Content Warning: Major Spoilers for Amazon’s Encounter ahead.

Amazon’s Encounter tells the story of the mental fallout of one man who loses everything – and what he does thereafter. When Malik Khan kidnaps his sons out of their home where they live with their mother and stepfather under the guise of saving them from an alien invasion, his ruse gets out of hand, causing a desperate manhunt to ensue.

Throughout this harrowing tale, many characters prove their intelligence, or lack thereof, through the choices they make – especially the choices made in the midst of peril. Some cement themselves in their competence, whilst others very nearly get themselves or others killed by their lack.

10 Dwight McKinley

Dwight McKinley, played by Brennan Keel Cook, is one of the two sons of Grant McKinley, who is severely beaten by Malik after entering his home. As a result of the scuffle, Dwight and his brother Kurt report Malik’s location to the police and chase after their father’s attacker themselves, tracking him down to an abandoned settlement in the Nevada desert.

Dwight appears to be the less intelligent of the two brothers, firing indiscriminately at those whom he sees as threats, failing to take into account their likelihood of them actually harming him. He even fires off several rounds in the direction of Jay Khan, Malik’s young son. Overall, he is easily outsmarted and tied up by Malik at the end of their struggle.

9 Kurt McKinley

Kurt is the second of the McKinley brothers, as well as the one who seems to be the leader of the two. It is he who navigates their course on the trail after Malik, and the one who demands justice from the man who attacked his father. He also takes the more brutal beating, leaving his survival unclear.

Played by Bill Dawes, Kurt is far from a reasonable man based on what is presented in the film, he does seem to have a better head on his shoulders than his brother. He appears to act with more precision and forethought, only taking shots when he has a clear view of his target and a steady aim. It is his competence that makes him a tougher opponent for Malik than Dwight.

8 Dylan

Misha Collins, known for playing Castiel on Supernatural, joins Encounter in the small role of Dylan, Piya’s husband, and Jay and Bobby Khan’s stepfather. He is shown to have a relatively amicable relationship with the younger Khan boy but has a more difficult time getting through to Jay.

In his limited screen time, Dylan doesn’t do much to cement the audience’s confidence in his quick thinking skills. It is revealed shortly after Jay and Bobby disappear that he and Piya allowed Malik into the house despite knowing that he wasn’t supposed to be there. Through mostly unclear events, Malik somehow gained enough of an upper hand over the two to tie them up in the garage and leave them there.

7 Piya

Piya is the ex-wife of Malik Khan, the wife of Dylan, and the mother of Jay and Bobby. Played by Janina Gavankar, the character only makes a handful of scattered appearances throughout the film. Her main motivation entails wanting her boys to build a familial bond with her new husband and build a family once more.

Despite very little screen time to speak of, Piya does make a handful of unadvisable choices, including deciding to let her unstable ex-husband inside the house with both of their sleeping children inside. Piya’s problem is not that she is unintelligent, but rather that she is too trusting for her own good.

6 Bobby Khan

Bobby Khan, played by child actor Aditya Geddada, is the youngest of the Khan brothers. Like his older brother, he adores his father Malik, who comes in the middle of the night to take them away under the claim that the world was being infested with parasitic aliens.

Bobby is fairly smart for his age, often following with adult conversations and butting in with his own witty banter from time to time. However, as a product of his age, he falls for his father’s ploys with ease, rarely ever questioning Malik’s motives or actions.

5 Lance Dunn

Lance Dunn works with the criminal investigation unit dispatched to track down Malik Khan and the two kidnapped boys. Played by Shane McRae, known for his roles in Sneaky Pete and Four Kings, the character has a brief role in the investigation of the missing Khan boys.

Dunn is not particularly the most likable character in the film, but one cannot deny his competence in doing his job. Though he is very much overshone by the clearly more seasoned Shepard West, Dunn does appear to have plenty of experience in his field, which comes in handy during the hunt for Malik and his sons.

4 Hattie Hayes

Though this is far from Octavia Spencer’s best movie, the Oscar-winning actress lends her talents quite nicely to Encounter as the character of Hattie Hayes, Malik’s parole officer, who gets swept up in the manhunt for her ward and his two missing sons.

The film initially sets Hayes up as a character whose poor judgment led to the harrowing events that unfold therein. However, it eventually becomes clear that Hayes did not misjudge Malik’s character, and her urgings for a peaceful resolution may be the only thing that allowed for the film’s climactic standoff to end without any bloodshed. In the end, Hayes may actually be the true hero of the story, through her keen judgement of character.

3 Jay Khan

Jay Khan is the oldest of Malik’s two sons and the one around whom much of the film is centered. Jay, played by Lucian-River Chauhan, idolizes his father to the point of embarking with him on an unplanned road trip in the middle of the night, despite the rather unusual excuse given.

Even though Jay inherently believes his father’s story at the beginning of the film, he proves to be too smart to continue to fall for the lie. Unlike his younger brother Bobby, Jay becomes suspicious of his father’s erratic behavior, eventually becoming the one to discover Encounter’s twist that he never saw coming: that the aliens his father spoke of were never real to begin with.

2 Shepard West

Rory Cochrane, known for his roles in Argo and CSI: Miami, plays the lead investigator on the case of Malik and the missing boys. His character ushers in a new dimension of the film, shifting Encounter’s tone from a sci-fi alien film to a paranoid thriller, when it is revealed that the alien threat is not real at all, but an invention of Malik’s mind.

West may be the man in charge, but that doesn’t mean that he is unwilling to consider the input of others. One of the things that puts him above his colleagues is his willingness to listen to Hattie’s suggestions, even when he is wary of them. It is this facet of good leadership combined with the prowess the character appears to have picked up over his career that make him the best at what he does.

1 Malik Khan

Malik Khan, played by Oscar-winning actor Riz Ahmed, is the father of Jay and Bobby. After a series of incidents that wore away at his mental state, Malik sneaks into his children’s home and takes them away in the night, claiming that he is protecting them from an impending alien invasion. However, it soon becomes clear that it is not safe for the boys to be around their father.

Despite the danger that Malik often puts his children in and the fragility of his mental state, the character proves to be more intelligent than the rest of the cast. He manages to consistently outwit the authorities on his tail and whoever else he comes across on the road that may wish him harm. Though this intelligence often works against him to cement his false notions, there is no denying the brain power of Malik Khan.
