Though the Ant-Man movies have been some of the smallest-scale MCU stories thus far, that could all change with the third movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. While little is known about the story for this movie, one aspect that could have a huge impact on the future of the MCU is the inclusion of Kang the Conqueror.

Jonathan Majors will play Kang, who is one of the biggest Marvel villains and someone who could replace Thanos as the MCU’s Big Bad. Kang the Conqueror also has one of the most complicated backstories in the comics that fans will want to read up on before he makes his MCU debut.

10 Ruled In Ancient Egypt

Part of what makes Kang’s story such a confusing one is that it is non-linear. He was introduced in a Fantastic Four story but under a different name as the Egyptian Pharaoh Rama-Tut.

It is later revealed that in the distant future, Kang discovered a time-traveling device used by Doctor Doom and used it to go back in time to Ancient Egypt. When he arrives, he is mistaken by the people of that time as a god thanks to his advanced technology and he is named pharaoh.

9 Becoming Kang

During his time in Ancient Egypt, Rama-Tut has a run-in with the Fantastic Four. After briefly enslaving them, the superhero team manages to fight back against the villain causing him to flee in his time travel ship.

Kang had originally planned to return to his original time but ended up going too far into the future and ended up in the year 4000. The world was scattered and desolate in this era and Kang was able to easily take over. Seating himself as the new ruler, he finally adopted the named Kang the Conqueror.

8 Descendant Of Reed Richards

With confirmation that a Fantastic Four movie is in the works from Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts, fans are wondering how Marvel’s First Family will be introduced into the MCU. Kang could provide some answers to this question.

In the comics, Kang’s real name is Nathaniel Richards and he is said to be a descendant of Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic. He shares something of a connection with Reed as he is also fascinated with science and is a genius in his own right.

7 Bored With Peaceful Times

Because of this convoluted backstory with multiple timelines involved, there are a number of different origin stories to explain Kang’s quest to go back in time and rule. One of the earliest tales of his backstory explains that his quest was born out of boredom.

Kang lived in a time in which wars had been virtually ended and everyone was at peace. He found this to be a dull existence and sought to find some sort of excitement in other time periods.

6 Princess Ravonna

After taking over the world in the year 4000, Kang meets and falls in love with Princess Ravonna, daughter of King Carelius. Kang allowed her father to continue ruling out of his love for Ravonna, but she insisted she marry him. She is later killed during one of Kang’s wars.

When Kang battles the Grandmaster is a contest, it is decided the winner will have the power of life or death. When Kang wins, he uses his victory to wish death on the Avengers rather than bring Ravonna back to life. The Grandmaster brings her back anyway and tells her of Kang’s decision.

5 He Is Also Iron Lad

To add even more confusion to the whole story of Kang, it turns out that an alternate version of himself is the Young Avengers member, Iron Lad. After being defeated by the Avengers again, Kang goes back in time to convince his younger self to destroy them.

However, instead of being inspired by this version from the future, the younger Kang is horrified by what he becomes. He stole some of Kang’s armor and traveled back in time to convince Vision to form the Young Avengers.

4 Spider-Man Robot

Despite being an extremely powerful time-traveler, Kang the Conqueror is still a comic book villain and has had his share of ridiculous supervillain plots throughout his time in the comics.

In one of his first instances battling the Avengers, Kang built an android version of Spider-Man to fight against the other heroes. Unfortunately for Kang, the robot was no match for the original Spider-Man, who showed up to save the day and destroy the doppelganger.

3 Connection To Apocalypse

Along with potentially setting up the Fantastic Four for the MCU, Kang could also introduce the concept of mutants to this universe thanks to his connection to a character who is known as the first mutant.

While ruling in Ancient Egypt, Kang meets the powerful being of that time who was known as En Sabah Nur. In the future, this being would become known as the powerful mutant Apocalypse, one of the most famous X-Men villains from the comics who ruled once Kang went back to his own time.

2 Assembling His Own Avengers

While fans are not likely to see Kang building his own Spider-Man robot in the movies, not all of his ideas were so outlandish. In fact, one of his battles against the Avengers included a plan that might actually be a lot of fun to see in the MCU.

After Kang renamed himself as the Scarlet Centurion, he went throughout history plucking different versions of the original five Avengers and then used them to fight against the heroes in their current timeline.

1 Countless Alternate Kanes

Time travel can often be difficult to wrap one’s head around, but the way it works in the comics is similar to how the Ancient One explained it in Avengers: Endgame. Whenever there is a divergence from the timeline, it creates its own timeline.

This is also the case with Kane and each time he jumps through time, a new timeline is created that has its own Kane. This leads to the eventual assembly of all the Kangs where one destroys the others to become Kang Prime. Unfortunately, this also causes him to absorb the memories of the other Kangs, causing him to go insane.
