American Idol Season 18 Contestants Returning To Compete For Top 10 Spot

American Idol is bringing back multiple season 18 contestants for a second chance at the title. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck Hollywood last spring, reality competition shows like Idol ended up producing remote episodes, in which the contestants performed from their own homes. Host Ryan Seacrest and judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie even delivered their reactions from home as well. The show sent everyone the necessary video and audio equipment for their performances. Some singers chose to perform from inside their childhood homes, while others performed in their backyards.

American Idol was forced to quickly react to changing circumstances, and the series ended up being a guinea pig for other competition shows like The Voice and America’s Got Talent when it was their turn to do live shows. Unfortunately, this meant that season 18’s finalists never got to perform on the big stage during the live shows. Fans are used to seeing their American Idol favorites commanding the stage and belting it out for the audience each week. For the first time, that opportunity wasn’t an option.

So, the producers have decided to give some of those singers a second chance. Billboard is reporting American Idol is bringing back 10 contestants for one open spot in this season’s Top 10. Those singers are: Faith Becnel, Franklin Boone, DeWayne Crocker, Jr., Arthur Gunn, Cyniah Elise, Aliana Jester, Louis Knight, Nick Merico, Makayla Phillips, and Olivia Ximines. Not everyone was eligible to return, though. Any contestant who signed with a record label (Dillon James and Francisco Martin) was not invited back. Additionally, Just Sam was not eligible because she won season 18. It’s interesting to note producers are allowing the runner-up, Gunn, to compete again, even though he got a lot of exposure from making it all the way to the end alongside Just Sam. But he doesn’t have a record deal, so he’s able to return.

The returning contestants will perform during the April 19 episode. Voting will last one week, until April 26 at 6am ET, with the top vote-getter joining the rest of this season’s Top 10 on May 2. The reason for the wide gap between the performances and the results is because American Idol is taking a week off due to the Oscars airing on April 25; the following night, ABC will air a Sesame Street special. Once Idol is back on track, and the Top 10 have been revealed, the finalists will perform every Sunday and Monday until a winner is crowned on May 23.

This decision makes a lot of sense considering last year’s contestants didn’t get a chance to sing on the big stage. That’s a huge part of the American Idol experience. They were robbed of an opportunity that everyone else has gotten to have, and this move attempts to rectify that.

It’s unclear what impact this twist will have on the overall competition. The returning singer who joins the Top 10 could have an advantage with the fans who vote. However, viewers may think it’s unfair to the new American Idol contestants, resulting in them voting out the returning singer. A victory for a season 18 competitor could wind up being extremely controversial and unfair to everyone who competed properly throughout the season. Only time will tell if this twist truly shakes up the series for the better or if it will be considered a waste of time.

American Idol airs Sundays and Mondays at 8 pm on ABC.
