Andrew Garfield Says LinManuel Miranda Helped Him Realize His Dream

Andrew Garfield shares that Lin-Manuel Miranda helped him realize his dream of being in a musical. Garfield’s latest role sees him star as the protagonist, Jon, in the musical film Tick, Tick… BOOM!, directed by Miranda. Adapted from Jonathan Larson’s off-broadway musical of the same name, the film dropped on Netflix last Friday. A semi-autobiographical story, set in the 1990s, the movie is based on the real life of playwright Larson, who is best known for writing the broadway musical Rent. Following “Jon” as he is living in NYC and coming up to his 30th birthday, the story explores the doubts of the struggling playwright, whom, lacking considerable success, considers whether he was right in pursuing a career in the performing arts. Laced with musical numbers and a cast including Vanessa Hudgens, Jordan Fisher and Alexandra Shipp, Tick, Tick… BOOM! has already been met with raving reviews.

Garfield, who gained international recognition after his 2012 role as Peter Parker in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man, began his career in British TV and film, as well as on the UK stage. He won a BAFTA for his performance in the 2007 Channel 4 drama, Boy A, and went on to star in higher profile films such as The Social Network, alongside Jesse Eisenberg. In 2017, the British actor was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance in Hacksaw Ridge. Despite being no stranger to the stage, appearing in the broadway revival of Death of a Salesman in 2012, Garfield had never taken on a musical role until Tick, Tick… BOOM!

Speaking recently with Collider, Garfield credits Lin-Manuel Miranda for “awakening” his dream of being in a musical. He gushed about his admiration for Miranda, describing him as a “magical creature” who helped him to discover the musical capability within him and his performance. On Miranda’s own talent, Garfield also talked about his “self-belief” being a contagious part of his personality. Read his full comment below:

The way I’d put it is… Lin made a dream of mine come true that I didn’t even know I had. You know what I’m saying? Like I think it’s been a dream of mine to be in a musical… but I didn’t own it. I was too scared of it potentially happening… and failing. So, you know, sometimes it takes someone else to see where you can get to, clearer than yourself. Lin is that – Lin is this magical creature that awakens parts of you… just by being in his orbit, that make you realise or find out aspects of yourself that you didn’t even know existed. Because he is so full of his own self-belief, his own artistic freedom and creativity – you see him free styling and you’re like how are you able to reach that level of total free-play and brilliance? – there’s a self-belief there that I think is contagious. So, for me it was like, I will trust in this genius of musical theatre, even if I don’t feel confident in myself, I will borrow his confidence in me.

It is evident that Miranda really helped to coach Garfield in his role as Jonathan Larson, instilling in him the necessary confidence to execute the more daunting aspects of the musical role. As the mastermind behind shows such as Hamilton and In The Heights, Miranda clearly passed on a lot of his wisdom to Garfield for this film. Furthermore, Garfield seems to suggest that Miranda’s faith in him meant that he was eventually able to believe in himself as well.

Garfield has been the subject of many conversations recently, with the continuous rumors about whether he will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the talk as of this weekend has been focused on his brilliant performance in Tick, Tick… BOOM! As Miranda’s feature film directorial debut, the musical had been highly anticipated, and has thus far been met with a warm response. After the first trailer dropped, audiences were shocked at Garfield’s musical capability, questioning why he hadn’t appeared in a musical sooner, and it seems that his confident performance can be credited in part to Miranda’s support and guidance.
