Alex Ross Pens First Graphic Novel With Fantastic Four Full Circle

The 2020s continue to be a promising decade for Marvel, the Fantastic Four, and Alex Ross’ stunning art. Although Ross is known for his artwork, he just revealed that he’s writing his first graphic novel, a brand new story for Marvel’s First Family called Fantastic Four: Full Circle. Fans can read this new story featuring Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm on August 2, 2022.

Alex Ross started his superhero art career when he joined forces with Kurt Busiek to illustrate 1994’s Marvels. The series was an instant classic and presented some of the Marvel Universe’s best images to date. Only two years later, Ross moved to DC Comics, when he illustrated and co-wrote Kingdom Come with Mark Waid. Both of these ’90s comics produced reenergized pictures for all of these characters that felt familiar, yet they were more lifelike than they had ever been. Ross uses elements from previous comics that readers’ minds instantly associate with the icons he draws, making him one of the best artists, if not the best, in the superhero industry. Aside from films, Alex Ross’ art is the most realistic these Marvel and DC characters come.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle was first announced by comicbook.com and will be the first graphic novel Ross has written on his own. The book goes on sale August 2, 2022 and will be presented in a larger format than most Marvel publications. It is the first in the MarvelArts series, a collaboration between Marvel Comics and Abrams ComicArts. The story focuses on Marvel’s First Family traveling to the Negative Zone after the Baxter Building is attacked by parasites.

Ross channels his passion for the Fantastic Four and Jack Kirby like never before in his dialogue and art. Throughout the years, Ross has always made it a point to mention classic artists that inspire him, like Jack Kirby—the Fantastic Four’s co-creator and original artist. To this day, Kirby is still the primary influence on any story featuring Marvel’s cosmic side. Ross’ cover for the story already shows that Fantastic Four: Full Circle pays homage to the “King of Comics” with new line-work and colorful art. The story will retell the First Family’s origins like never before, and Alex Ross’ posts are evidence of this.

Many movie fans are skeptical about the Fantastic Four due to every film’s highly debated quality. However, none of those movies feature much of the Fantastic Four’s cosmic adventures. Reed Richards and his teammates first encounter the greatest space villains in superhero comics. From the Skrulls to Galactus, Fantastic Four’s villains are probably the most iconic space explorers in Marvel or DC Comics. Both Jack Kirby and Alex Ross have handled this phenomenally with their work. There is a good chance readers will see several familiar faces in Ross’ new tale.

In less than a year, fans will get to see Alex Ross’ writing in action for the first time since Kingdom Come. Fantastic Four: Full Circle already has beautiful art, and if Ross’ previous works indicate how his next story will turn out, fans have every right to be excited. Marvel Comics’ new Fantastic Four graphic novel appears to be an instant classic in the works.
