It consistently ranks among the most-watched series in the streamer and receives rave reviews for its heartfelt and honest depiction of teenage sexuality. In short, it is one of the most popular shows currently airing on Netflix.

However, not everyone’s an absolute fan of the show. In fact, some fans have divisive and even outright unpopular takes on Sex Education, and they take to Reddit to express them. Not every opinion is categorically negative, but they are controversial, and most fans disagree with them.

9 Isaac Did The Right Thing Deleting Otis’ Message

Most fans despised season two’s ending, where Isaac listened to and deleted Otis’ love confession to Maeve. Everyone expected some complications for Otis and Maeve’s blossoming romance, but hardly anyone expected Isaac would stoop so low.

However, some fans didn’t mind, and a few even agreed with his actions. Reddit user Midnightsummertime thinks Isaac did a good thing in deleting the message. “I’d rather have Otis tell Maeve he loves her in person rather (than) through a voice message.” Otis does get to confess his love in person, but Isaac’s actions were still wrong. He invaded Maeve’s privacy, even if he wanted to protect her. Luckily, season three has him confessing his actions to her.

8 Lily And Ola’s Relationship Felt Forced

Lily is one of Sex Education’s best supporting characters. She is like a breath of fresh air with her colorful and unique outlook on life. For her part, Ola might’ve been unpopular when she was dating Otis, but once she got together with Lily, fans got to see another side to her.

Still, some fans had issues with the way they got together. For example, Redditor Mariasolvv thinks their relationship felt “very forced.” Two more users agreed with her, saying the two becoming a couple felt “abrupt.” However, the users are ignoring Lily and Ola’s previous connection. They were friends before becoming a couple, meaning they knew each other pretty well and maybe already loved each other before making things official.

7 Otis Spoke The Truth During His Drunken Speech

Most fans agree that Otis hit a low point during his party in season two. He gets drunk and makes a public speech, insulting and humiliating both Ola and Maeve. He then hooks up with Ruby, the perfect ending to his night of selfish recklessness.

Even so, a few Reddit users agree with the things he said. One Reddit user thinks that, while Otis’ speech was “called for,” he “actually hit it pretty spot on with what he said.” However, Otis never gave Maeve any indication of his feelings, so she had no way of knowing he liked her. Furthermore, Maeve is one of the least selfish people in the show, always going out of her way to protect and care for those she loves. Otis should’ve known better.

6 Jackson Is Very Unlikable

Sex Education has plenty of likable characters, and most fans agree that Jackson is one of them. He is a clever twist on the traditional “jock” character, a sensitive and compelling character with a layered character arc. The show allows him more dynamism than other popular jocks, resulting in a refreshingly intriguing character.

Reddit user overkillzx23 doesn’t agree with most fans, though. The user thinks Jackson “is really arrogant and has this attitude that it’s all about him and his happiness.” The Redditor also says that while season two did an okay job developing his character, “there was never a reason for him to be likable.” To each their own, but Jackson is one of the show’s most relatable characters, so calling him “unlikeable” is a reach.

5 Eric Is A Bad Friend To Otis

The friendship between Otis and Adam is one of the show’s strongest assets. They constantly support each other, even if they sometimes tease each other. After all, Eric is one of Sex Education’s funniest characters, and much of his humor comes at Otis’ expense. However, there’s still love between them, and the show makes it clear.

However, not every viewer loves their friendship. Reddit user DriftingJDM believes Eric is a bad friend to Otis. She points to the party scene when Eric “watches Otis humiliate himself not just with the speech but the whole night in general.” Sure, Eric could’ve done more to stop Otis from rambling in front of his guests, but one moment at a party doesn’t erase years of friendship. Season three shows that Eric is willing to abandon everything and be there for Otis during the toughest times, proving their friendship is the real deal.

4 Aimee Is Not An Interesting Character

Aimee Gibbs is a gift to television. She’s sweet, innocent, and hilarious, adding a much-needed dose of wholesomeness to the show. Her arc in season two is compelling and timely, and her friendship with Maeve is a highlight of every episode.

It might seem like no one could dislike Aimee; alas, there’s always someone. Redditor Obessoverfiction doesn’t care for Aimee. “I just never find that ‘sweet dumb’ personality type interesting or funny.” The user is entitled to their opinion, but reducing Aimee to a “‘sweet dumb’ personality type” shows a lack of understanding about the character. Aimee has gone through so much and is dealing with severe trauma following her assault in season two. And still, she keeps going and growing, learning more about herself and the world every day. Now, that’s interesting.

3 Maeve Is Not A Good Person

Maeve Wiley is the most brilliant character in Sex Education. She’s sarcastic, independent, unyielding, ambitious, and inspiring. In other words, she’s one of the best characters in any television show currently airing, a young girl forced to deal with situations that no teenager should have to handle.

Furthermore, the show goes out of its way to show she’s a caring person, constantly looking out for others. Sorry to DJ-Wallaby, but they’re objectively wrong on this one.

2 Maeve And Aimee’s Friendship Is Underdeveloped

As previously mentioned, Maeve and Aimme’s friendship is one of the sweetest parts of the show. They support each other through everything and go out of their way to encourage each other. Maeve helped Aimee through her assault trauma, and Aimee gave Maeve the push she needed to go to America. They bring out the best in each other, resulting in a balanced and wholesome connection.

Most fans love them together, but Reddit user phantom_avenger isn’t one of them. In the user’s opinion, their friendship is underdeveloped. “We don’t know why they’re friends or what made them become close.” The series doesn’t show the beginning of their connection, but it doesn’t need to anyway; not everything needs an origin story. Besides, the writers and actresses do a brilliant job exploring Maeve and Aimee’s dynamic without needing a detailed introduction.

1 Otis And Maeve Lack Passion In Season 3

Will-they-won’t-they relationships are always at risk of becoming tiresome. If it takes too long for the characters to get together, fans might become anxious or annoyed. So far, Otis and Maeve’s relationship has avoided this fate, but season four might be the breaking point for many fans. Season three complicated things further by introducing the fan-favorite ship of Otis and Ruby, adding more division to the fandom.

Still, many fans keep believing that “Motis” are endgame.
