Animal Kingdom is not always a forgiving show, and some beloved characters are now gone for good. These are the ones we miss the most.

Animal Kingdom just closed off its fourth season, and every single episode has us on the edge of our seats. We’ve seen new characters come and go, and have even seen some of our very favorite ones meet their demise. This show definitely isn’t afraid to pull at your heartstrings and cut the main cast in an intense and brutal way.
In case you’ve forgotten all of these beloved characters, we’re here to remind you. Some of these characters have met their fatal demise, while others have simply packed up and left. Here are the 10 saddest of the bunch, ranked. (Spoilers ahead)
10 Mia
Let’s be honest – you were literally chanting at the television screen for J to finally end this gal’s nonsense. This character started working for Smurf, and we quickly find out that she was the finger behind the trigger of Baz’s death.
If that wasn’t enough to make us hate her, she also killed Lucy. On top of that, she’s just not a nice person and is super annoyingly frustrating. She lasted 20 whole episodes, though, until she met her demise thanks to J’s bullet in “Ambo”, in season 5. We were honestly glad, so this death definitely takes the bottom slot on this list.
9 Morgan Wilson
We almost put this character at the bottom, but it turns out we hated Mia just that much. Morgan Wilson was the lawyer, Smurf’s lawyer, to be exact. While Smurf was in jail, this woman met repeatedly with J in order to settle some financial matters.
As it turns out, J was manipulating this manipulative woman, and she ends up getting sliced on his boat and tossed into the ocean to drown. Not cool, J, but we don’t really miss this character, anyways. If you want to watch this brutal massacre again, head on over to “Homecoming”.
8 Amy
We’re pretty sad that Amy’s character left the show. You’ll remember her as the nice church lady that Pope starts to date (while the boys are planning to rob the church fundraiser). She was sweet, pretty, smart, and definitely good for Pope.
We weren’t totally surprised that she never wanted to see him again after he, you know, told her he was a murderer. She lasted 11 episodes, disappearing forever in “Hyenas.” And still, we’re pretty bummed out about it, because we liked her.
7 Catherine
Catherine makes it so far up on this list mainly because her death was one of the saddest. Sure, she wasn’t the most interesting character, and it’s kind of her fault (she snitched, remember) for getting killed.
However, it was super depressing knowing that Lena’s mom just got suffocated with a pillow, and it was even sadder that Pope, who loved her, was the one to do it. We’re still shocked, to be honest, and it’s definitely when we knew this show wasn’t messing around. This character only made it to the season 1 finale.
6 Lucy
Lucy was Baz’s other flame. Whether you’re team Lucy or team Catherine isn’t really what is important here. What is important, is that Lucy was badass and wasn’t taking no guff from the Cody family. Her death cut us deep because we really thought she was intelligent and brave as hell, and she dies right in front of her son (at the hands of that pesky Mia).
We actually had high hopes for this character, especially after she got Smurf to admit that she killed Baz. Of course, we should’ve known it would only be a matter of time. Lucy lasted a whopping 29 episodes, though, and we’re still broken up about it coming to an end.
5 Nicky
So we know there’s quite the controversy over this character, but honestly, we miss her. Maybe it was because J’s next flame, Mia, was infinitely worse. Still, we’re kind of sad that J just manipulated this poor girl and then just threw her to the curb. We kind of liked her spirit, and we think she could’ve grown a heck of a lot as a character.
We hope you’re doing well, Nicky, because we think you could’ve been great. She left us in season 3 after appearing in 30 whole episodes. Honestly, J could have done a lot worse, and you deserved better.
4 Barry “Baz” Blackwell
Again, Baz isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite character. However, we have to admit that it was pretty devastating that him and Lucy were having a grand ol’ time and he just gets totally demolished in the front seat of his car with a bullet. It’s even more tragic when he’s running down the street, and then the season ENDS, and then he’s alive, and then he’s dead.
That was an emotional roller coaster, and we’ve not totally recovered. Also, we’ll never know if he’s really J’s dad, and that’s kind of sad. Baz met his demise at the beginning of season 3, and he’s been wiped from the Codys’ family memory ever since.
3 Colin
Colin was only in 11 episodes, all of them in season 5. And still, his death definitely left us in tears, more so than any other character on this list so far. Yeah, Colin wasn’t perfect, but he was trying, and he was definitely the best Janine ever had.
If that wasn’t enough, he literally dies taking a bullet for Janine, while she’s pregnant with their twins. That’s devastating, and we won’t hear anything more about it. Imagine how different it would have been if he survived, hey?
2 Adrian
While this may be up for debate, we still think that Adrian leaving was one of the hardest things we’ve watched. Sure, we’ve seen lots of characters quite literally get their heads blown off, but nothing broke our hearts quite as much as it did when Adrian told Deran he was the worst thing to ever happen to him.
And then he left, and then Deran collapsed into a puddle of tears. That’s some tough stuff. Yeah, we’re glad Deran stayed (because we love him), but we know how much he loved Adrian. We’re not crying, you’re crying.
1 Janine “Smurf” Cody
This character is by far the most controversial on the list. Sure, in the grand scheme of things, we’re kind of glad she’s no longer kicking. However, this death broke our heart into a thousand pieces, and we’re not sure we’ll ever be quite whole again.
From making her son (and grandson) end her life on the job to the heartwarming montage of her holding baby Andrew to the devastating scene of Andrew saying goodbye, this had us blubbering like babies. This woman was a villain, but boy did Pope love her, and boy will this show not be the same. RIP Smurf.
