Sigourney Weaver is generally regarded as the Queen of Sci-Fi, and that’s because of her breakthrough role as Ellen Ripley in the long-lasting Alien film franchise. Ellen Ripley continues to battle Princess Leia for the most popular female sci-fi character of all time, and the debate will rage without end for years to come. In the meantime, here’s 10 amazing facts that nobody told you about Ripley: from her birthday to her education, and the events leading up to Alien.

10 She Was Originally Written As A Male

According to early Alien story drafts, Ripley was written as a male character, but not on purpose. In fact, when the time came to cast Sigourney Weaver in the role, few thought twice about it, given the character’s cross-gender appeal.

In truth, Ripley could have been played by a man or a woman without losing anything, but Sigourney Weaver’s dazzling performance made Ripley a feminist icon, without having to exercise feminist ideals. The character is adored and respected by both male and female fans for her down-to-earth attitude and charisma.

9 Her Middle Name

It took long enough for audiences to figure out Ripley’s first name, which she didn’t officially reveal until a deleted scene from the Director’s Cut of Aliens. After revealing her first name as “Ellen,” audiences felt the mystery was over.

What about her middle name, though? Most fans hadn’t even bothered to think of it, but for the truly obsessive out there, it might please you to know that her middle name is “Louise.”

8 Height & Weight

Weyland-Yutani’s official dossier on Ripley reveals her height as 5’7″, with a weight of 111 lbs. That’s a far cry from actress Sigourney Weaver’s real-life height of 5’9″.

Still, it does little to detract from Ripley’s on-screen presence, allowing her to stand toe-to-toe with the tallest of the bunch, and usually emerge at the top.

7 She Wasn’t Born On Earth

Many believe that Ripley is a homegrown human, but she was actually born on an outer world colony funded by the United Americas. According to records, her birth date was 06/10/03, which seems to clash with several sources claiming her birth date was January 7, 2092.

The name of the colony was known as Olympia, which was constructed on Luna, otherwise commonly known as Earth’s moon. This may help explain her comment at the end of Alien: Resurrection when the cloned Ripley says “I’m a stranger here, myself.”

6 Her Education

Weyland-Yutani’s official dossier on Ripley reveals that she wasn’t just an excellent flight officer – she was also a gifted student. She received a Masters degree in Engineering from the New York Aeronautics University, which helped jump-start her career.

She also attended Boya Private School, where she excelled at the top of her class, as well as a stint at Brea-Olinda Private School in Los Angeles. Ironically, a real Brea-Olinda school actually exists in California, with 1,788 students (avg.) teaching grades 9-12.

5 She Had A Long Flight History

Ripley’s first assignment wasn’t the Nostromo. Rather, she’d flown on quite a few ships before landing her unfortunate position which led to a face-to-face run-in with the xenomorph menace.

She served on the U.S.C.S. Youngblood Hawke, the U.S.C.S. Pleshette, and as co-pilot on the US Merchant Marine vessel Zelanzy, before climbing the ranks.

4 Her Potential Was Limitless

Weyland-Yutani’s psych evaluation and index tests indicated that Ripley had the potential to be one of the absolute best-of-the-best officers in service. Their Torin brain-scan analysis even went so far as to claim that she could have risen to an operating officer in the flagship fleet, with a performance potential of 9.5.

Sadly, she wouldn’t get the chance, given her unfortunate run-in with the xenomorph menace on LV-426. It remains yet another tragic element of her troubled history.

3 She Wouldn’t Give Up Her Pregnancy

Weyland-Yutani records indicate that she violated a company bylaw known as 87-B, which prohibited her from allowing a natural pregnancy to come to term during a layover between hauls.

Rather than submit, Ripley openly defied it to give birth to her daughter Amanda, putting her at odds with the company. In the end, the company struck a deal with her to fulfill a mutually agreed upon contractual obligation which would allow her to keep her job.

2 She Took The Nostromo Contract For Her Daughter

Ripley was so keen on motherhood that she decided to renegotiate her contract with Weyland-Yutani in order to spend more time with her daughter, Amanda. Under bylaw 17-G, Ripley wanted to take two leaves of absence before working on the Nostromo.

The company went through heavy negotiations with her lawyers until a compromise was struck which would see her make one run on the Nostromo, before taking a leave of absence. The company’s Dylan-Donovan Curve registered a high amount of guilt over Ripley’s lack of contact with Amanda, a fact proven when she later learned her daughter had died of old age after she promised to come home in time for her 11th birthday.

1 Amanda’s Photo Connection

A key deleted scene from Aliens featured Ripley inquiring with Burke as to the fate of her daughter Amanda, who she’d not seen in 57 years. Fearing the worst, Ripley got just that when Burke revealed she had died of old age.

The photo Ripley holds is actually Sigourney Weaver’s real-life mother Elizabeth Inglis, which fully explains the physical similarities between the two. It’s a nice nod to continuity and provides a plausible, realistic connection between the characters.
