An F-Zero Reboot Just Needs HD, Not New Ideas

F Zero is a simple franchise, and Nintendo doesn’t need to reinvent the hovercar to deliver an HD follow-up to its previous GameCube offering.

An FZero Reboot Just Needs HD Not New Ideas

It has been well over a decade since F-Zero GX, the last proper entry in Nintendo’s futuristic racing series. Recently, former Nintendo designer Takaya Imamura said a new F-Zero game would requires a “grand” idea to carry things forward. For fans of Captain Falcon and arcade racing, a bold new vision would be nice, but a simple HD entry in the series would be just as good.

F-Zero was once at the forefront of Nintendo’s graphical achievements. The first entry launched alongside the Super Nintendo and showcased the console’s Mode 7 capabilities. F-Zero’s rotating 2D tracks and zoom effects set the stage for console 3D in the 16-bit generation, and that forward-thinking presentation was carried on into future entries. On the Nintendo 64, F-Zero pushed full polygonal cars while Mario Kart featured 2D sprites, and the GameCube’s GX still holds up in looks, despite its age. Each new console entry has featured the same high-speed races that push systems to the limit. As the Wii came out, innovative graphics took a backseat to motion controls, seemingly sealing F-Zero’s fate.

The idea that F-Zero could only come back if Nintendo innovated on its formula made more sense in an era when utilizing the Wii Remote was an important goal for the developer. Nowadays, the Switch has innovative games, but it also has the same button layout as every other console on the market. Indie and AAA studios alike are scrambling to port games to the system, and controls are almost never an issue. Nintendo has released its own straightforward games for the system as well, but it’s shown no change in its stance on F-Zero. A simple HD upgrade remains off the table, so the series is in limbo.

A New F-Zero Game Wouldn’t Need New Ideas To Be Great

Mario Kart 8 proves Nintendo’s Wii U could pump out impressive-looking games as well as the Switch, but it’s certainly no surprise Nintendo didn’t release a game in the relatively obscure F-Zero franchise on the already poorly selling console. Now, on a wildly popular HD system, it’s the ideal time to try promoting F-Zero again. Whether it’s a brand-new game or an HD rerelease of F-Zero GX, Switch players new and old would certainly appreciate the difference modern hardware can make.

It’s possible – and even likely – developers at Nintendo could come up with a new way to tackle F-Zero that would blow players away. However, after almost two decades of nothing but a few tracks in Mario Kart 8, fans just want something from the series. There is a hole in the market for AAA versions of this style of racing game, and Nintendo’s ultra-popular kart racing series can’t fill it alone. F-Zero has a unique world of characters and precision gameplay that warrant more exploring.
