A Surprise Nintendo Direct Is Coming This Week According To Leak

A new leak has emerged suggesting that a Nintendo Direct will be happening later this week, although details regarding the content of said presentation are currently unavailable. The most recent Nintendo Direct was nearly two months ago, when Nintendo revealed Pokemon Sword & Shield, the first mainline Pokemon titles to arrive on Switch.

Since then, Nintendo has been relatively quiet regarding large announcements as the company gears up for a future without Reggie Fils-Aime, CEO of Nintendo America, who will be retiring on April 15 this month. The biggest presentation since then was likely the Nindies Showcase for Spring that occurred a few weeks ago, revealing a new Legend of Zelda x Necrodancer crossover alongside some other major announcements. The industry is also only a few short months away from E3 2019, one of the most important conferences of the year and a convergence point for big reveals from many different companies, even those that aren’t actually giving presentations on location.

According to GamingIntel, a reputable source in the industry, another Nintendo Direct livestream is apparently scheduled for later this week on Thursday, April 11. The surprise Nintendo Direct will contain the usual Switch and 3DS-related news that fans have come to expect, but outside of that fairly easy assumption, not much is known about the content of the presentation. That hasn’t stopped fans from speculating, though, and the presentation’s close proximity to Fils-Aime’s retirement date suggests that he could be involved in some way for an on-screen send-off.

Beyond that, there’s still plenty of news fans already know about that could make up the bulk of the surprise Nintendo Direct. Persona 5’s Joker DLC fighter is going to release for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate soon, and coupled with an upcoming announcement from Atlus about Persona 5 S later this month, a Nintendo Direct could be the perfect time to reveal further plans for the Phantom Thieves on Switch. A recent Best Buy leak also unveiled the existence of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Metroid Prime Trilogy for Switch, and if those were already in the company’s inventory system, it’s possible they’re close enough to a release that Nintendo could structure a presentation around them. Finally, there’s also a chance Pokemon Sword & Shield will make up the bulk of the presentation, as many details about the world of Galar have yet to be uncovered.

Nintendo usually reveals the time and date of its livestreams pretty close to when they actually occur, so this rumor won’t be cemented until the next few days if it’s true. Still, the timing of the surprise Nintendo Direct makes a lot of sense, and it would be an appropriate platform to give Nintendo fans one last chance to see Reggie Fils-Aime in all his internet meme-generating glory before he takes a well-deserved step back from the spotlight in a week.
