Alyssa Milano Thinks Charmed Reboot Disrespected The Original Stars

Actress Alyssa Milano believes the Charmed reboot is disrespectful of the original series. The CW originally ordered the reboot of Charmed in 2018. After the first episode aired, existing Charmed fans soon learned the show is a different take on the sisters who eventually become the Charmed Ones.

The original series, which aired from 1998 through 2006, followed the Halliwell sisters, a trio of witches who were the Charmed Ones, destined to save the world from evil, including demons. The series starred Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Doherty and later Rose McGowan, who replaced Doherty after she left the show. The new series follows the same premise but reboots the idea of the Charmed Ones. This time, the three sisters are new characters portrayed by Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery. However, the new series does not reference the previous one, something Combs has already spoken out against.

Milano joins Combs in her frustration. In an interview with US Weekly, Milano spoke about how The CW even approached her, or the other actresses from the old series, about the new show. Although Milano admitted to having not seen the new series, when asked about the possibility of reuniting with her Charmed co-stars on the new series, she said:

“I think that ship has sailed. I think that they ruined the possibility of that by the way in which the reboot came down. Like, the fact that we weren’t included from the very beginning. It just felt really disrespectful, you know?”

One actress from the original series who disagrees, though, is Doherty. Although she did not like the initial marketing of the new show, Doherty wished the Charmed reboot success and stated she was willing to give it a chance. It seems the new show has already picked up its share of fans, too: The CW recently renewed Charmed for season 2. Although reviews of the series have been mixed through its first season, viewers seem to appreciate its focus on diversity, as well as women’s issues.

It’s likely that hardcore fans of the original Charmed series will never accept the reboot, but the first season of the new Charmed was a fairly entertaining one full of dastardly demons, sisterly love and complicated romances. It hasn’t shied away from killing off characters, nor has it lost some of the original’s more charming moments. At its heart, Charmed is about the power of three, or more importantly, the power of family, just like in the original show. However, most would agree it would be nice to see the original Charmed cast in the new series in some way: there’s no arguing with Milano on that.
