sport. And that part has allowed our team to really be able to use him in the most critical moments. You talk scoring, those are critical moments. And Breece has always been ready for the moment.”
