By now, everybody has heard about Raymond, Judy, and other popular Animal Crossing: New Horizons characters. However, the Animal Crossing franchise also boasts over 60 cranky villagers who can create interesting new dynamics on players’ islands.

Whether players want to develop an island full of cranky villagers or simply want to find the perfect cranky villager to add to the diverse cast of personalities already on their island, there are several sassy sweethearts to choose from. Of course, as with any group of villagers, there are a few grumpy characters who stand out from the rest.

10 Fang

Fang is a cranky wolf villager known to be one of the iciest islanders in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This grumpy wolf features a blue sweater covered in snowflakes, just to remind the player that he has a cold attitude. However, Fang is a fiercely loyal friend if players can work past his grumpy demeanor. While Fang’s favorite saying may be “You mess with the wolf, you get the fangs,” he returns kindness the very same way. Despite the original effort required to befriend this lovable grouch, Fang’s loyalty is a great explanation for his popularity.

9 Octavian

At first glance, Octavian is a very intimidating Animal Crossing villager. This cranky octopus is bright red and covered in bandages. However, Octavian is secretly just a villager looking to have fun. Octavian is one of the very few cranky villagers who features the ‘play’ hobby, which means he can be seen zooming around the island with his arms outstretched. Aside from this, he will often offer up scavenger hunts for players to participate in. If players can push past Octavian’s intimidating appearance, this grumpy octopus can be a very sweet addition to any island.

8 Chow

Chow is a rather confusing villager to meet, as his outward appearance doesn’t quite match his cranky personality. Chow is a pale pink panda bear featuring either a big smile or cute, stuffed cheeks. However, Chow’s initial catchphrase is ‘aiya’ which commonly signifies frustration or displeasure, and he can get very grouchy if he doesn’t get his way. Despite Chow’s cranky personality, his friendship can be very rewarding. Like many cranky villagers, Chow values his friendships highly and will always make players feel special if they have put the effort into befriending him.

7 Bruce

Deer villagers are not known to be grumpy in general, but Bruce is an exception to this rule as the only cranky deer villager in the Animal Crossing franchise. Bruce can be very gruff when talking to players, which should be no surprise seeing as ‘gruff’ is his initial catchphrase.

However, Bruce is a very peaceful villager to keep around. This grumpy villager has the ‘nature’ hobby and spends most of his free time quietly reading books about various bugs, flowers, fossils, or fish. Bruce also boasts a very interesting house interior, featuring a basketball hoop, a bike, and plenty of graffiti.

6 Avery

Avery is a cranky eagle villager who can provide Animal Crossing players with an endearing, grandfatherly figure for their islands. While Avery is easily overwhelmed by the exuberance of peppy villagers, he seems to admire the youthful energy that they maintain. Avery’s dialogue suggests that he is older than many other villagers, and therefore a bit tired in comparison. However, this grumpy eagle offers up plenty of sage wisdom once players manage to befriend him, and can be singing peacefully all over the island.

5 Chief

Chief is a cranky wolf villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons who may easily be mistaken for a smug villager at first glance. More often than not, smug villagers feature preppy outfits like the clean white shirt and pink sweater combination sported by Chief. However, this grumpy wolf is known for his bark and will happily provide players with grouchy dialogue. Of course, Chief’s neat outfit and bright orange fur help his comments to feel more endearingly sassy than outright abrasive. This easy interpretation of Chief’s words as feisty rather than rude makes him a wonderful addition to players’ islands.

4 Rolf

According to Rolf’s e-Reader card, this cranky tiger grew up on a snowy mountainside. As evidenced by Fang, it comes as no surprise that Animal Crossing villagers from icy places tend to have icy personalities.

Rolf makes a handful of comments about how easily he could ‘eat you for lunch,’ but ultimately he spends most of his time on the island dreaming of camping in the mountains. Rolf’s house interior is decorated to look like a scenic mountain campsite and is a wonderful place to relax with this amusingly grouchy friend.

3 Static

Static may be one of the coolest Animal Crossing villagers to set foot on a player’s island. This purple squirrel features a lightning bolt pattern on his forehead and interjects the phrases ‘krzzt’ and ‘Zap!’ frequently in conversation. Electric-themed characters are commonly known as the coolest characters in any game, and Static is no exception. While Static stays true to his cranky personality by being “overwhelmingly on the side of the straight and narrow” according to his description in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, he is a fun, grouchy addition for islands with a cooler theme.

2 Hopper

Animal Crossing New Horizons 10 Grumpiest Islanders (That We Still Love)

Similar to both Fang and Rolf, Hopper is an Animal Crossing who grew up in the cold. Hopper is a cranky villager modeled after a rockhopper penguin, with crested yellow ‘eyebrows’ that lend him a permanently grouchy look. Even Hopper’s house interior in Animal Crossing: New Horizons has an icy atmosphere, which even further explains this grumpy penguin’s cold attitude. However, Hopper is a very peaceful addition to any island and can be found singing to himself as he wanders around.

1 Roscoe

According to Roscoe’s favorite phrase, “Trouble rides a fast horse.” Modeled loosely after the knight chess piece, Roscoe is the only cranky horse villager in the Animal Crossing franchise. Much like Static, Roscoe’s appearance is very stereotypically cool. All-black fur, red eyes, a leather biker jacket, and a tendency to burst into song all over the island make Roscoe feel very much like a rockstar. Of course, Roscoe is still a cranky villager and is therefore quick to complain about virtually everything. However, the fact that he is able to complain with style makes Roscoe an irresistible addition to many Animal Crossing: New Horizons islands.
