Remakes of Advance Wars’ first two games were announced at Nintendo’s E3 presentation. Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp will contain both the original Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. The games have been completely remade for the Nintendo Switch’s new hardware. There will also be a new multiplayer mode, available at any point in the story.

The original Advance Wars games were turn-based strategy titles for the Game Boy Advance. It is a sequel series to the Famicom War games, exclusive to Japan. Advance Wars was also not meant to leave Japan, but the games were eventually adapted for Western audiences. While never a major moneymaker for Nintendo, it does have a dedicated fanbase. The last entry in the franchise was Advance Wars: Days of Ruin for the Nintendo DS, released in 2008.

Advance Wars 1+ 2 Re-Boot Camp will be released on December 3rd for the Nintendo Switch, according to the website. The gameplay is tactics-based, with players make decisions in battle depending on terrain, weather, and enemy statuses. Players will have to keep track of various types of units and capture towns and bases to complete objectives. There are also various abilities that Commanding Officers can use, but enemy Commanding Officers have access to skills of their own. It’s similar to fellow Nintendo franchise Fire Emblem, but with an emphasis on technology and military rather than fantasy.

The game will also feature a new Multiplayer Versus Mode. Up to four players can choose their Commanding Officers and face off from a selection of maps. Battles can be customized with a variety of options, such as weather effects. It is possible that this mode will support online play, but there has been no official announcement.

As this is Advance Wars’ first reappearance in over a decade, fans are sure to be excited over the return of Andy, Sami, and Max. But this is also a chance for newcomers to experience one of Nintendo’s quirkiest and most underrated titles for the first time. While admittedly not a series that appeals to everyone, Advance Wars offers delightful strategy and tactics gameplay without some of Fire Emblem’s less-beloved features. The new updated visuals are both charmingly simplistic but wonderfully detailed. It also proves that Nintendo is unafraid to return to their supposedly forgotten franchises and reintroduce them to modern audiences. While it may be just a remake, Re-Boot Camp could signal a whole new experience is in the series’ future.

Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp will release on December 3rd for Nintendo Switch.
