Content warning: Major spoilers for Amazon’s Encounter.

Amazon’s Encounter tells the story of the mental fallout of one man who loses everything, and what he does thereafter. When Malik Khan kidnaps his sons out of their home where they live with their mother and stepfather under the guise of saving them from an alien invasion, his ruse gets out of hand, causing a desperate manhunt to ensue.

Throughout this harrowing tale, many characters prove their likability, or of unlikability, through the choices they make, especially the choices they make in the midst of peril. Some reveal their core natures to be truly good, while others let their true colors condemn them.

10 Dwight McKinley

Brennan Lee Cook plays Dwight McKinley, who, with his brother Kurt, tracks down Malik Khan and his family after their father is attacked in his own home, being severely beaten in the aftermath. The two brothers finally catch up to the Khan family in the Nevada desert, where a struggle ensues between the two factions.

On several occasions, Dwight proves himself to be the less likable of the two brothers, often allowing his emotions to cloud his decision-making. One of his most egregious acts comes when he fires in the direction of Jay, Malik’s oldest son, only to be stopped by his brother before committing an act he could never undo. Nevertheless, Dwight seems relatively unrepentant for the near-miss.

9 Kurt McKinley

Played by Bill Dawes, Kurt McKinley is the second of the McKinley brothers that chase after Malik Khan and his children through the Nevada wasteland. He leads his brother into battle, demanding justice for what Malik did to their father, even if it means exacting that justice himself.

Though he is far from a likable character, Kurt does appear to have more morality than his brother. Despite chasing after Malik and his children through the Nevada desert, Kurt is more than willing to keep the younger Khans out of the fight, only desiring to exact revenge on Malik himself, whereas Dwight very nearly killed the boys as well.

8 Lance Dunn

Shane McRae, known for his work on Sneaky Pete and Four Kings, portrays the character of Lance Dunn, an investigator who works with Shepard West and Hattie Hayes to track down the missing Khan boys and return them home before their father does something irreversible and terrible.

Though Dunn appears to be a relatively competent investigator, his demeanor is far from personable in doing so. He almost immediately clashes with Hattie, whose only desire is to see all parties involved return to some state of normalcy. His overall glibness and superior sensibilities make him a difficult man to like.

7 Dylan

Misha Collins, known for playing the character of Castiel on Supernatural, joins the cast of Encounter as Dylan, the stepfather of Jay and Bobby Khan. While Dylan enjoys a personable relationship with Bobby, he is depicted as having a more difficult time connecting with Jay, who sees him as a replacement for his father.

Dylan does not have much screen time in the film, doing little to sway fans’ opinions on the character either way. However, he does appear to have a rather short temper, sending Jay to his room immediately after things go awry at the dinner table. Nonetheless, the man does appear to genuinely care for the Khan boys, desiring a good relationship with both of them.

6 Piya

Piya is the mother of Bobby and Jay Khan, and the ex-wife of Malik. Played by Janina Gavanakar, the character seems to deeply desire her two sons to grow a relationship with her new husband Dylan, even though the eldest is vehemently opposed to such a notion.

Despite very limited screen time, Piya is presented as a character the audience is supposed to like. Though it is implied that her marriage with Malik was not ended on the best of terms, she appears to have maintained enough of a relationship with her former husband to continue to send him Jay’s drawings in the mail, highlighting her selflessness in caring for her children.

5 Shepard West

Rory Cochrane, known for his roles in Argo and CSI: Miami, joins the cast of Amazon’s Encounter as Shepard West, the lead investigators on the case of Malik and his missing sons. West employs a number of tactics to track down the Khans, eventually leading to a standoff in the desert between Malik, Jay, and the police.

Shepard West ushers in a new dimension of the film, shifting the tone from a sci-fi alien movie to something more like a paranoid thriller film when he reveals that the alien threat built up in the first act of the movie is only a figment of Malik’s imagination. Nevertheless, West does not condemn Malik completely upon this realization, instead choosing to listen to Hattie’s pleas to settle things peacefully. Unlike certain other colleagues, such as Lance, West proves himself to be a perfectly reasonable man.

4 Bobby Khan

Child actor Aditya Geddada plays Bobby Khan, the youngest of the Khan family, in the first credited role of his career. Like his older brother Jay, Bobby is ecstatic when their father Malik shows up to take them on an impromptu road trip under the guise of escaping the impending alien invasion.

It is hard not to love Bobby, given his childish wonder and very simple view of the world in which his father is always right. Despite several moments of insolence, he is a mostly well-behaved child without a cruel bone in his body, which makes it all the harder to watch him fall for his father’s lies.

3 Malik Khan

Malik Khan, the main character of the film, is played by the Oscar Award-winning actor Riz Ahmed, known for his work in The Sound of Metal and Venom. Malik is the father of Jay and Bobby, who takes them on the road to escape what he claims is a parasitic alien threat.

In a twist that few of the characters saw coming, it is revealed halfway through the film that Malik Khan’s story about an impending alien threat was not true at all. Despite this revelation, it is hard not to be swept away by the charm of Malik’s character, assisted by the brilliant earnestness of Ahmed’s portrayal. The man truly cares for his sons, and in the end, must do what is best for them, even if it means giving them up.

2 Hattie Hayes

Octavia Spencer lends her talents to Encounter in the role of Hattie Hayes. Hayes is Malik’s parole officer who becomes aware of his kidnapping of Jay and Bobby, alerting the authorities to the matter. She becomes an important asset to the investigation, helping track down Malik before he does something he would regret.

Though this is far from one of Octavia Spencer’s best movies, the Oscar-winning actress still manages to shine in her role, showing off the charm and character that she has become known for portraying. Additionally, the character proves to be a vital part of the peaceful resolution at the end of the film, encouraging both Malik and the authorities not to fire on one another. Her protection of all life at any cost makes Hattie one of the film’s best characters.

1 Jay Khan

Lucian-River Chauhan plays the role of Jay Khan, the eldest of Malik and Piya’s two sons, and the one around whom much of the film’s story centers. After embarking on an unplanned road trip with his father and younger brother in an attempt to escape a fictional alien parasite, Jay begins to unravel the tangled web of his father’s mind.

Throughout the film, Jay does not always make the best decisions, but it becomes clear that he has a heart of gold. He stands by his family at every trial, no matter how much they may have wronged him. This all culminates in a climactic standoff between the cops and Malik, where Jay fearlessly takes his father’s gun and attempts to use it to save them both. Thankfully, the boy was also reasonable enough to be talked down before things took a tragic turn.
