1 All 61 Movies & TV Shows Disney Just Announced

Disney Investor Day 2020 yielded some surprising announcements about upcoming movies and television shows. Here’s a rundown of all the new releases.

It’s typical for new releases to be announced as part of the annual Disney Investor Day – and there certainly were a lot across main Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and more. The 2020 event exceeded all expectations, with an unprecedented number of new projects being unveiled for 2021 and beyond, primarily because Disney wasn’t able to utilize Comic-Con and Star Wars Celebration this time.

2020 has been a difficult year for the big Hollywood studios, and Disney has been no exception. While the company has weathered the troubles brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic better than most, it still faced profits that were far lower than projected due to the limited launch of the live-action Mulan film. Yet the company has also had its successes, with the Star Wars tie-in The Mandalorian continuing to be a critical and commercial success and Marvel Comics fans eagerly anticipating the first wave of Phase 4 television tie-ins like WandaVision.

It was expected that Disney Investor Day 2020 would be heavily focused on new Star Wars and Marvel Comics offerings. Variety was the word of the day, however, and the event saw a number of big announcements for both movies and television series and some surprises outside the many shared universes curated by Disney. Here is the quick rundown of every new film and television project announced during the event.

61. Only Murders In The Building

Little is known about this new comedy series, which Disney is producing for Hulu, beyond its cast. With that caveat, Only Murders in the Building does have an outstanding cast lined up, including comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, as well as Selena Gomez. All three actors are also executive producers on the show, which began filming in New York City early in December 2020.

60. The Dropout

Kate McKinnon is best known for her work as a comedian on Saturday Night Live, but she’ll be playing a dramatic lead in a new Hulu series. Based on the ABC podcast of the same name, The Dropout will star McKinnon as Elizabeth Holmes, the infamous CEO and alleged con artist whose company made billions selling faulty medical technology. McKinnon is also an executive producer on the series.

59. Dopesick

Star Wars fans may be thrilled that Ahsoka is getting her own show, but that wasn’t the only new series featuring Rosario Dawson to be announced at Disney Investor Day 2020. Dawson will also be appearing with Michael Keaton and Peter Sarsgaard in a new Hulu drama called Dopesick. Based on the book of the same name by Beth Macy, Dopesick will offer “an ambitious, harrowing, and compelling look into the epicenter of America’s struggle with opioid addiction.”

58. Nine Perfect Strangers

Actress Nicole Kidman and producer David E. Kelley, who recently worked together on the HBO drama The Undoing, will be teaming with Melissa McCarthy in the new Hulu series Nine Perfect Strangers. Based on the New York Times Bestseller by Australian author Liane Moriarty, the series is set in a luxury spa called the Tranquillum House and follows the titular strangers as they seek to remake themselves under the watchful eye of the spa’s mysterious owner, Masha. Kidman will be playing the role of Masha and McCarthy will be playing Frances, a romance novelist who comes to the spa nursing a broken back and a broken heart.

57. The Old Man

While this adaptation of the 2017 novel by Thomas Perry has been in the works since 2019, The Old Man had yet to announce its lead actor until Disney Investor Day 2020. Academy Award Winner Jeff Bridges will star as Dan Chase; a former CIA operative who is forced to come out of retirement after he becomes the target of unknown assassins. The series will also feature John Lithgow and air on both Hulu and FX.

56. American Horror Stories

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced this spinoff series in May 2020, but little had been confirmed beyond its existence. The new series will air on FX and Hulu and will consist of 16 standalone episodes focused on “horror myths, legends and lore.” Sara Paulson, who made her directorial debut on the original series, will reportedly be directing at least one episode and the cast will include many actors from earlier seasons of American Horror Story.

55. Platform

Described as “an innovative scripted anthology,” Platform is the brainchild of The Office star BJ Novak. Each half-hour episode of the FX and Hulu series will center around a different cast of characters dealing with current events. Novak will be writing, directing and executive producing the series, but is not expected to appear on-camera.

54. Reservation Dogs

Reservation Dogs is a new half-hour comedy which will air on FX and Hulu. The series centers around four Native American teenagers growing up on a reservation in eastern Oklahoma. The series was co-created by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi and Native American director Sterlin Harjo.

53. Y: The Last Man

Based on the Vertigo Comics series about an amateur escape artist who finds himself as the last man on Earth following a plague that kills every mammal with a Y-chromosome except himself and his pet monkey, the television adaptation of Y: The Last Man went through several false starts before finding a home on FX and Hulu. The series is scheduled to begin filming in early 2021 and the cast will include Diane Lane in an unnamed role.

52. Alien

FX and Hulu will host the first television series set in the reality of the Alien films, which will also be set on Earth for the first time. The new series is being overseen by Noah Hawley, who has experience adapting classic movies into hit television series after several years writing, directing, and producing the television series Fargo. Hawley was also responsible for the X-Men drama Legion, so hopes are high that he can do something exciting with the Alien franchise.

51. Shogun

Based on James Clavell’s novel of the same name, Shogun tells the story of John Blackthorne; a 17th century Englishman who finds himself reevaluating everything he knows about morality, truth, and freedom when he becomes stranded in Nippon. The new series, which is described as Game of Thrones set in feudal Japan, will air on FX and Hulu and is being produced by Counterpart creator Justin Marks and his wife Rachel Kondo, who will act as supervising producer. Producer/Director Tim Van Patten, best known for his work on Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, is also attached to the production.

50. Star Wars: Rangers Of The New Republic

Little is known about this Star Wars show beyond its title and it being set in the same timeline as The Mandalorian. The new series will air on Disney+ but nothing has been announced regarding the series’ cast or crew, though it’s believed, based on its name, that it will center on the X-wing pilots in the Outer Rim. It is suspected, however, that this might be a long-rumored spinoff of The Mandalorian based around Gina Carano’s character Cara Dune, who is now a Marshal of the New Republic.

49. Star Wars: Ahsoka

This Star Wars series was one of the most pleasant surprises to come out of Disney Investor Day 2020. Rosario Dawson will return to play Ahsoka Tano, who recently made her first live-action appearance in The Mandalorian, after being introduced in the Clone Wars animated movie in 2008. The new series will be set at the same time as The Mandalorian and air exclusively on Disney+. It’s believed she will be hunting down Grand Admiral Thrawn in her series, though that hasn’t been confirmed.

48. Star Wars: Andor

Scheduled for release sometime in 2022, Andor is the first Star Wars live-action project to revisit the characters introduced in Rogue One. Set in the early days for the Rebel Alliance’s formation, the series will see Diego Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor and detail how he came to be a Rebel spy. The series will also feature Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma and Alan Tudyk as the voice of K-2SO.

47. Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rumors of a film or miniseries devoted to the first Jedi shown in the Star Wars films have been floating around for years, but it has finally been confirmed that Ewan McGregor will reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Disney+ miniseries. Nothing has been said of the story beyond the fact that the show will be set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. It has been confirmed, however, that Hayden Christensen will also be returning to play the role of Darth Vader.

46. Star Wars: Visions

Anime fans will have something to look forward to with this new Disney+ anthology series. Scheduled for 10 episodes, Star Wars: Visions will showcase short animated films “celebrating Star Wars through the lens of the world’s best anime creators.” None of the animators tied to the project have been named yet, but they are said to represent several of Japan’s leading anime studios.

45. Star Wars: Lando

While Han Solo may have gotten the glory and the princess, most Star Wars fans agree that Lando Calrissian is the galaxy’s greatest scoundrel. The charming gambler will be returning in a new Disney+ event series overseen by Dear White People director Justin Simien. It is unclear who will be playing Lando and at what point in time the series will be set, but Donald Glover (who played the part in Solo: A Star Wars Story) has reportedly been eager to return to the role. Yet we wouldn’t bet against Billy Dee Williams, who returned to play Lando in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, donning his cape for one more adventure.

44. Star Wars: Acolyte

Set 200 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Acolyte will be the first live-action Star Wars production set during what is known as the High Republic era. The series is described as “a mystery-thriller that will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers.” The show is being overseen by Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland.

43. Star Wars: A Droid Story

C-3PO and R2-D2 will be appearing in a new animated Star Wars series called A Droid Story. No information is available regarding when the Disney+ series is set. Indeed, little is known at this time beyond the title and the fact that the series’ two most famous droid protagonists will be guiding a new hero to their destiny.

42. Willow

While considered a modest success compared to Star Wars, Willow has stood the test of time to become a beloved fantasy classic with a devout fandom that have longed to see more adventures of the aspiring Nelwyn sorcerer. Warwick Davis is signed to reprise the role in a new Disney+ series. The new show will find Willow, older and wiser, being dragged into a new adventure. The series will also star Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaen and Erin Kellyman.

41. Indiana Jones 5

Indiana Jones 5 has been in the works since 2008 and rumors have run wild since then egarding the possibility of Harrison Ford being recast. This will not happen, according to the Disney Investor Day announcement regarding Indy 5. Ford is ready to take one more crack at the whip and fedora. The untitled Indy movie is scheduled for release in the summer of 2022 and will be directed by Logan director James Mangold.

40. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

Scheduled for release in theaters in December 2023, Rogue Squadron may now be the most highly anticipated Star Wars property of all. The film was announced by Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, who spoke of her desire to make “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time” in honor of her fighter pilot father and how her next project would allow her to do that and to make a movie about something else she loved: Star Wars. No details are available about the storyline yet, but Star Wars fans have been clamoring for a film based upon the elite Rebel Alliance squadron for years.

39-33. National Geographic Shows and Documentaries

The Disney Investor Day 2020 announcements included a number of new shows and specials made in conjunction with the National Geographic Society for Disney+. Chief among these is Limitless, which is described as “one-part science, one-part action adventure” and will star Chris Hemsworth as he travels the world testing the limits of his endurance in various exotic locales. Darren Aronofsky will produce another series, Welcome To Earth, in which Will Smith travels the world to examine unexplained phenomena.

Other upcoming documentary releases include A Real Bugs Life, America The Beautiful, and Costeau, which details the life of legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. Sigourney Weaver will narrate Secrets of the Whales; a new nature documentary produced by James Cameron. Disney+ will also be releasing the fourth installment of Genius: Martin Luther King, Jr.

32. Big Shot

Joining The Mighty Ducks reboot on the roster of new sports-related series on Disney+ is this dramedy about the girls basketball team at a girl’s private high school. The show stars Yvette Nicole Brown as the school’s dean, John Stamos as the school’s temperamental head basketball coach and Jessalyn Gilsig as the good-natured assistant coach.

31. Hocus Pocus 2

Rumors of a sequel to the beloved Halloween classic Hocus Pocus have run amok through 2020. An announcement at Disney Investor Day 2020 has confirmed that Hocus Pocus 2 is in the works. However, the involvement of the original Sanderson Sisters – Kathy Najimy, Bette Midler, and Sarah Jessica Parker – has yet to be confirmed.

30-28. Inspirational Sport Films

Following hot on the heels of Safety, which tells the inspiring story of former Clemson University football safety Ray McElrathbey, Disney+ will be producing three more films based on the trials and tribulations faced by various star athletes. None of the films have titles or casts set, but it has been confirmed that will be based upon the lives of basketball player Chris Paul, basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo, and American footballer Keanon Lowe.

27. Cheaper By The Dozen Reboot

A more modern take on the Cheaper By The Dozen films has been rumored since Disney took over the family film franchise in 2019. It has now been confirmed that a reboot overseen by Black-ish producer Kenya Barris is in the works and will center around a blended family of 12 and their family business. Gabrielle Union is signed-on to star.

26. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

Based on the popular children’s book series by Jeff Kinney, the original Diary of A Wimpy Kid films were a huge hit for Fox. Disney is hoping to find similar success with an animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie modeled on Kinney’s artwork. The film will be released on Disney+ sometime in 2021.

25. The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild

Fans of the Ice Age films had longed hope that Buck, the swashbuckling weasel voiced by Simon Pegg, might one day earn his own movie. That day will come on Disney+ sometime in early 2022. The movie will also feature the prankster possum brothers Crash and Eddie.

24. Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers

Fans had been hoping for an animated revival of Rescue Rangers since their cameo in the Duck Tales reboot. Instead they’re getting a feature-length film combining live action and animation, ala Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Akiva Schaffer will be directing the film, which will star John Mulaney as Chip and Andy Samberg as Dale.

23. Pinocchio

It was known that Disney has several live-action adaptations of their classic animated films in the works, including The Little Mermaid. However, the Disney Investor Day 2020 presentation stunned everyone with the announcement that a live-action Pinocchio will be released on Disney+. Little else is known at this time beyond the facts that the film is being directed by Robert Zemeckis and will star Tom Hanks, presumably as the toy-maker Geppetto.

22. Peter Pan & Wendy

Peter Pan & Wendy is another live-action adaptation going directly to Disney+. The title roles have not been cast yet. However, it has been confirmed that Yara Shahidi will be playing the fairy Tinker Bell and Jude Law will be playing the pirate Captain Hook.

21. Disenchanted – An Enchanted Sequel

The 2007 film Enchanted was a hilarious send-up of the traditional Disney Princess story. A sequel called Disenchanted had reportedly been in the works for years, but there had been no news regarding it since early 2018. Thankfully, it seems that the script has been set and Amy Adams has been confirmed to be returning as Giselle, but there’s no word on the rest of the cast just yet. There’s also no word on exactly when fans can expect to see the film on Disney+.

20. Sister Act 3

Whoopi Goldberg is back in the habit for a long-awaited Sister Act sequel that will be released directly to Disney+. Goldberg is also producing the film, along with Tyler Perry. There is no news yet regarding the rest of the cast or the film’s story.

19. Baymax!

Spinning out of the world of Big Hero 6, BayMax will be focused on the loveable inflatable robot hero. The series will be exclusive to Disney+, unlike the current Big Hero 6 series, which can be seen on Disney XD. It is expected to premiere sometime in 2022.

18. Zootopia+

Set in the titular city where predator and prey live in relative peace, Zootopia+ will expand upon the world of the original movie. The show will have an anthology format, focusing on different characters in every episode. It will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2022.

17. Tiana

Centered around the heroine of The Princess and The Frog, it is unknown if Tiana will be set before or after the events of the 2009 film. The show is described as being a long-form musical comedy and it will premiere sometime in 2022.

16. Moana

Little is known about the upcoming Moana series beyond the fact that it exists. It is unknown, for instance, if it will be a sequel or a prequel to the original film or which voice actors from the original will be returning. It will premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2023.

15. Iwájú

Made in collaboration with the Pan-African entertainment company Kugali, Iwájú is a historic work for Walt Disney animation. Based on a popular African comic book, the science-fiction series is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ sometime in 2022.

14. Encanto

Scheduled to open in theaters in Fall 2021, Encanto will be the 60th feature-length animated film produced by Disney. The film is set in Columbia, where a magical family live in a magical home. Directed by the same team behind Zootopia, Encanto will also feature music in English and Spanish, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

13. Popcorn

Pixar first found fame for their short films before they moved on to making full-length features. The studio hasn’t forgotten their roots, however, and will be returning to them with Popcorn; a collection of several bite-size films starring some of Pixar’s most popular characters. It will premiere in January 2021 on Disney+.

12-10. Dug Days, A Cars Series, and Win or Lose

Pixar will also be producing three animated series for Disney+. The first, Dug Days, will center around the loveable dog from Up and is scheduled to premiere in Fall 2021. The second, which does not have a title yet, will be set in the Cars universe and star Lightning McQueen and Mater. It is expected to air sometime in Fall 2022. Finally, in Fall 2023, Pixar will premiere an original anthology series, Win or Lose, which will tell the story of a middle school baseball team as they prepare for the championship.

9. Turning Red

Most tween girls feel awkward about themselves and Mei is no exception. What makes Mei exceptional is that she transforms into a giant red panda whenever she becomes too excited. Directed by Domee Shi, who directed the Academy Award-winning short Bao, Turning Red will arrive in theaters in Spring 2022.

8. Lightyear

Nominally a spinoff based on the Toy Story character, Lightyear tells the “real” story of the test pilot who inspired the toy. Chris Evans will lend his voice to the real Buzz, as he goes to infinity and beyond. The film will be landing in theaters in the Summer of 2022.

7. Secret Invasion

Based on the Marvel Comics storyline of the same name, Secret Invasion will center around the efforts to the shapeshifting Skrulls to infiltrate Earth society. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn will return as the Skrull Talos. The series will air exclusively on Disney+.

6. Ironheart

Tony Stark is dead, but the world still needs heroes who have the tools, the talent and the tech to protect it. Enter Riri Williams; a prodigy who has her own armored suit and is ready to fill the vacuum left by Iron Man. Dominique Thorne will star in this series based on the popular Marvel Comics book.

5. Armor Wars

What happens when Tony Stark’s technology starts falling into the wrong hands? His best friend James Rhodes goes to war. Based on the classic Iron Man storyline from the comics, Don Cheadle will reprise his role as James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine.

4. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

Inspired by the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, James Gunn will write and direct this undoubtedly twisted holiday special. It is expect to film at the same time as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and will, hopefully, be out in time for all the major Earth holidays in 2022.

3. I Am Groot

Set during the span of time between the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, I Am Groot will center around the misadventures of Baby Groot. Little has been said about this series beyond that and the fact that it will feature “several new and unusual characters.” Given the variety of beings who exist in the cosmic side of Marvel Comics, that could include almost anyone.

2. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Two generations of Ant-Men and Wasps will appear in the upcoming Quantumania. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer are all returning to reprise their roles, facing Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain, Kang the Conqueror. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to start filming in early 2021 in anticipation of a Spring 2023 release.

1. Fantastic Four

Ever since Disney bought Fox, Marvel Comics fans have been awaiting the introduction of those characters whose film rights Fox owned into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has now been confirmed that the first family of Marvel Comics, the Fantastic Four, will be the first of these beloved characters to join the MCU. There’s no word on the cast just yet, but the film will be directed by Spider-Man’s Jon Watts.
