Each season, the winner of American Idol takes home hundreds of thousands of dollars and gets to sign a music contract to record original music. Since American Idol premiered on Fox in 2002, this franchise has been a launchpad for the careers of several music superstars with #1 hit songs, best-selling albums, multimillion-dollar net worths, and fans around the world. The series has crowned winners such as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, and Phillip Phillips, to name a few. Alas, even runners-up like Clay Aiken, Adam Lambert, Katharine McPhee, and David Archuleta went on to have very successful careers as well.

Ever since the first few American Idol winners until the most recent ones, it’s always been a huge deal for aspiring singers to win this competition before kickstarting their careers. During the years when American Idol aired on Fox, the show was mostly judged by Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul. New configurations to the judging panel included big names like Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, and Keith Urban. But since the series was revived at ABC, it has featured judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan. Additionally, behind the scenes, there have also been a few changes as to how finalists and winners are compensated.

As reported by Blast, the contestants who go on to become American Idol winners end up taking home $250,000. However, cashing in this prize money isn’t as straightforward as winning another reality competition. According to reports, the contracts signed by American Idol winners stipulate that they sign a recording contract with Hollywood Records. This label, like the ABC network, is a company owned by Disney. The winners then receive $125,000 when they start working on their album, then another $125,000 once they finish the album. In turn, a runner-up could win as much as $175,000, but that value is also separated into two parts of $87,500.

Getting to the top of an American Idol season is a huge challenge that only a few contestants have managed to conquer. However, there are plenty of professional and monetary rewards for those finalists. Once an American Idol winner signs a contract with Hollywood Records, they reportedly have four months to turn in their album. They are also given a budget of $300,000 to work on the album, but that is an “advance” that needs to be paid off once the album does come out.

It isn’t easy for a contestant to stay in the competition on American Idol, but surviving the music industry is yet another beast that these aspiring singers must slay. On the other hand, it is not too bad to win the show, make some money, record your debut albums, and established a big fanbase from your exposure on national TV.
