9 Video Games With Movie-Worthy Plots

With the recent successes of Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and even Mortal Kombat, it would appear that video game movies are making their way out of the dark ages. While these flicks’ spectacle and special effects might be worth the price of admission, their scripts really aren’t identical to the source material. But there are many games whose scripts would make for excellent films.

The biggest problem adapting games to screen versions is typically the script, but these games already come equipped with movie-ready material.

9 The Legend Of Zelda

Granted, some creative liberty will have to be taken, but the epic saga of Link’s quest to save Princess Zelda and the fate of Hyrule is a tale as old as time. A Zelda film or TV series has been desired for years, and filmmakers essentially have their choice of plot.

Want something simple and maybe animated? Go with the original. Want something more complex and magical? Use Ocarina of Time. Want something dark and edgy? Twilight Princess is the way to go. The possibilities are all certainly there.

8 Assassin’s Creed (Ezio’s Games)

The film version of Assassin’s Creed should have gone off without a hitch. It had the right look and a few good concepts; there was only one major problem. Where on earth was Ezio? He practically has the perfect AC trilogy.

If 20th Century Fox had pulled directly from the source material instead of trying their own take on the lore into a movie, it might have been a success. It’s missed opportunity if there ever was one.

7 Dead Space

Although it certainly takes inspiration from other sci-fi horror flicks like Alien and Event Horizon, a live-action Dead Space film could be a more gruesome and gory alternative to those movies that spawned it. Provided the studio in charge handled the material correctly.

This interstellar nightmare would be so easy for someone like Guillermo Del Toro or Blumhouse to pick up and turn into an absolute Saw-level horror show. It all depends on who’s in charge and how well they can stick to the script.

6 Night In The Woods

How does this game not lend itself over to a full-length animated feature? Although its material is a bit more adult than its design might suggest, a film version would draw in quite a large audience.

Night In The Woods is an amalgamation of elements that more than deserve an adaptation outside a video game. Its plot is like something out of Stephen King’s Castle Rock setting, its look and characters would be at home in Zootopia or Adventure Time, and its more grown-up themes would definitely make for a remarkable film.

5 Dragon Age

While it would be very easy to throw Mass Effect onto the list, Dragon Age could provide the biggest fantasy epic to hit screens since Lord of The Rings. Given how the game is played and how many branching pathways and sidequests there are, some serious control would be required.

That all being said, this could be one of the biggest fantasy films if given the right direction. Not only that, but it could also open the door for a star-studded cast to play some of the series’s best and beloved characters.

4 Horizon: Zero Dawn

The world of Horizon: Zero Dawn is so incredibly rich with lore and mechanical monsters that a film adaptation would be nothing short of amazing. The game already plays out like a Viking-esque Mad Max with more robot dinosaurs; why not go all the way?

Given the right combination of performances and direction, an adaptation of Aloy’s story arc would be an incredible adventure, especially if it carried the epic scope and scale of the PS4 classic.

3 Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Fantasy and horror are two film genres that don’t overlap as much as they should, but an adaptation of this Viking-inspired descent into madness would remedy that. It wouldn’t be easy, but a film recreation of Senua’s sacrifice would be a work of psychological horror genius.

The backbone of the game’s plot explores the protagonist’s pain after the death of her lover, a subject that’s already perfect for the horror genre. Throw in some eldritch horrors and stunning swordplay, and it could be a hit.

2 Batman: Arkham Asylum

Robert Pattinson might already have the reigns on the Caped Crusader with The Batman, but why on earth was Arkham Asylum not given the full-fledged live-action treatment? It essentially combines every bit of the Bat’s best features.

There are notes of the Burton version, the animated series, and even a sprinkling of the Nolanverse here and there, but all while staying remarkably accurate to the comics. It was the Batman game everyone wanted, but it could have been the movie they wanted as well.

1 God Of War

Although the original series would have made for an excellent mythological masterpiece a la Clash of the Titans, the PS4 remake/reboot is a cinematic experience from start to finish.

Imagine the masterpiece that could be created if a director uses Santa Monica’s script and plot with a live-action adaptation of Kratos and Atreus’s journey to the mountain? The results would be nothing short of Oscar-worthy.
