Anonymous WWE Star Slams Company’s Handling of COVID19

An anonymous WWE star has slammed the way the company has handled COVID-19. Ever since the world turned upside in March due to the coronavirus, WWE has continued producing their weekly shows and Pay-Per-View events like WrestleMania out of their Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. The decision proved to be a controversial one, with many questioning it, and things have since only gotten worse for the company. Last month, it came to light that WWE had not been testing for COVID-19 and were only doing temperature checks and getting talent to fill out questionnaires.

A few days ago, a report came out noting that WWE superstars and staff had tested positive for the virus, including wrestlers and WWE commentator Renee Young. Now it has come out that over thirty WWE employees have tested positive for the virus. WWE also issued a statement, claiming they will now be testing for COVID-19 for the “foreseeable future.” The positive tests come at time where Florida has reported a spike in COVID-19 cases, with almost 9,000 new cases, and a time where WWE has slowly been introducing friends and family of WWE employees to act as fans. The growing problems for the company have now been made worse with a WWE talent publicly criticizing WWE’s handling of the situation.

Yesterday, Wrestling Inc. published an email they received from a WWE developmental talent, who wanted to remain anonymous, about the recent positive tests. In the email, the talent notes they have been “FORBIDDEN” from telling anyone about their illness besides people they may live with, and that “WWE will take care of any medical treatments.” However, the talent noted that WWE put them in this position by taping “multiple shows a day that averaging 10 to 12 hours plus for at least 2 sometimes 3 days in a row.” The email also states that “most people were not tested until last week,” and also stated that WWE TV Producer Kevin Dunn “did not allow fans to wear masks and made a scene twice over the PA to not wear masks.” The talent also mentioned that some employees have attended large gatherings outside, but will not inform the company during its “screening process,” and concluded by stating that: “The train is not only off the tracks but has gone over the cliff in a blaze of glory.”

The email seems to confirm many of the reports and rumors floating around about WWE’s management of COVID-19. WWE has recently been using their developmental talent as fans, and the fact that they then not only brought in outsiders but were also against those “fans” wearing masks shows a serious mishandling of the situation, which has now seemingly put countless employees in harm’s way, unnecessarily. The company’s approach has also already had an effect on their shows, as last night’s SmackDown primarily focused on The Undertaker’s Boneyard match with AJ Styles, instead of airing new content, such as Styles’ advertised match with Drew Gulak.

WWE was fortunate they could capitalize on Undertaker’s recent retirement to cover up for their lack of available talent last night, but that can only go on for so long. The latest RAW taping was reportedly canceled yesterday and was said to be taking place today, but time will tell how that will work out for WWE. The premiere wrestling promotion has put themselves and their employees in this position, and WWE superstars like Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn have certainly been vindicated in their decision to avoid wrestling during the pandemic. Although WWE is trying to make changes, such as testing for COVID-19, it should now be clear that they need to press pause and look out for the safety of their employees.
