AntMan & the Wasp Trailer Sets Up New Avengers 4 Hero

Marvel Studios’ second trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp sets up Cassie Lang to become a fully fledged superhero in Avengers 4. When Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man debuted in 2015, following on from Marvel Studios and closing out Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, only Scott Lang received a super-suit. However, there were teases for plenty of other characters to suit up; Hank Pym had once donned the Ant-Man suit alongside his wife, Janet van Dyne, who took the mantle of the Wasp. Now in Reed’s sequel, Scott will return as Ant-Man and join forces with Hank’s daughter Hope van Dyne, who dons the Wasp suit.

Ant-Man and the Wasp were absent from Avengers: Infinity War, the latest Marvel Studios release and a massive crossover event for the franchise. After their standalone film, Earth’s tiniest heroes are expected to join the fight in Avengers 4. However, it’s possible they’ll receive some help from an unlikely source – one that’s set up through dialogue in the second Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer, which Marvel released today.

Early on in the trailer, Scott is shown having a conversation with his daughter, Cassie Lang, about him suiting up as Ant-Man again. At one point in a voiceover, Cassie says, “I wish I could fight bad guys like you!” while viewers watch Ant-Man – as Giant-Man – attempt to catch some bad guys. The acoustics of this voiceover hint that it’s not actually from the same conversation we see Scott and Cassie having (because it sounds slightly different), but it does set the stage for Cassie’s future as a superhero. In the comics, Cassie grew up around superheroes and wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps, which she eventually did as a teenager by joining the Young Avengers under the codename Stature, though she later took on the name Stinger.

One line of dialogue isn’t necessarily an indication Cassie Lang will suit up as a superhero in Avengers 4, however, a recent casting report offers more insight. It was recently reported that Emma Fuhrmann joined Avengers 4 as an older version of Cassie Lang. Though it’s unclear how this will be explained, it’s possible there will be a big time jump between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. Abby Ryder Forston, who portrays Cassie in Ant-Man and its sequel, is only 10-years-old, which is too young to depict the superhero version of the character. Fuhrmann, on the other hand, is 16-years-old, which lines up with what we know of Cassie from the comics.

If Fuhrmann is playing an older Cassie Lang as reports indicate and Ant-Man and the Wasp is already laying the groundwork for Scott’s daughter to become a superhero, it points to the character suiting up in Avengers 4. If not, perhaps Marvel is saving Cassie Lang’s superhero adventures for Ant-Man 3 or a Young Avengers movie or TV show. With Avengers 4 marking the end of the MCU’s first three phases, it makes sense for a new generation of heroes to step in and take over. Whether that includes Cassie Lang remains to be seen.

No matter what Marvel Studios has planned for Cassie’s character in the long run, her line in the latest Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer will no doubt please fans of her comic book superhero alter ego as it sets the stage for her to suit up at some point in the MCU. And, given what we know, it’s possible she’ll suit up as soon as Avengers 4, joining the fight to save the universe as a new superhero.
