After the Fall Review A Fantastic Multiplayer Zombie VR Experience

After the Fall, which was developed by Vertigo Studios and published by Vertigo Games, is a danger-ridden FPS VR survival game full of undead creatures called Snowbreed. After the Fall allows for up to four players on multiple VR platforms to join in the fight and complete harvest runs. Players can also face off in a four-on-four team battle or play in a private match with friends or a team of AIs.

The setting in After the Fall is a post-apocalyptic frozen tundra where players are part of a small group of survivors that harvest the Snowbreed. Each Harvest run will give players points to buy weapons, modifiers, and attachments, as well as secondary items within the levels like health injections or pipe bombs. Players can obtain or upgrade their guns in the central HUB. The HUB works as a lobby for players in between runs and has other online players in it that can be invited to join a game.

After the Fall plays very similarly to the original Left 4 Dead, with players moving through each level by killing enemies and reaching saferooms. Every level ends with a harvest which sends a horde of Snowbreed at the players. The horde includes special Snowbreed like the Juggernaut, which has full body armor and can instantly kill any player it gets a hold of. Juggernauts move slow, so as long as players keep moving, they can get away from it. Each special Snowbreed has weaknesses to exploit in that fashion, making headiness under pressure a must.

After the Fall Review A Fantastic Multiplayer Zombie VR Experience

Like Back 4 Blood, the main missions in After the Fall are meant to slowly introduce players to each new area. They open up one at a time, but once all five areas have been completed, players are free to do any run they choose. Multiplayer for harvest runs and team battles is available as soon as the tutorial is complete. The tutorial shows players how to use their weapons and interact with the environment, but it’s almost unnecessary as the controls are very intuitive.

After the Fall allows for players to sit or stand while playing, and there are fluid and teleport movement options for those that are prone to motion sickness. Sitting works well for most of the game, but players will likely still need to stand up to reach certain objects like the face scanners that let them into saferooms. However, After the Fall is well-optimized for player comfort.

The downside to After the Fall is that it’s very repetitive. Other than the number of Snowbreed and the overall difficulty of the level, there’s no difference in setting or gameplay. Each section looks very similar, and after encountering the limited number of special Snowbreed, there’s nothing new to experience. There’s also a slight issue with the map where players may find themselves getting stuck inside doors or walls, but it’s easily fixed if players physically back up in real life.

Although After the Fall can be repetitive, it shines in its multiplayer capabilities and cross-platform options. Players can connect with their friends in VR to take out hordes of Snowbreed and challenge their skills against enemies like the Smasher, a massive Snowbreed monster with ice armor and a hammer-like arm. After the Fall is reminiscent of Left 4 Dead or Back 4 Blood’s gameplay, but with an added level of immersion in VR that makes it a thrilling zombie-fighter experience.
