AMDs FidelityFX Promises To Match Nvidias DLSS Game Boosts

Tech company AMD has launched a new graphics technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution, intended to challenge Nvidia’s DLSS – popular for boosting the framerates of games by rendering them at a low resolution but then upscaling the output. Until now, the availability of DLSS on RTX video cards has given Nvidia a performance advantage.

DLSS dates back to early 2019, whereas FidelityFX Super Resolution – FSR for short – was first teased during the announcement of Radeon RX 6000 cards in fall 2020. AMD is likely in a rush to deploy FSR, as the number of DLSS-ready games is steadily growing, including triple-A titles like Fortnite, Doom Eternal, and Red Dead Redemption 2. In the case of GPU-intensive titles like Cyberpunk 2077, DLSS can be the key to unlocking rendering features that would otherwise cause a PC to chug.

FSR is actually a “spatial upscaling algorithm” that operates differently from time-based methods like DLSS, according to AMD and Polygon. The benefits can potentially be dramatic, for example boosting average 6800 XT framerates in Godfall from 59fps to 144. When selecting Performance mode in 4K – with actual rendering happening in 1080p – FSR is said to produce an average 2.4x framerate boost for games on RX 6000 cards. The technology is optimized for AMD’s 5000- and 6000-series products, but open-source, making it capable of running on Vegas, the integrated GPUs on Ryzen processors, and even Nvidia products. Indeed, it’s said to work with Nvidia’s GTX 10 series, which could grant it upscaling that DLSS itself doesn’t allow. FSR is already confirmed to be coming to the Xbox Series X/S, and reportedly has no obstacles on the PS5.

The initial slate of FSR-compatible PC games includes 22 Racing Series, Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2, Godfall, Kingshunt, Terminator: Resistance, and The Riftbreaker. Far Cry 6, Resident Evil Village, and DotA 2 are slated by the end of 2021, with titles like Vampire the Masquerade: Blood Hunt beyond that. The Riftbreaker should be the first compatible Xbox Series X/S game. Over 40 game studios are working on adding support, among them EA, Capcom, Obsidian, Rebellion, Ubisoft, Valve, and Warner Bros.

4K has proven to be a tough barrier for games to crack. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are both capable of 4K, but games like Jedi: Fallen Order often ask players to choose between “quality” and “performance” modes, the latter periodically sacrificing resolution to maintain 60fps. Even most PC players stick to 1080p or 1440p, though that’s as much because there’s no benefit to 4K when playing in front of a monitor. AMD’s FSR could help make the resolution a universal standard.
