Alien Vs Predator Almost Cast RoboCops Peter Weller As Yutani

Alien Vs Predator originally cast another icon of ‘80s sci-fi in Robocop’s Peter Weller, as a pivotal figure from the Alien franchise. Released in 2004, Paul WS Anderson’s Alien Vs Predator was one of the most anticipated sci-fi faceoffs in horror history. Since the original Alien was released in 1979, the Xenomorph had made a name for itself as one of the most formidable screen monsters of all time.

Meanwhile, the Predator had bested Arnold Schwarzenegger in his first movie outing and cut a bloody swathe through LA in Predator 2. Neither monster had been seen onscreen in years when AvP arrived, and recent Alien releases had proven underwhelming at best for the franchise faithful. Luckily, only a year after Freddy Vs Jason’s success, Alien Vs Predator arrived to combine the two infamous killers in one bloodbath that could save the Alien series and revive the dormant Predator franchise.

Or not. Alien Vs Predator was a big disappointment to many, with the sanitized PG-13 horror receiving some of the worst reviews of either franchise. Critics complained about a lack of gore and solid scares, as well as plodding pacing that wasted almost an hour on story setup. Unfortunately, however, Anderson actually cut a potentially fun role from an icon of ‘80s sci-f because he was worried about the story growing too sprawling. According to an Ain’t It Cool article, an early version of Alien Vs Predator featured a part for Peter Weller as John Yutani. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because the character is the business partner of Lance Henriksen’s Weyland, with the pair’s corporation eventually becoming the Alien franchise villains of the far future.

In the original draft, the duplicitous Yutani wants Weyland to perish on the movie’s Antarctic dig and sent an assassin to make sure that happened (as he is unaware there are plenty of alien threats lurking there to do the job for free). The character was later cut from the script to keep the story streamlined, thus denying viewers a chance to see the other half of the people behind the infamous corporation onscreen. It is understandable Anderson wanted the story to be easier to follow, but the reasoning is dispiriting given how many unnecessary subplots and characters the finished film ended up featuring.

Much like the Predator’s climactic self-sacrifice shouldn’t have been deleted from Alien Vs Predator, this appearance from Weller would have put a recognizable face to the big-picture villains of the franchise while also providing a fun cameo. This was not the last time the AvP series attempted to furnish an appearance from sci-fi royalty, with cameos from Bill Paxton and Michael Biehn being planned for 2007’s sequel Requiem. To be fair to the sequel, these appearances were at least not cut for time, an inexplicable excuse considering how punishingly slow the setup of Alien Vs Predator’s limited action is.
