10 Murder House: Constance Langdon
Many fans and critics consider Jessica Lange the undisputed Queen of AHS, and Constance Langdon is crucial to her legacy. Introduced as the invasive and abrasive neighbor to the Harmons, Constance soon reveals her duplicitous and murderous nature, making her a dangerous yet compelling character.
Thanks to Lange’s superb performance, Constance is unforgettable. She’s shady and cruel one moment, then becomes vulnerable and sympathetic the next. It’s a meal of a role, and the actress exploits every last ounce of humanity and complexity in it. Many fans believe Jessica Lange needs to return in future installments of AHS, but if she doesn’t come back, she still left behind a rich legacy of characters, and it all began with Constance.
9 Asylum: Jude Martin/Lana Winters
Asylum was an acting duel between two titans. On one side is Lange’s Sister Jude, Briarcliff’s iron fist ruler, who never allowed anyone to see the vulnerability within. On the other, Sarah Paulson’s Lana Winters, an ambitious reporter with an unbreakable will that hid more darkness than anyone guessed.
It’s impossible to declare one better than the other. Both Lana and Jude elevated Asylum to new storytelling heights. The season was chaotic and necessarily convoluted, including everything from aliens to demonic possessions. And yet, it also took so many risks that it’s impossible to condemn it in any way. It also provided Lange and Paulson with two of the best roles in their careers, a couple of complicated and erratic women who are among the most intelligent characters in Asylum. Lana and Jude took control of their own lives and never made any apologies for the hard choices they made.
8 Coven: Fiona Goode
Coven is arguably the best season of American Horror Story, and Fiona Goode is Jessica Lange’s best character. Equal parts glamorous and terrifying, Fiona represents both the best and worst of AHS. She’s unapologetic, bold, cruel, and dishonest. And yet, she never stops being entertaining and compelling, creating a character that audiences rooted for despite her blatant malice.
There’s yet to be another character with such levels of complexity. The show took the time to explain and explore Fiona’s obsessions, creating a three-dimensional portrayal of ambition, grief, and fear. Fiona was evil, no questions asked, but she was always inherently human, remaining mesmerizing until the very end.
7 Freak Show: Dandy Mott
AHS always succeeded in crafting excellent villains. However, Freak Show was the first time the show created an utterly despicable and irredeemable antagonist. Indeed, Dandy Mott is the very representation of privilege, a dark mirror of entitlement and power-lust.
Played with fearless bravado by Finn Wittrock, Dandy quickly became the show’s best villain up to that point. Dandy was pure cruelty within, a creature of pure hatred hiding behind the guise of a handsome young man. He ends up being the real monster in a season centered around freaks, proving that the worst dangers come from the least expected places.
6 Hotel: The Countess
Without a doubt, The Countess is one of American Horror Story’s best female characters. Her wardrobe alone is the stuff of dreams, but her characterization is far more impressive. She’s ethereal, unreachable, and larger than life, a woman unafraid to show just how bold and daring she is.
Many people doubted Lady Gaga’s acting skills, but the singer turned actress proved everyone wrong. Gaga delivered a layered and impressive performance, holding her own against the likes of Sarah Paulson and Dennis O’Hare. Hotel has plenty of memorable characters, but it’s the Countess that commands the entire season. She’s the central figure of the season, the driving force behind the plot, and the reason why fans stayed until the very end.
5 Roanoke: Lee Harris
Roanoke isn’t the audience’s favorite season. In fact, most fans enjoy making memes about Sarah Paulson’s constant screaming and the season’s often ridiculous plot. However, Roanoke remains AHS’s most daring season yet, an experiment that proves the show’s willingness to step outside the box even if it didn’t quite work.
Out of all the characters in the season, none are more memorable than Lee Harris, the sister of the season’s de-facto male lead. Lee has a troubled relationship with her ex-husband and daughter and becomes the ultimate survivor in the story. She is willing to do everything to survive and can often come across as plain evil. However, and thanks to Adina Porter’s brilliant performance, Lee is far more nuanced than any antagonist before her. She’s a fully-fledged character worthy of standing alongside AHS’s best figures.
4 Cult: Kai Anderson
Evan Peters is one of the best recurring actors in AHS. He first appeared in Murder House and participated in every season since, except for 1984. He was always good, bordering on excellent, but Cult was the best showcase of his range. Peters portrays Kai Anderson, often seen as the best villain in all of AHS. Kai is insecure, violent, intelligent, manipulative, and one of the best characters in any Ryan Murphy production.
What makes Kai so scary is his plausibility. He’s someone who could be walking down the street right now. In many ways, he’s the ultimate representation of fragile masculinity, a walking wounded ego willing to do everything to recover the place he feels rightly belongs to him. Peters doesn’t hold anything back, creating a dark and terrifying portrayal that stands as one of the best acting efforts in all of AHS.
3 Apocalypse: Cordelia Goode
Character crossovers are common in American Horror Story. Despite starting as an anthology, it wasn’t long before each season became connected, forming a sprawling television universe. Cordelia Goode first appeared in Coven, living under her mother’s shadow but at the end of the season, she becomes the Supreme. However, audiences don’t get to see her in all her glory until the ambitious season 8.
In Apocalypse, Cordelia is the assertive and courageous leader of the witches, a woman willing to do everything to protect her sisters. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that Cordelia is AHS’s greatest hero. She’s a beacon of hope that also happens to pack quite a lot of power. Cordelia is also a victory lap of sorts for Sarah Paulson, who, like Peters and Lange, is one of the pillars upon which AHS stands.
2 1984: Brooke Thompson
1984 was a change of pace for the show. It was the first time Paulson and Peters missed a season and Emma Roberts’ first time as the clear protagonist. However, Roberts rose to the challenge, creating her most distinctive character so far. She became famous with mean girl roles like Madison Montgomery and Serena Belinda, but good girl Brooke turned out to be her best role.
Brooke is the quintessential final girl. She starts as a pure, naive, and sweet girl before becoming an assertive and even aggressive young woman while still refusing to give in to the darkness that surrounds her. Brooke is unique in AHS lore; she’s a character who resists the season’s carnage without giving up her essence.
1 Red Tide: Belle Noir
Frances Conroy is one of the most consistent and exemplary actors in the AHS repertoire. Whether she’s playing the tragic Moira O’Hara or the eccentric Myrtle Snow, she always adds a unique touch to each of her characters. This year, Conroy stepped into one of her darkest roles yet, the unstoppable Belle Noir.
Noir is a complex character with a fascinating backstory. She used to be a gentle and meek woman before exchanging her soul for fame and success. Belle Noir allows Conroy to make full use of her impressive range, creating a deliciously evil character that stands as Red Tide’s most imposing figure. Only an actress of Conroy’s stature could pull such a task off and come out victorious.
