Alexa Smart Speakers & Fire TV Devices Can Now Do More When Paired

Amazon has rolled out a new set of hands-free features for Amazon Fire TV’s when paired with an Alexa-enabled device, such as an Echo speaker. The two components of Amazon’s family of connected devices already had solid functionality when paired together. With this latest update, the compatibility and support continues to improve.

There are several different versions of both the Amazon Fire TV and Amazon’s various Alexa-enabled devices. Streaming TV devices include the Amazon Fire TV Stick, or the more expensive Amazon Fire TV Cube. As for Alexa devices, Amazon has built the handy voice assistant into a plethora of smart products, though the main devices include the Echo, Echo Dot, and Echo Show.

When paired together, which is now easier with Amazon’s automatic pairing feature, users can request Alexa to show visual experiences on their Amazon Fire TV’s. For example, asking Alexa to “show me my calendar,” will pull up personal calendars on the display that someone’s Fire TV is connected to. The same goes for commands like “show me the weather,” “show me my shopping list,” or even “show me the traffic downtown.” If there’s also a connected smart camera in the home, users can ask Alexa to show them that specific feed, then view it on the Fire TV. This “show me” experience works with any paired Alexa device, except the Echo Show or Spot, since those products already have screens.

Other New Fire TV & Alexa Device Improvements

There are a few other neat features included in this fresh update from Amazon. Chief among them is improved functionality when it comes to selecting content hands-free. Using an Alexa device to navigate a Fire TV has been made easier thanks to commands like “Alexa, find comedies,” which then bring up a list of different comedies. To pick specific content from that list, a command like “Alexa, select #4” will suffice. Then, to preview that specific video, users can ask Alexa to “play the trailer.”

Other navigation perks include the ability to ask Alexa to “show me my watchlist” or return to the home screen with a command like “Alexa, go home.” Once again, this experience will not work on Echo Show or Echo Spot devices, since they will just display the content on their own screen. Otherwise, those invested in the Amazon ecosystem will be free to stream with just their voice.

Though products like the Amazon Fire TV already had some of this functionality as an all-in-one device, rolling out these features for people who have an Alexa-Fire TV combo greatly expands the reach of these more advanced experiences. Just imagine how easy it would be to throw on a re-run of a favorite show without even needing to pick up a remote. After all, there’s a decent chance that remote is already lost, so it is good that Amazon has a pretty simple hands-free solution.
