American Horror Story is one of the best anthology horror TV series of its kind and has been a staple on the FX network since 2011. After nine seasons, fans have their opinions on which season was the best, and there are quite a few reasons why the original season, Murder House, is the best of them all.

During season one, no one knew what the series would become and which direction it would go next, which is why so many people tuned in. The series has spawned into a phenomenon and continues to grow in popularity, even if some seasons don’t necessarily knock it out of the park when it comes to scariness. While fans anxiously await for the tenth season, perhaps they should go back to where it all started and relive the beginning of American Horror Story.

10 Vivien Harmon

Every other month. Not that I’m really complaining. After all that blood. Ben hates blood. – Best temperament, barely ever cries. Just like his Daddy.

From the get-go, Vivien’s (Connie Britton) life was in shambles. After going through a miscarriage, her husband Ben (Dylan McDermott) commits adultery with his student Hayden (Kate Mara), which results in the Harmons moving across the country. But before their move to Murder House, and before she knew Ben was having an affair, her trip to the doctor is where she’s first introduced. After experiencing complications after the miscarriage, she’s seen having a conversation with her doctor on how to get back on track.

While Vivien’s life doesn’t get better throughout the season, there is some semblance of happiness by the last episode, titled “Afterbirth.” After her entire family is dead and they’re now bound to the house, she’s seen with her twin son, who died with her, around the holidays. It seems like she’s forgiven Ben for the time being while cuddling her son in front of a lit-up Christmas tree.

9 Ben Harmon

Oh, my God. No, Viv. No, no. – I didn’t think it was possible for me again, but I’m happy.

Ben’s introduction to Murder House isn’t the best, and that’s because he’s a cheater and a liar. After Vivian gets back from the hospital, she believes there’s a burglar in her house. After calling 911, she investigates herself, and upon opening her bedroom door, she finds Ben and his mistress in their bed. Ben’s first line in the season is off-camera, but it’s a memorable one that haunts him for the entire season.

Like Vivian, Ben’s time in their new Los Angeles home isn’t a pleasant one, and after he joins his family in the after-life, he’s finally happy. It took an eternity locked in the infamous Murder House to find satisfaction, which is disturbing and charming at the same time.

8 Tate Langdon

Two years ago. It’s always the same. It starts the same way. – Forever if I have to.

Tate (Evan Peters) is a complex character because he’s clearly a disturbed teenager whose evil influence primarily comes from his time in the Murder House. After his mother Constance (Jessica Lange) asks him to get the inside scoop on the Harmons, he opts to get psychological treatment from Dr. Harmon. Even though it was a ruse, his confessions to Ben seem real, like his first line in the series.

After Tate meets Violet (Taissa Farmiga), it seems like love at first sight. After Violent realizes what he’s done while alive and dead, she blocks him out of her life. His loyalty towards her never falters and is even resolved in Apocalypse. Because of his sweet side, it’s always a toss-up of love and hate with Tate.

7 Violet Harmon

It’s called smog. – These ornaments are ancient.

From the start, Violet didn’t want to move to Los Angeles and start over. Because she really didn’t have a choice, she went with it but dropped one-liners like the one above. Her dislike towards the glitz and glam of Los Angeles is apparent, and it’s not until she finds out about her new home’s history that she seems to warm up to the situation.

Like her parents, her time in Murder House was more negative than positive, and once she comes to terms with the fact she’s a ghost, her personality changes. She, her parents, and Moira O’Hara (Frances Conroy/Alexandra Breckenridge) have formed somewhat of an alliance and join together to make the best of their situation. As they celebrate the holidays, Moira and Violet are seen decorating the tree with ornaments Moira found in the attic.

6 Larry Harvey

Your family is in danger. – I know you loved me once, Constance. Just say it. And I can face whatever may come.

Larry Harvey (Denis O’Hare) is a mix of villain and hero because he tries to warn the Harmons of the house’s danger, but for a selfish reason, Constance’s original home can remain empty. His love for her trumps everything, and for that reason, his wrongdoings get in front of his good deeds. While Larry did try to warn Ben, his way about it was creepy and too demanding.

After Larry has come to terms with killing his family, he’s finally ready to see the damage he’s caused. He confesses to the murder of Constance’s boy toy Travis (Michael Graziadei), and is sent to prison. His final scene is in prison when Constance visits him. To deal with whatever prison may throw at him, he wants to be assured Constance loved him at one point in time. He never gets his assurance when Constance leaves before saying anything.

5 Constance Langdon

Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, I put on Dora the Explorer for you, so you would sit and watch it. – Now what am I gonna do with you?

Jessica Lange is the unofficial “Queen of American Horror Story,” and it’s hard to pick between her best role. Her introduction in Murder House happens when she finds her daughter Adelaide (Jamie Brewer) in the Harmons’ home. Constance plays it off like her visit was my mistake, and after scolding Addie for walking into their home, she degrades her by mentioning she left her favorite show on to keep her company.

Even though Constance’s family is virtually gone or stuck in the house next door, she takes it upon herself to raise the living Harmon twin, who becomes the Antichrist in Apocalypse. She realizes the boy isn’t normal, and after she walks in on a bloody scene that involves the nanny, her final line in the series is a set-up to cue viewers that the storyline isn’t finished.

4 Moira O’Hara

I’m Moira O’Hara. I’m the housekeeper. – I suppose they are. You’ll come to understand Violent, that the word ‘ancient’ loses its meaning when you’re entire existence is one long today.

Moira O’Hara has a tragic backstory, and after she’s killed in the Murder House by Constance, she’s trapped there forever. Posing as an attractive young maid to males and an older woman to females, she takes it upon herself to look after the occupants in the Murder House and promptly does so when she first finds Vivien hanging up clothes to dry.

Viewers get to see Moira’s softer side, and she even gets to see her ailing mother and set her free, as well. Moira’s story wraps up fairly well, and her last scene is with the Harmons, as they celebrate the holidays.

3 Adelaide “Addie” Langdon

Excuse me. You’re going to die in there. – Yay! I love the theater!

One of the very first characters to appear, besides rowdy twins Troy (Bodhi Schulz) and Bryan (Kai Schulz), is Adelaide “Addie” Langdon (Katelyn Reed). As a young girl, she was well aware of the evil living in Murder House and even gave the boys a fair warning before entering the dilapidated house.

Even though the grown-up Addie tragically died in an earlier episode, a flashback in the episode “Afterlife” showed her alive and well. A specific scene shows an earlier time in Murder House when Constance and her family and Larry lived there. While Tate doesn’t like Larry, Addie indulges his idea to go to the theater.

2 Nora Montgomery

American Horror Story Murder House Each Main Characters First & Last Line In The Season

Charles? – I’m not entirely sure I have the patience to be a mother. Probably all of those hideous nannies. Mother wasn’t very good at it either, truth be told.

After Vivien realizes her home might have a few unwarranted guests, she decides to take the infamous tour around Los Angeles to discover more. When the guide concludes the tour in front of her home, the home’s original owners, The Montgomery’s, are introduced. Coming from a wealthy family, Nora Montgomery (Lily Rabe) keeps her husband Charles (Matt Ross) in check. She’s seen wandering the halls of Murder House, trying to find her husband before dinner.

Nora isn’t the main character of Murder House, but she is a pivotal one, based on the house’s origin. After she loses her own baby while she’s alive, she’s desperate for another child. When Vivien passes away after childbirth, Tate promises Nora one of the twins. When Vivien realizes her child is in the basement, she approaches the situation with ease, which works out in her favor. When Vivien offers to help, Nora realizes she isn’t fit for motherhood.

1 Dr. Charles Montgomery

For God’s sake! I’m working! – She’s going into shock. I can’t stop the hemorrhaging.

Charles Montgomery is the original villain who built Murder House and conducted unspeakable experiments and procedures in the basement. Before Nora knew his evil intentions, he’s first seen hiding out in the basement, working on something, and doesn’t want to be bothered.

Even though Charles is a malicious character, he does end up helping the Harmons deliver their babies. Since they didn’t have time to go to the hospital, he’s right there with the deceased nurses who died decades before, and once he realizes Vivien isn’t going to make it, he delivers the devastating news to Violet and Ben.
