Over the last decade, Andrew Garfield has made a name for himself in Hollywood by playing everything from the fictional web-slinger Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man films to real-life televangelist Jim Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. After having his fair share of supporting roles, Garfield earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his lead role in 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge.

His turn as the real-life composer, Jonathan Larson, in Netflix’s tick, tick…BOOM! has earned Garfield award buzz, receiving Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominations for the leading role. While he’s just getting started in his second decade in Hollywood, he already has some great movies in his filmography.

10 The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) – 6.9

In 2012, Garfield climbed up the Hollywood ladder when he was cast as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony’s reboot on the franchise. He took the mantle over from Tobey Maguire, Garfield’s take on the character making Peter more of a misunderstood loner than an unpopular geek.

Garfield starred in two Spider-Man films directed by Marc Webb, but only the first installment made it into the actor’s top 10. The Amazing Spider-Man allowed Garfield to show off some great action sequences and it became the highest-grossing film of the year. And while the planned franchise was canceled after the sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man helped make Garfield a household name.

9 99 Homes (2014) – 7.1

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Garfield began focusing on more dramatic roles. His first film after taking off the Spidey suit for the last time was Ramin Bahrani’s 99 Homes. He plays Dennis Nash, an unemployed single father who reluctantly begins working for the crooked real estate broker who evicted his family.

Along with great work from Laura Dern and Michael Shannon, Garfield gives a fantastic and realistic performance as the desperate Dennis. His work in dramatic films like 99 Homes proves he’s not just Spider-Man.

8 Never Let Me Go (2010) – 7.1

Two years before he was cast in The Amazing Spider-Man, Garfield played Tommy, the male lead in the 2010 film Never Let Me Go. Alongside Academy Award nominees Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, Garfield rounds out the film’s tragic love triangle. The period piece follows a group of young adults who were raised to be organ donors who will die in their early adulthood after their final donation.

Ex Machina’s Alex Garland penned the screenplay based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 novel. For his role as Tommy, Garfield won the Best Supporting Actor Saturn Award and received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the British Independent Film Awards.

7 Breathe (2017) – 7.2

In Andy Serkis’ directorial debut Breathe, Garfield plays Robin Cavendish, a man who becomes paralyzed from the neck down after contracting polio in his late 20s. He is unable to breathe without a respirator and doctors tell Robin he only has a few months to live. This dire diagnosis causes Robin to fall into a deep depression, ]initially refusing to see his loved ones.

Claire Foy plays his loving wife Diana, who encourages Robin to reembrace life with the time he has left. Diana becomes his primary caretaker, allowing Robin to move back home. Breathe ends with Robin’s death, and he’s able to express his love for his wife and son before passing away.

6 Silence (2016) – 7.2

Garfield and his equally-talented scene partner, Adam Driver, play two 17th-century Jesuit missionaries in Martin Scorsese’s historical epic, Silence. Garfield’s Sebastião and Driver’s Francisco travel from Portugal to Japan in order to find their missing mentor, Liam Neeson’s Cristóvão.

Silence is based on the 1966 Shūsaku Endō novel of the same name. The serious film was stuck in development hell for years and the final product failed to generate the usual buzz a Scorsese picture would receive. Silence features incredible performances from Garfield and Driver, becoming a great movie from a famous director that many haven’t seen and one of Scorsese’s most underrated gems.

5 tick, tick…BOOM! (2021) – 7.6

While it’s one of Garfield’s most recent movies, tick, tick…BOOM! has received praise from critics and fans alike. His performance as the late composer and playwright Jonathan Larson, best known for the musical RENT, has been heralded as one of the best of his career.

A complex and creative man, Jonathan is incredibly dedicated to his art and hopes to leave his mark on the world. His passion and drive keep him from giving up on his Broadway dreams and make Jonathan the best character in tick, tick…BOOM! For the role, Garfield worked with vocal coaches and to play enough piano to believably play the composer.

4 Boy A (2007) – 7.6

Boy A marks Garfield’s first leading role. In the film, he plays Eric Wilson, a young man who reenters society under a new identity after spending a decade in juvenile prison. Eric’s past is told through flashbacks, the boy and his friend Philip ending up in custody following the murder of one of their classmates.

Eric hopes to become a good citizen once again, starting his new life under the name Jack Burridge. As his new life becomes more complicated, Eric wants to be honest about his past. His caseworker is worried about Eric’s safety because there’s a large reward for finding the young man. When the truth is finally discovered, his new life is uprooted and Eric must make a drastic choice.

3 The Social Network (2010) – 7.7

David Fincher’s The Social Network was one of the top films of 2010 and the decade. The biographical drama written by Aaron Sorkin follows the founding of Facebook and the lawsuits that followed. For his lead role as Mark Zuckerberg, Jesse Eisenberg received an Academy Award nomination. Garfield plays Eduardo Saverin, Mark Zuckerberg’s friend and business partner.

The two have a falling out over the course of the film, Eduardo filing one of the lawsuits after his Facebook shares are suddenly and unfairly diluted. Garfield’s performance as Eduardo is brilliant and his iconic, “Sorry my Prada’s at the cleaners” outburst is one of the best moments in the film. He received Best Supporting Actor nominations at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes for his work.

2 Hacksaw Ridge (2016) – 8.1

Based on the documentary The Conscientious Objector, Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge stars Garfield as Desmond Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist who refused to carry or use a weapon of any kind while serving as a combat medic during World War II. At the Battle of Okinawa, Doss saves 75 men without a firearm at his side. Desmond became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

Hacksaw Ridge is a gripping war film that received critical acclaim, winning two Academy Awards for Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing. For his role as Desmond, Garfield received his first Best Actor Academy Award nomination.

1 Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) – 9.1

The most recent release on this list, Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently Garfield’s highest-ranking film on IMDb with an impressive 9.1. And while Garfield spent months denying his involvement in the film, it’s great seeing him back in the Spidey suit and making his MCU debut.

All three Peter Parkers have their own personality, and Garfield’s Peter feels very distinct. Following the death of Gwen Stacy, he admits to growing bitter and being filled with rage. In No Way Home, there are many heartfelt and tearful scenes as the three Spider-Men team and grow to view each other as brothers by the film’s end.
